“Adequate and comfy!”
Reviewed 15 April 2014

There were 4 of us and we stayed here for 3 nights. We took the family room that had 2 bunk beds and 2 single beds.
This place is adequate enough for backpackers. Has hot showers and aircondition was heavenly in Sabah's heat. 20 mins walk to the market at Jalan Simsuran, 30 mins from the airport. Few mins walk to. Bus terminal that has buses taking your everywhere. Beds were comfortable as well and the place is amazingly clean!
Masada also has serve it yourself breakfast with toast and jam and "press" milo - awesome if you just wanna have a cuppa and chill out.

Tip: use the back gate. Has a metal staircase going up taking you to the washing area first. Its more bright compared to the main entrance and the place can appear seedy at night. Just a caution if you're coming back late ;)

It's basic but well thought out, has everything u need. Staff are friendly and place is very clean, breakfast is provided which is great and is central. Perfect place to stay while in KK. They also put movies on in the eve for everyone to watch and chill out. Nice atmosphere in the place.

I just left Masada and had to post a review. This place is amazing. I've been traveling for years and wish that all hostels could be exactly like this.

Location: out of the busy part of town, quiet and safe with plenty of restaurants and street food around. Right next to the fresh fish hawker center.

Owners and staff: Incredible. The staff are always friendly and helpful (they have bus schedules and will even make phone calls for you to get more info from the places you're going). I actually had to go to the hospital on my third night and when the owner found out, he immediately canceled the taxi that the reception called and offered to drive me. After waiting 30 minutes at a clinic, he then drove me to the hospital and waited another 2 hours while I checked in. Over the next 3 days he and his wife came to check on me numerous times and offered to drive me back to the hostel upon being discharged. They even stored my things in a locker while I was gone. They're amazing people.

Breakfast: cereal, milk, fresh fruit, milo's, tea, bread, and jam/butter.

Rooms: soft beds, clean sheets, and you get TWO PILLOWS!

Bathrooms/Showers: separated and constantly cleaned.

Security: Cameras are everywhere. Front and back doors are locked and you have to be buzzed in. They have a 24-hour reception so you never get locked out. Lockers in every room to secure your things. They'll keep your excess stuff locked up if you hike Kinabalu.

Common Area: Couches, chairs, tables, etc. and a large TV with American movies playing. Other guests are really chill. They cut off TV and "loud noise" at 10PM which is great if you need to wake up early (which most trips require).

If you want to feel at home, stay at Masada. It's wonderful. They're trying to open up another one closer to Kinabalu. If they do, I'd highly recommend it. Apparently hostels up that way aren't very good (not clean or safe) so a good hostel up there is long overdue!!

In short, stay at Masada. It was recommended to me by some friends. I'm writing this review on behalf of all of us: we couldn't be happier!!

Room Tip: All rooms are great, especially the dorms.

I stayed here for 4 nights and I have to say it was definitely one of my more pleasurable experiences at a hostel in the world. Very clean, the staff was incredibly polite and accommodating, and the other guests were cool to chill with. I always felt safe and it was a great base of operations. My only complaint is that the staff couldn't really recommend any great places to eat, so be prepared to search a bit for that. Besides that, thanks Masada!
