If you are looking to be pampered and throw your cares away for a few days then stay here. A great 5* resort; lovely location, nicely designed, great pool, loads of facilities, not overpriced and a large spacious room.
We turned up without a reservation at 2am and managed to get a deal on a club suite. The club buffet is definitely enough food!
I would recommend Shangri-La as a good 5* hotel

We spent 10 nights as part of a trip around Malaysia . The hotel is a good base to explore the area whilst offering a comfortable surrounding.

We upgraded to a club room which was worth it as the rooms are located away from the main area of the resort and have beautiful views of the islands at sea. The club room also came with the added benefit of a free bar and canapés in the evening . This is a good addition as alcohol is quite expensive. Johnny ensured your glass was never empty.

There was a good choice of food. We ate in all the restaurants but enjoyed the Chinese and the Italian the most.

There are plenty of activities at the hotel including daily Pilates and yoga sessions which my wife throughly enjoyed. The setting for these could not have been anymore perfect .

The pool was large and allowed for plenty of swimming but we were recommended not to swim in the sea. There were plenty of lifeguards who ensured all guests remained safe.

We would definitely stay at the hotel again and it would be perfect for all sorts of travellers from couples to young families as there are plenty of activities for all.

Brand hotel located in the centre of city with irresistable private beach & sunset view in Sabah. Top choice to stay here for every family with kids to enjoy the breadfast buffet, water playland, pool & beach as well as private island shore by connecting the fast speed boat from its pier just walk distance to my room......perfect.

We stayed here for a total of 8 days and had a lovely memorable holiday but there were a few things that could be improved on.
On the positive side, the hotel is only 10 minutes away from the airport but you are not bothered by noise etc. As mentioned, the views are so beautiful looking out towards the islands and take your breath away. As mentioned in other reviews the sunsets are also pretty spectacular too.
The gardens too, are beautiful, and immaculately kept.
The infinity pool is one of the best I have been too, but there is a shortage of beds in the shade unless you get up very early.
The beach is very small but looks clean enough, again the sun loungers with shade are a not impressive.
We tried the buffet restaurant several nights and apart from one disappointing experience, we were extremely happy with the choice and the standard of food. We could highly recommend it.
And now some of the more negative aspects. We had booked into a club room, when we arrived no one helped us with our suitcases and we were just pointed in the general direction of our room which was not easy to find at first. This was not a huge problem but not what we expected from a Shangri la hotel. The room itself was spacious - Seaview, Kinabalu Wing, However it looked a bit tired, for example the bed head board was well marked from the heads of all the previous guests that had rested there, not exactly inviting.
We had no problems at all with the bathroom and its amenities
We visited the Orangutans at the Rasa Ria sister Hotel and were lucky enough to see two of the youngsters. Whilst there, we noticed big differences between the two hotels - first of all we were really welcomed. Secondly we spent the afternoon sunbathing, and the quality and quantity of the sun loungers and service from staff was so much better. It made us feel that we had chosen the wrong hotel. The shuttle bus back was also a bit of a nightmare, the driver picked up some passengers to drop off in the city centre and we ended driving around the town,.sometimes along the very same streets for over two hours when we were just about 10 minutes from the hotel.
On a final note, we do have fond memories of this holiday, and some of the staff in the Club Lounge were exceptional. We had np problems with any of the clientele at all .

Room Tip: Lovely views overlooking the South China Seas when you book Seaview rooms in the Kinabalu Wing. This...

Dear HollyDayYorkshire, thank you for staying with us on your recent holiday. I am concerned to learn that our colleague at reception did not provide you with the usual Shangri-La experience - these have been shared with my team for improvement. Whilst you may have found the rooms a little tired, we have made every effort to ensure they are well maintained. We thank you once again for your valuable feedback and we look forward to your return visit!

We experienced a wonderful stay. The Staff are amazing and engaged with the kids everyday. Andrew at the towels and water slides was awesome. The water slides were great for big and small kids. We did the daily challenges and had a fantastic time, ice cream for the winners and all participants was a wonderful extra. I also recommend the cooking demonstration. Curried prawns were fantastic.
The food is amazing and very safe as none of us got sick. The buffet dinners, free for kids was great value. The breakfast was also delicious. Even with the crowds the staff were extremely calm and helpful. The sunset bar had great views. CoCo Joes was also fun with the live music.
The ladies who cleaned our room were the best I have ever encountered. Nothing was a problem and they also treated us by name.
It was my 40th Birthday and my husband and the staff organised a lovely cake and wrote happy birthday in beautiful flower petals. A lot of the staff wished me Happy Birthday all week which was lovely.
We stayed in the Ocean Room which was lovely.
Only minus is the saving of lounge chairs, some didn't have people on them all morning. However we always found at least two chairs. The fresh water around the pool was an added plus.
Thank you to all the wonderful staff you made our vacation a wonderful experience.

Room Tip: If you have kids the ground floor is great as they just go straight out and play.

Stayed here for 7 nights with my wife for a holiday over Christmas 2013. We had club room access. the staff all over the hotel were extremely warm and friendly.

Breakfast in the club room had a good variety, with choice a la carte or buffet. We had two a couple of dinners in the hotel. Good service and range of offerings.

City centre is about $30 Malaysian Dollars by taxi. plenty of eating and massage options nd some shopping.

The pool in the hotel was large, clean and well managed. the staff made sure that children were kept out of the adults only area. the private beach is very small and not worth writing about.

you can book a snorkelling tour form the hotel. this tour is ver good value and you can rent all necessary equipment at an excellent price.

three tennis courts on offer. We brought or own raquets with us and the hotel provided balls, towels and iced bottle water.

i highly recommend staying here.

Room Tip: go for club room.

This place (we are still here) is very good. I really wanted to give it a four star rating but compared to my other large hotel experiences its just a bit below 4. Anyway, its a very busy hotel, we were told100% capacity yet in the wing we are in you would hardly know it, over looking the mini golf course is very quite. The mostly Chinese clients are quickly taking over the Japanese in their quest for craziest photo takers, this makes it a bit hard to walk around the grounds without being told to stop so someone can take the 50th photo of his girlfriend.
The staff are fabulous, I watched a very rude Chinese guy yesterday ranting because the staff had said 1 to 2 persons in an accent that sounded like 1 to 2 percent. the guest was very rude and we were amazed how tolerant the barman was. In Australia he may have been thrown in the pool.
The sunset bar is pretty funny, I forget that as Australians we see many fantastic sunsets, but yesterday there was a 100 or so people taking photos, it was really nice to see.
food is great however someone should tell the Chinese guests that there is plenty of food to go around and we will not starve, pushing isn't the way to get your eggs any faster. Drinks compared to the Australian prices are cheaper and out on the street as usual cheaper again, but I dont feel I need to take a second mortgage if I want to have a few drinks by the pool.
We arrived very early on the first day, this isnt Shangri La's fault but they made us feel welcome and have a special arrival area for tourists to hang out and sleep or make some tea before their room is ready. As for rooms they are great. huge beds (2 king singles pushed together) which is awesome. the airconditioning works well, no in house movies just the normal Malay t.v, if you like movies or t.v bring a hard drive with your favourite shows loaded.
Outside the hotel Kota Kinabalu is great, the food is wonderful and the locals very friendly. I really hope this place doesnt turn into Bali or the busy parts of Thailand. Give me the occasional rude chinese guest over fighting abusive australians any day.
Thank you Shangri la Tajung Aru, we will be back

Room Tip: if you want quiet the rooms over the mini golf course are perfect. level 2 is on the same level as t...
