“Clean, modern city hotel”
Reviewed 16 March 2014 via mobile

Many of the hotels I stayed at in Sabah were really not that clean despite being highly rated. This hotel was clean, comfortable and modern with good facilities and just on the edge of the central part of town. Breakfast was a bit of a scrum but all in all a good city hotel.

If you are looking somewhere that's near enough the centre you can walk in that's got a pool & gym then Ming Garden is ideal.

It's not as posh as the photos but the rooms are clean, nice the air conditioners work well ( if a little noisy) and the beds are nice and big comfy with regular changes of linen.

The staff were always smiling and cheerful and helpful when you walked past or with booking the free shuttle into town or changing money. Breakfast was fine with lots of choice.

The pool was nice and warm but there wasn't enough loungers if you wanted to relax by the pool. Drinks were expensive if you had them.

The hotel is within a ten minute walk. If you bear right out if the main door towards the main road you will see some steps and a hidden gate which give quicker access to the town if you want to walk which isn't noticeable till you walk back. Saves a 5 minute detour all around the perimeter. The taxi from the airport was £15 as we arrived after midnight.

I could recommend a stay at ming garden.

We came to Sabah, Malaysia, to see the orang-utans, and decided to use Kota Kinabalu as a base from which to do so. The Ming Garden Hotel was recommended to us by our travel agent, and what a good recommendation it has proved to be! Located in the city, next to the highway, and only ten minutes drive from the airport, the hotel has proved very convenient for exploring the sights, all of which are within a few minutes drive! Our very reasonably priced premium junior suite is very clean; modern; well appointed; has TV, aircon, fridge, free wifi, iron and a view over the sea to the islands beyond. That said, it's not a beachside hotel, and shouldn't be thought of as one to avoid disappointment. First Beach, with it's nice white sand, palm fringed shore, and very reasonable restaurants, is only five minutes drive away. The hotel offers a very good free bus service throughout the day that has multiple drop off/collection points throughout the city to the ferry terminal. I would recommend getting off at the CentrePoint Shopping Mall and taking the short walk to the night market directly in front of the Meridien Hotel. Here you can choose from a wide range of freshly prepared local foods and drinks. Breakfast at the Ming Garden is much to our liking, offering a very acceptable large range of traditional and 'western-style' foods. The swimming pool, Rosewood Lounge and Sparks add variety to the hotel's eating and entertainment options. The hotel staff are very pleasant and attentive. All-in-all a very pleasing and very affordable stay, about which there is much to be recommended. I wouldn't necessarily suggest it as a holiday hotel destination for families with children of any age.

Room Tip: Our room faced across the highway towards the sea, but there was no street noise. Ask for a room on...

I like this hotel even though there is no bath tub in my bathroom, but the rain shower is nice. The swimming pool area is relaxing. Though the hotel is not located near restaurants, or convenient stores, but taking cab is convenient to reach Suria Mall and some tourism spots.

Stayed 7 nights. Room is spacious, shower room is adequate with a nice option of 'rain'. The decor is nice although the light colored carpet showed many stains. Suggest you use the supplied slippers?

We had booked a superior double room which by the description from booking.com came with a bathtub. I queried the front desk and was told only the executive rooms had a bathtub. I emailed booking.com and received a quick reply. Bottom line, not sure who is lying as the hotel website description for the room does not mention a bathtub. Booking.com took ownership of the issue and offered us a discount on our stay. Great customer service from them.

I would like the hotel to have been more central, but they do have a convenient free shuttle service which will save around RM15 for a taxi. Advise to plan your day before and book your place on the shuttle. Be wary of shuttle drop of points for you return.

The pool is great and very relaxing. It has a constant depth so no need to worry about sinking. We never tried the gym so cannot comment.

We included the buffet breakfast with our room. The selection was plentiful but often empty as the place was usually busy especially at weekend. Breakfast closes at 10:30 and one morning around 10:15 while trying to get a tea bag as the huge plastic tea urn was empty, all the staff had dissappeared. The tea also had a coffee taste which reminded me of the tea served on American Airlines.

I would stay here again but would probably select a more central hotel as we did not use the pool or gym much.

Room Tip: Verify the room descriptions before booking. Check hotel and tourist locations on Google maps.

The hotel was very nice . a few more english speaking staff would be more helpful. Bit of hassle to walk to town centre . we were not told that there was a shuttle bus. which is very disappointing and we caught taxis . I got severe seafood poisoning on the last day from eating at the waterfront . seafood fried rice.
