Gaya Centre Hotel
Ranked #24 of 92 Hotels in Kota Kinabalu
Reviewed 2 April 2013

I stayed in a Deluxe room for 8 nights. The room I had was 1115. I booked through booking.com and got breakfast included in my deal.

I would classify this hotel as a budget hotel (3 star), but it is still a great hotel with great value for money. My room was on the 11th floor and had great views of the South China Sea. To get the kind of view I had in one of the major hotels EG: Le Meridian or Hyatt, I would've been paying 3 x the price.

The hotel is located in a great spot, right across the road from the sea, as well as Suria Sabah shopping centre. It is also a short walk from the marina and Filipino market.

There is a good travel operator included within the hotel. There are also other operators at the back of the hotel, but all the travel operators all charge roughly the same price. See Rita at the Gaya Centre, she is really switched on and will look after you well.

If there was one down side to my stay, it was that the hotel has a habit of playing music in the hallways at a very loud volume. So loud that you can hear it in your room, even above your TV. I had to ring on 3 occasions to get staff to turn it down.

Also don't use any of the taxis outside of the hotel. If you need transport to the airport, book through the travel agent, located within the hotel. It will only cost you 30 ringgit. The drivers out front will charge you more!

Overall, I enjoyed my stay here.

Dont expect anything great here, but for the price it is a good option, well located in the centre within walking distance of the fish markets and malls, close to services and clean and functional. Its a good option if you are just staying in KK before moving on to Mount Kinabalu or other parts of Sabah. Rooms are average as is service compared to the more expensive options, no pool, but is all ok. No complaints and for the price its good value for money.

Checked into Gaya Centre Hotel after conquer Mt. KK for two night stay. We stayed in studio suite room with 2 queen bed and it's more than enough space for 3 of us. Room is clean & spacious and overlooking the sea and island opposite, but no wifi available in the room.
The hotel is located at the end of Jalan Tun Faud Stephen and it is stone throw distance to Jesselton Point, jetty where you can set off to Tun Abdul Rahman Marine Park for island hopping. It is also about 10 min walk to Filipino market (night market selling bbq seafood) and KK Waterfront where you could chill out at a nice bistro pub or lounge.
A shopping mall Suria Sabah is located opposite the hotel.
Breakfast spread is limited but good enough to make ourselves full.
Overall, the hotel matches with the value that we paid for.

Room Tip: Pay a little bit more for the Studio Suite room if there's more than 2 travelers.

I booked the studio suite and the room is a bit small but ok for the price i paid.
The hotel location is excellent - walking distance to Jesselton jetty (the marina park), all the markets (handicraft, fish etc), seafood stalls. The supermarket is on the 3rd floor. Take the lift from the Suria Sabah back entrance opposite the hotel. Tour operators are at Wisma Sabah which is behind the hotel - car rental, tours etc.
Unfortunately , no wifi in the room.
Breakfast selection was fine for me. No shortage of tables or food.

Room Tip: Request for room away from the main roads - quieter. mine was facing Wisma Sabah instead of facing t...

Good location, close to Jesselton Point, where to take ferries to several outlaying islands such as Pulau Sapi, Pulau Manukan etc...And Suria Sabah, a good shopping mall is just oppositing this hotel...

Average amenities, almost every inevitable hospitality amenity is available in the room, and how about breakfast? Also average by taste but abundant by choice...rooms are not so big but acceptable.

No wifi, a very strange point is, there is no Wifi in the room and guests can only use wifi in the lobby on the ground floor...so every night you can find some guests sitting in the lobby and then surf on internet, it's a disaster for the youth if there is no internet somewhere...

Room Tip: No wifi in the room, no free transfer bus service from the hotel.

There's not much to choose in between low end backpacker joints and luxury beach resorts in KK. This hotel is ideal for those who shun the former and can't afford the latter. It's also well located and has great sea views over to the islands, which are well worth a visit from Jesselton Quay. Here you can arrange diving trips. Avoid boat touts near the market. There is no hotel pool or fitness suite. The hotel is clean and pleasant. The staff are great. The breakfast was good, but the evening meal was a let-down. Never mind, you have some terrific dining options nearby, namely Chilli Vanilla and Little Italy. If you want a good deal on excursions speak to Peggy who has a diving gear shop/travel agency right next to Air Asia on the main street behind the hotel. She will look after you if you want to visit Kinabalu National Park (unmissable) or the wetlands/proboscis monkeys/fireflies trip (ho hum). Save your money and see the monkeys and other wildlife at the wild animal sanctuary which you can do by taxi. I wouldn't trust the guys on the hotel door who seem to have a scam going with the local taxi drivers. (Think of a number and double it.) Instead walk around the corner to the nearby taxi stand and negotiate a fair price. The tourist information office near the hotel will give you an idea of what the taxi fares should be. The drivers never use their meters.
I digress. Our room was quite large, clean and comfortable with a great view over the South China Sea. Shame about the trash floating in the blue, clear water. Breakfast was adequate with a choice of eastern and western food. Just ask and they will rustle up an omelette, scrambled eggs, boiled or fried eggs. Plenty of fresh fruit was available. We were charged a refundable "deposit" on arrival. 100 MYR. Not sure why. Don't forget to ask for it back when you check out. If you don't ask, you wont be offered it back. I wrote a reminder to myself on the front of my keycard wallet. Overall, with certain provisos, this place gets the thumbs up.

Room Tip: Ask for a sea view on a higher floor.

Stayes here couple of times for business purposes. Strategically located, between Suria and Wisma Merdeka. Walking distance to the jetty and to Jalan Gaya area. Rooms are decent with high pressure shower. You can either opt for city view or sea view. However there is no wifi in hotel rooms and it's only available on the ground floor and cafeteria at level 4. Cafeteria is facing the sea Ns there's a balcony area where you can bask under the sun with the sea in front of you while having breakfast. Overall a pretty decent place to stay.
