“Great value hotel”
Reviewed 25 November 2013

Our usual Kota Kinabalu hotel was full so we hunted around for another good budget hotel. For us, this means a clean, quiet room with everything working and air con, but we're not after anything else, like freshly painted walls, colour coordination, throw pillows etc!

City Park hotel is a little more expensive than our usual but the place is in a slightly better state of repair. Everything worked and was clean. The aircon was super quiet and the electric shower worked fine.

The staff were friendly and helpful including quick and effective discussions by emial prior to arriving. On arrival, they phoned the owner for information on tours for us. However, not all staff speak good English and occassionally this caused some inconvenience.

There is free wifi good enough for skype calls in the reception (and on the road outside!) but not in most of the rooms. There is also a computer in the reception for guests to use.

The location is great. Any hotel in the centre of Kota Kinabalu is a short walk or drive from anything in the town.

Note: They do not take cards! Cash only. There are several ATMs about a 5 min walk away.

Room Tip: Some rooms will have the sound of the live band nearby in the evenings. Rooms 304 and 305 are the hi...

- excellent location - all the following locations are accessible from the hostel -> taxi station in front, changer, grocery, restaurants, and a bar to the right, and gaya street for the sunday market and lots of shops/restaurants at the back.

- wonderful service - my companion had problems with her flight, so we had to change bookings multiple times but the staff was helpful with each change. they also suggested tours/places to check out.

- cleanliness - the beds were clean, and they even changed our sheets after night. the private shower/toilet was clean as well.

- re: noise from the bar - we stayed at the triple room which was on the side of the bar but it wasn't that noisy and the band was barely heard at night.

- the only downside for me is that there is no elevator in the building which is no problem if you've only brought a backpack but can be if you brought a suitcase.

I and my wife stayed here for 3 nights beginning of January 2013. The place is in the city centre. Walking distance from restaurants, shopping mall and jesselton pier. I made the booking, but for wrong dates. The receptionist was very kind and gave us a room at the rate I got from Booking.com. The room had working A/C, was clean and basic. For the price I paid it was good enough. The lobby of the hotel is very cosy, there are 2 tables with chairs, I sofa and television. There was also coffee and tea. There is also free wifi available. The staff was very kind and helpfull during our stay. They arranged our loundry on time, helped us finding rent a car. really kind and helpfull.

I typically stay at City Park Lodge on my trips to Kota Kinabalu, usually because I am on a budget. The owner and staff are always friendly and can arrange for airport transfer at a nominal fee if you request it. The most important thing here is however the location. You are minutes away (walking distance) from everything, whether it is to the Jesselton Jetty for the islands, or great seafood, the supermarket etc. The weekend market is just downstairs at the back. The rooms are however pretty small, if you've been to Japan business hotels, yups, that's about the size. The place is great for singles or couples on a budget backpacking trip. The lounge area has a PC, there is cable and of course Internet.

I don't recommend this place for families with babies as there is no place for a crib, with just enough space for small pieces of luggage. However, yes, there is no lift. So if you have the pleasure (or not) of staying at the top floor, well, I practically climbed up on my hands and knees after a day at the beach. I can imagine after a climb up and down Kinabalu, this is probably not exactly the most enjoyable way to get back to your bed. No tubs, just shower, but great with hot water.

I just booked a Twin Private room for me and my colleague for a short vacation on Oct 31 to Nov 5. May I know how long will it take from the airport to this hotel? What is the mode of transportation and how much is the fare?

Stayed here for 4 nights, the hotel rooms are clean and the location are near to everything (jetty to islands, gaya market, eateries). very good wifi connection and free pc usage.

but there is no lift in the hotel, so as others mentioned, climbing stairs up to 3rd floor is not an easy task. luckily i got the room at 1st n 2nd floor. The noise of club nearby only till 1am, so its not a big problem for me but for those who are very easy to be waken up, think twice as the wall of the room quite thin.

there is also free water and microwave, fridge for use. The receptionist and cleaners are friendly though.

Overall i am really satisfied with the hotel and the price is the main reason (RM110 for 4 and RM60 for 2), will come back again for sure.

Room Tip: Room 202 or room 203

I stayed a nite after our climb up Mt Kinabalu.. The room was clean and fairly comfy for a great nite rest.. Location is great.. It was a street away from the Sunday Market at Gaya Street, Lots of coffee shops for food.. I was in a lounge for a short while - had a PC where I could access my email and social network.. Hot water and coffee available. Was most impressed with the attentiveness of the "uncle" or perhaps the boss at reception.. He noticed who went in/up and out/down of the hotel.. So feels like a safe place to stay.. The lodge also has luggage storage where I had used it to store items that was not needed for the trek.

Room Tip: This is a walk-up hotel.. Not advisable if you have difficulties climbing up or down..
