“Perfectly situated, all the comforts of home, fab sunset views”
Reviewed 2 December 2013

After two weeks here, I think you would have to be pretty picky to find any fault with the Horizon Hotel, everything that is promised is delivered... and more.

1. Location: The Horizon is very central - right in the thick of things and it's super easy to spot from wherever you are in town, so it's easy to get your bearings and find your way back. The Sunday markets on Gaya Street are a 30-second walk from the front door. The waterfront is a five minute walk in the other direction. It's also a short walk to Wisma Merdeka and Suria Sabah shopping malls or to the nightly fish/food markets in front of the Meridien and to Jesselton Jetty.

2. Room: I stayed in a deluxe seaview room and it was like a home from home. There is a neat little kitchen 'hidden' in the wall, with kettle, bottled water and a mini fridge that you can fill with your own drinks etc. Wifi access was very good. My laptop had a little trouble on the first day locating the network, but the hotel sent an IT guy up to my room to sort it. Talk about service! There is a 42in plasma screen with a decent range of channels, including BBC Worldwide and Fox Movies. The wardrobe contains a big safe deposit box (large enough to fit my laptop, ipad and sundry other valuables). You'll also find in the wardrobe an ironing board, bathrobe and sarongs. The bathroom is very stylish, with round bathtub, rainshower and handheld shower. Lots of toiletries and they are replenished every day.The bed was super comfortable, with lots of pillows and they were exactly the right degree of softness.

3. Facilities: I didn't spend a lot of time by the pool, but could see that it was well maintained and had great views. There are only three loungers, but that's because there simply isn't room for more. The gym is better equipped than your average hotel gym and the lifeguard/gym assistant is very helpful. The spa on the 5th floor is open from midday to midnight and has quite an array of services. I had several one-hour foot and shoulder massages (very relaxing, I fell asleep during one of them).

4. Tours: the tour desk at reception is brilliant! I used them quite a few times, even did a couple of the tours twice! (fireflies and the national park tours). Catherine, Davis and Brendon, thank you!!!!

5. Food: I'm ashamed to say that I didn't go further than the breakfast buffet (plentiful, with a big Asian offering, but I'm a jam and toast person) and room service (which was perfectly fine - choice of burgers, rice dishes or noodles and prices are very reasonable).

6. Hotel staff: definitely one of the best assets of this hotel. Everyone - from those at the front desk, to the concierges, to the breakfast waiting staff and the lovely friendly faces who cleaned my room each day - were shining examples of warm professionalism. Hotels can be soulless places, but the staff here really make you feel like part of their family. I love the way that they manage to be quite unobtrusive and yet so totally efficient.

Overall, I have had a fantastic time here (one day to go, but I'm not expecting any nasty surprises) and I would say, if you're considering staying in Kota Kinabalu, the Horizon Hotel represents excellent value for money. I'd been tossing up between the Horizon and the Meridien (central location and sunset views being my priorities) and I'm very glad I chose the Horizon.

Room Tip: Corner sea view rooms (ie room numbers ending in 27) offer fantastic sunset views, looking towards t...

This hotel provides very good range of facilities and services, the concierge was extremely helpful and location good.

We ate in the deco cafe and Asian restaurant and were very happy with the standard of food.

Rooms were clean, pool, gym and spa facilities good and all contributed to a pleasant stay.

We were offered a free room upgrade on arrival and the junior suite was very nice. We didn't spot on the bill until after that we did actually end up paying for the upgrade but didn't mind too much as the extra price was worth it for a large room, free standing bath and separate shower, huge bed and great view.

Stayed 4 nights in November 2013. The hotel is centrally located in town and within walking distance to the popular eating establishments and malls. KK in itself is not a large city but it never hurts to be in the centre of it all and save some walking time. The room was clean and had good lighting (rare among hotel rooms). What I was not pleased with was the low water pressure making showers less than satisfying. The hot-cold mixer in the shower was also not of a good quality and water temperature varied during the shower. Lastly the rain shower was not working in my room. My other dissatisfaction would be the breakfast. Sure they offered a decent spread, but food quality was poor, lacking taste and generally unappetizing. There are inexpensive and much tastier breakfast options nearby the hotel if one does not mind forgoing the hotel breakfast. Overall, it is a decent hotel and well located but for the price of the room, I expect there may be better options.

Room Tip: Rooms on the 6th floor facing the sea may be next to the swimming pool and may get noisy and also la...

Had an overnight stay & checked in late at night. Hotel restaurant closes after 10pm including room service. Wasn't able to try out their food for late dinner. Breakfast was overall typical Asian fare. Concierge very helpful (Dino). Rooms are starting to show signs of wear & tear. Overall very clean except the air cond is positioned directly to the bed & must make sure covering with blanket at all times to avoid catching a cold. Everything inside is quite modern.

Hotel is close to the airport (30 Ringitt) and is conveniently located. The rooms were modern, well-appointed, and clean. No big issues but not good for a relaxation holiday. I would recommend for business travellers who will be out most of the day. We had an early check-out the next morning and the hotel was kind enough to pack our breakfasts for us to take with us. Also, email communication with the hotel was very speedy/efficient except that in the end the hotel car that we had arranged never showed up at the airport. In any case, I would stay here again if I am expecting a short stay.

The best thing we love about this hotel room (deluxe king with seaview) is enjoying the seaview while lying on the bed! Overall the hotel score points for its location (near Suria mall, Jesselton Point Jetty, KK plaza, night market, waterfront, eateries), comfort of the room, nice pool with sea view and staff service.

However, there are also a few minus points. I was greeted by a cockroach in the bathroom on the day of arrival. Luckily, it disappeared and never reappear for the rest of our stay. The wifi reception is extremely slow! The rainshower water flow is not working well. The water sprayed to different directions and we used the narrow shower head instead. Our room level has cigarette smell and some of it lingered into our room. If you do not mind the above minus points, it is overall still a recommended hotel to stay at KK.

Room Tip: Choose the deluxe king room with sea view where you can enjoy the view while lying on your bed!

Loved the hotel. Was in the middle of the city and easy access to food, restaurants and convenience stores. Room provided (although was smoking and not what was reserved as the non-smoking room was not ready at 2 pm) was nice. The bathroom and bath tub was what I loved the most together with the design on the room. It really made my day.

Room Tip: Ask fro high floor and rooms with a bath tub
