“Beautiful island but lots of tourists!”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 July 2014 via mobile

Beautiful island, visited using the star marina from the shangri la hotel and they had their own small section of beach with sunbeds which was nice. We felt this was the more mainstream of all the islands we could visit, it had the best facilities ie toilets and restaurants etc however with this comes the most tourists. We made a point of doing the jungle trail, a lot of fun, and great as we got to see some huge monitor lizards basking in the sun. The snorkelling was ok but as I said lots of people in the sea, we actual found the snorkelling was better and we saw more on the quieter islands.

“Coral very degraded. Crowded”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 June 2014

I went to Mamutik Island while staying Shangri-la Tanjung Aru, using the resorts Marina. The resort has an area on the beach reserved with sun lounges and minimal facilities.
The coral is very degraded but there is a wide variety of fish to see while snorkelling. There are a number of (stalls?) seeling food but I did not try and of them.
A warning, the public toilet facilities are disgusting. This is in tune with other toilet facilities, I have experienced in areas controlled by Sabah Parks in the Kinabatangan area and around Sandakan.
A reasonable way to soend a few hows snorkewlling within easy reach of Kota Kinabalu

“Nice place”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 June 2014

Booked day trip through oib, picked up at hotel abd taken 1st to Mamutik. We arrived early and looked great, clear water but hard on feet, water shoes recommended, 7 year old enjoyed 1st snorkeling experience and 3 year old had fun on sand. Snorkel equipment provided. We then went to Sapi, I prefer Mamutik as did not seem s busy and water clearer.

“Great place”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 June 2014

Booked through my hotel for a day trip. Got picked up at hotel, taken to pier, boated across, was served lunch, snorkeling gear was included, and then all transportation was same in reverse back to hotel. Really nice water. Island is small and there weren't many people there. Water is nice if you get away from the areas with a lot of people. I went over near the southwest end of the beach where the rocks extend out about 50m. Snorkeling around the rocks, especially on the outside of the rocks, technically not in the snorkeling area, was definitely the best of all. The water was clear and there was far more coral than there is inside the swimming areas. Most of the coral in the swimming areas has been trampled flat. It is basically sand and dead coral littering the ground. Where I went, there were more fish, even a couple VERY small sharks, better coral, no people, and it was a more pleasant swim. The lunch was not great but it was better than I expected. The snorkeling mask and snorkel are free but fins must be rented. Again, this was expected and cheap. I had a great time and the pics don't do it justice. I recommend as it is only a 10 minute boat ride from KK.

“bring your water shoes.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 June 2014

bring your water shoes folks. its not as sandy as other beaches. water is fine though, i went here 1st week of june and there was an okay number of tourist, not too crowded (i could imagine other months) beach mats and vest are 10 RM (brought my own snorkeling gear so im not sure what the rent is in there ) lunch is 45 RM and pretty ok selection of bbq stuff and some seafood. went parasailing 75RM (think i got a good deal because i was Asian and spoke tagalog filipino) although i think i had more fun in manukan islan since its a bigger island... great for just lounging and stuff... not much coral reef not unless you were scuba diving....
