“Bedbugs”
Reviewed 28 May 2014

We stayed here two nights and got bitten by seceral bedbugs the first night. When we told reception, they simply said: move to another room, in this one we never had complaints. So, they knew they had bedbugs and never told us. In the second room we had them as well!

My boyfriend and I stayed here for 1 night only, because it was not the place to be... Rats in the kitchen, the shared bathroom was terrible, the room was ok but not that clean, the breakfast was a plain toast made in the kitchen (where the rats were)... So just a place to sleep and go!

Positive
-Room was ok (10 bed dorm) with aircondition (hot during the day because aircon has to be off)
-It's right in the centre

Negative
-Staff is busy playing WOW on the computer, if you want to ask something they are not happy to stop their game for you
- the breakfast is dry bread with disgusting jam
- you have to pay extra for a locker
- laundry service is ridiculously expensive
- only two showers for all the dorms, one was broken
- the toilets are not hygienic at all, sinks never get cleaned? Don't look at the floor!
- the TV room/ common area has very bad air, very sticky
- staff smokes in front of door and all the fresh and nice smoke comes into the house, yummy for non-smokers

In a nutshell: go anywhere else but here.

Pros: Polite staff, air-conditioned room, hot shower, free breakfast

Cons: Moldy ceilings, bathroom/s need serious scrubbing, beds in the female dorm room need to be replaced as they squeak at the tiniest movement. And one male staff wasn't helpful and left us Hanging when we asked for as cab service. (Cab service is Advertised in the services they offer, the male staff was too busy facebook-ing)

Was on a business trip but decided to rough it out for fun with a six-to-a-room dorm room - this hostel ended up with better amenities and services than the five-star hotel I was supposed to stay in (it ran out of vacacies.) The hostel has a functional kitchen with bread, jams and toasters available 24/7; there are four showers and enough hot water for everyone -- just have to take turns if everyone wants to shower at the same timing -- lots of other trips can be arranged by the hotel staff. I even managed to arrange a one-day diving trip on my day off -- thanks to Diverse Borneo! http://www.diverse-borneo.com

I booked this room before arriving and didn't read the previous reviews including one describing bed bugs. I should have been suspicious when I saw the 'no refund once payment sign' at reception which is always a big red flag. The roof was leaking onto the bed and it was wet and there was signs of bedbugs from previous stays but it was late and I was told I could not get a refund (of course). I sprayed myself in deet and hoped for the best. I woke up covered in bites with mites and bedbugs running around the bed. The toilets and showers are filthy and staff are not very friendly. They don't care though because they are in Lonely Planet and they know travelers will keep coming. There are much cleaner, nicer hotels just up the road, for the same price. Stay somewhere else!!!

Room Tip: Stay somewhere else!

at the moment i'm still staying in the Borneo Gaya Lodge.
I really like staying at this place, the staff is really friendly, the rooms are well maintained en very clain.
Borneo Gaya Lodge is on Gaya street one of the mainroads in Kota Kinabalu so from here it is pretty easy to get around in the city.
Untill so far this is the best place where i stayed so far in Kota Kinabalu, i didn't like 5 other hostels because they were dirty.
