“Home away from home!”

Stayed here with my husband for one of the best weeks' holidays we've ever had! Bedrooms are basic & simple, but clean & tidy, which is all we needed as you only sleep/change in your room. The rest of the house was lovely and it was just like staying in a friends home rather than being cooped up in an impersonal hotel. You had access to books, a computer & wi-fi, a piano if you played, TV, and tea, coffee or toast whenever you wanted. It was about 5 mins from Kota which was fine for us as we didn't want to stay in the city centre, which was only a short taxi ride away anyway.

Favourite room was downstairs in the breakfast room which is open to the garden. Loved bringing our books down there after a busy day of sightseeing; breeze from the ceiling fan, sipping coffee, listening to the birds in the garden and keeping an eye out for the squirrels in the trees! So peaceful.

But the best part were the people. Mary our housekeeper, spoke virtually no English, but was always smiling and looked after us wonderfully. Fatimah, who was just the loveliest lady, always there to greet you with a smile every morning and answer whatever questions we bombarded her with! Nothing was too much trouble for her; from what you might like to try for breakfast, shopping or sightseeing advice, to organising a taxi for us into Kota. All the local guides we had for our booked tours and dinner outings were wonderful, so helpful and knowledgeable, with Damian being absolutely exceptional! Think he knows everyone in Sabah and no matter what questions we asked him, he had the answer! We found them all to be so kind & courteous, they looked after everything for us and made the trip so much more relaxing & enjoyable.

Staying in a guest house, we also got to meet and chat with fellow tourists, a Russian couple and an Aussie mum & daughter, who were also very lovely people. So breakfast was always fun with conversation and laughter. You only had to ask and they would make whatever you'd like. Banana pancakes were amazing, great omelettes, our special Malaysian breakfasts & fruits, everyday there was something different to try.

If you like holidays staying in 5 star hotels in the centre of town, with in-room TV, internet, mini-bar & room service; then DON'T stay here. It won't be for you! But if you like to meet & interact with people, try and learn something about the country you're visiting, and stay in a casual and homey environment; then this was the place to be! We were both sad to leave at the end of our stay and say goodbye to Fatimah & Mary. Would love to come back there with our adult children one day!

“What a gem”
Reviewed 7 April 2013 for a stay in March 2013

Stayed for 6 nights.
This converted family home ts just that. Not your "sterile", take a number hotel; room. More like a visit to a favourite Aunty's place.
Nico, Fatima and the ever smiling Mary made us feel totally welcome and relaxed from the moment we took off our shoes on arrival until the last second before we (sadly) departed. Nothing was ever too much trouble to them.
Special thanks to Fatima for introducing us to Nasi Lemak for breakfast - Delicious!
Package tour was the perfect blend of activity and relaxation.

“Peacefull, homely stay.”
Reviewed 6 April 2013 for a stay in March 2013

Welcomed warmly by Fatima on arrival to what appeared to be a 3 story house. it was very homely and gave the feel of a bed and breakfast. Communal eating and entertaining area, no TV in rooms. My friend and I were given adjoining rooms with a shared bathroom between us. Rooms were clean and adequate despite minimal dated decor. Breakfast was basic but it was convenient having it made at at time that suited us. Housekeeper was very sweet but knew little to know English so it was difficult getting any information from her. Overall our stay was pleasant here, but due to the fact that it is a bit of a tricky walk into the city, I wouldn't stay here again unless I hired a car.

“All the charms of a secluded getaway with the perks of a city nearby”
Reviewed 31 March 2013 for a stay in March 2013

Beautiful character home set in lush tropical gardens. The house had all the comfiorts of home with plenty of space to relax and every facility required. The city centre is a mere 5min drive or 15min walk (only for the heartstrong) away, yet lying in you room overlooking lush green forrests as far as you can see, with the sounds of birds chirping and squirrels rustling in the trees, you would never guess a city was so close by. The breakfast were cooked fresh for me individually every day, and coming back here at the end of each day really did feel like home. It took me a while to find the hot water switch in my room, but sabah weather lends itself to cold showers anyway!! I was staying in the house all on my own for most of my holiday, and it always felt extremely safe and secure. I would definately stay here again!

“Pleasant stay, best suited to large groups”
Reviewed 27 December 2012 for a stay in December 2012

Stayed for 4 nights as a family of 5 hence booked the whole house out. You can lease out individual rooms.
Location is about 20 minute drive from KK airport and is situated on ridge behind main city with nice views to the north all the way to Mt Kinabalu. The area is quiet and walking is pleasant early in the morning. You can walk all the way into town but probably not a good idea in the middle of the day.
The house is airey with a nice lower uncover area where breakfast is served. Fatimah and Mary are lovely hosts. Breakfast is a simple affair with some nice variety and local touches. House is set on 4 levels so lots of stairs. Furnishings are clean but dated (very 70s feel), Bedrooms come with all bedding, but very hard beds by Western standards. Bathrooms basic but clean but could use a facelift. WIFI was unreliable.
There are heaps of bedrooms so this property would suit a large extended family or group. Less than around 6 people and it is relatively expensive to hire the whole house based on experience with lodging elsewhere in Sabah.
No pool, but a jacuzzi is apparenty due to arrive soon.
Car hire was also arranged by villa management which was handy. Flexibiity on check-in/check-out times was also appreciated
Overall a pleasant stay
