“great stay :)”
Reviewed 5 April 2014

NB Cabin is a great budget hostel. Night market, bus terminus, jetty to the islands, restaurants and banks all within walking distance. Rooms are basic but spacious and clean. Facilities are shared, but again always clean. They also serve coffee, tea and bread and jam/nutella for breakfast. Staff are very friendly and extremely helpful, they will give lots of advice and help you with your bookings for tours/ buses etc. I would definitely recommend this place :)

Just stayed some days before. Feel like the review been over rated. Worst hostel i ever been. Old building including the room and design. One of worst is I saw a bed bug crawling over my pillow. And too i meet with cockroach every night at toilet. Wondering what is mean by the "perfect stay" by other traveler. Thumb down for this accommodation..

when u enter u will get instantly a good vibe. stayed in a private room and in a dorm, each 2 nights. Rooms are clean, beds are OK, fans are running all the time. U also can book with air con. The location is perfect. To tourism office only around the block, mall 5 min., jetty 10 min. (Tip> take a boat to one of the nearby islands for a day relax), local restaurants in the same street, fast food around the corner. the hostel is family owned, questions are answered truthfully in time, price and distance. You also get good advice throughout Sabah.
I can recommend the place to everybody. So far i have seen, travellers keep coming back after there mount kinabalu tour or jungle track. Even i came back after sipadan diving.

Room Tip: Private rooms can be booked up to 4 people. Ask for room A(private) or B(dorm), its on the same floo...

This is one of the best hostels I've stayed in in Southeast Asia! Would definitely stay there again!
Fan dorm 25 R/night, AC dorm 30 R/night.
Good facilities with nice commonroom, free computer use, wifi, TV, 24 h free drinking water, tea and coffee, clean dorms and bathrooms, safety lockers, good location, great value, all you need!
The only little complains:
There were periods when the wifi ddidn't work.
Only toast for breakfast, but thats how It usually is in Southeast Asia.

I found this hostel a perfect starting point for my voyage in Sabah, with hot showers, good trust worthy staff who provided me with frank honest good advice (a rare occurance).
It is also in a very central location in KK.

North Borneo Cabin was in an excellent spot; a 2 minute walks to supermarkets, cafés and the waterfront and 5 minutes from the jetty.

The room was adequate and had a good sized window (private double room with a/c). The shared bathrooms were also fairly clean which was nice.

However, I guess it definitely felt like a $10 a night kind of stay. The breakfast was cheap white bread with a huge tub of butter and foul instant coffee. Also, We were sitting in the upstairs common room when a rat ran from the door to the balcony.

Unfortunately though, the laundry facilities didn't exist and the staff were quite stand-off-ish and looked as if they a) didn't want to be there or b) we were interrupting their Facebook time. It was especially disappointing/concerning when the late night staff were unable to tell us where the local doctor/hospital was as one of us was having an allergic reaction to medication.

Overall fairly average, but I guess keep in mind the location and price.

Room Tip: Definitely appreciated our large window and a/c!!
