We went later in the day (4 pm) which by then, most of the birds were already roosting for the night. So, the prevalent species we saw was junk in the water. And lots of it - plastic bottles, flip flops, plastic bags, etc.

On the bright side, it was a nice walk and shaded in many areas by the tree canopy.

I walked to the Bird Sanctuary / Wetlands Centre early one morning via Signal Hill and returned after spending 2 hours there along the coast road. You need to be there early to see the birds and I entered before the place was officially open for the day. I saw Collared and Common Kingfishers, Purple and Little Herons, Spectacled and Yellow-vented Bulbuls, Olive-backed Sunbird, Common Iora and Ashy Tailorbird as well as the more obvious Egrets etc. Walking along the boardwalks through a Mangrove swamp is a wonderful experience and something that isn't often possible. The comments by previous reviewers about all the cans and bottles scattered around the place are accurate and it is a disgrace that the staff don't bother to clear it up. However, I wouldn't let that stop you from making a visit ... but to see the birds it needs to be early in the morning.

Kota Kinabalu bird sanctuary and the wetlands centre are the same place, just to save some confusion.
The place was just awful. We didn't see any birds and we were there for hours. The only animals we saw were crabs and two little lizards. Look around the place though and you can see why. The water is vile, layered with a film of oil or something. We must have seen about 100 water bottles floating around and maybe 50 flip flops. Obviously all been there a while as they were covered in algae. We saw lots of staff when we went in so I'm not sure why they don't do something about the state of the place. It has amazing potential but at the moment, definitely stay away.

One and the same place so you aren't lost as we thought we were.
As already said of the wetlands, this attractions needs TLC and a cleanup.
