Stayed at the resort last week 11th of April - 19th. We found it just - ok. The resort needs updating in a big way. We found the service less than shangri la type service. In general the staff was not happy.

Our cleaning staff was terrible ... and on two occasions we had stained sheets that we had to ask to be changed.

Disappointed in the food at the restaurants. The Chinese restaurant was not bad and room service had two things we liked 1.) Tom yum soup 2.) fish and chips ...otherwise disappointing.

Great location - a quick cab ride and you are in town.

Service really sucked. Waited over 45 min a few different times for drinks at the pool side.

Over an hour for room service??? Come on guys!

So much potential. The views and the pools are fabulous.

Overall this resort needs a refresher on the rooms, furniture, management, and service to bring it up to the shangri la.

Not cuttin the shangri la mustard.

i stayed recently for a conference so didn't get to take advantage of the facilities. However, i was impressed by the activities on offer, lovely pool and even an adults only pool area. I was less impressed with the food. However we did have conference style buffets so that may not be good to judge by. The room was lovely too and large.

Room Tip: I had a great view on the top floor, directly sea facing.

This hotel could be any old beach resort, it's nothing special. The people are friendly enough, it's not offensive, the pool is good and the facilities are acceptable. That's ok if that's what you're looking for which explains some of the rave reviews on here but that's not how this hotel is advertised.... It's a 5 Star Shangri-La, so you would expect a certain level of accommodation, service, facilities and dining. What you get is mediocre at best. Aside from the hotel looking tired (yes a photograph does lie) and it being in need of a thorough clean in parts, the staff are trying but they just don't cut the mustard; they're not really ready for the more demanding of us. I want what I paid for but it just doesn't deliver.

I normally save my reviews until the end of the holiday but I'm becoming ever more frustrated here. Things like the TV not working. A broken ironing board and leaking iron. Running out of salad by 1pm in the afternoon when there are at least 4 salad option on the menu at the pool bar (and it's a beach resort). The sunset bar apparently having a first come first serve policy for you only to find reservation notices on the tables. Waiting over an hour for poolside drinks. Making a request in the morning and it being completely lost...... And it goes on.

Shangri-La, you should not put your name above the door if you can not stand by your promise. Your customers expect more and we deserve it when you ask us to pay a 5 Star price.

We just came back from spending 5 nights at Shangrila Tanjung Aru. We paid $298/night for this so called 5 star hotel. In review, this hotel should be a 3 or 3.5 star at best. Breakfast was a madhouse of shuffling people, and food was not 5 star quality. This is like the CAFETERIA. Dim sum was fish ball or pork ball meat type on top of yesterday's fried chinese donut. There is a sign on a kids eating area that says the food is for the kids (what does that tell you about the quality of the other food if parents had to eat kids food??). The least Shangrila could do is open up the Shang restaurant and let people know about eating breakfast there so that we all could breath a little--this is a resort is it not? We ordered room service and I ordered "wok the chicken" for my kids: menu says stir fried chicken with peas, corn and carrot...what I got was stir fried rice with 1 PEA SIZED carrot and a few pieces of chicken (all for about $5USD). My husband ordered a Red Reuben sandwich for 30RM (about $10 USD) and got a rye bread sandwich with 1 THIN SLICED beef pastrami---not 2 or 3 slices but one thin slice. I can understand the need to make money on food...but this is RIDICULOUS.
Also if you are looking at this Shangrila because it says it has babysitting--BABYSITTING is only for 4 years old and older.
The shuttle bus to the other resort could be posted on the website so people can plan better.

Slow Service, people could be managed better. A girl standing at concierge could help the next person while the person in front was being helped by guy working on the computer, typing up receipts for the shuttle bus.

Better value at the other shangrila resort--which seems less crowded and more calm.
Bed was hard--sleeping on the pull out sofa was more comfortable than the BED!

Room Tip: If you plan on swimming all the time then stay at the Tanjung side. Our room was on the Kinubalu sid...

This hotel is situated in an idyllic coastal position. There is a sunset bar, where you can sit with a drink and watch the sun go down. It could actually be perfect, if a few silly things were addressed. The cocktail waiters and menu need updating. We didn't actually enjoy any of the cocktails we tried, and there was no care taken in a fancy glass or added extras like little umbrellas to make them special. Great pools, and love the fact that one is for adults only, we visited the other Shangri La resort Rasa Ria, where the only policy was that you must be able to swim, so kids that could swim were in there too. (I don't dislike children, but I like my adult space). The sun beds need maintenance, and unless you get down to the pool early, you are unlikely to get a bed. A pool bar would be a great addition.

No issues with the room, plenty of space, storage etc. comfortable beds, fridge unstocked which I prefer. Lots of toiletries which were replaced daily. Good aircon that switched off when opening the balcony door, which is great. I suppose if anything was missing it would be a docking station for the iPod. I loved the electrical socket in the safe to charge your devices, never seen that before.

Tour desk needs better contact with water sports, we asked about paddleboarding and boat trips, and were told we didn't need to book. When we arrived next day, the paddleboards were booked. Luckily we had one more day, but had we only been there for two days, we would have missed out. I think the watersports shop could be better stocked, if you had sold a disposable underwater camera, there were a few people there who would have bought one when going off snorkelling. Also, there are tables and chairs outside for family watching watersports, but only a machine selling soft drinks. A coffee machine would be a good addition.

Breakfast was lovely, we were in the Kinabalu Wing, and were directed to the Shang Restaurant for breakfast which was fabulous and less crowded than the Tatu.

I mean the above as constructive suggestions, because we had a great time. Made better by gorgeous weather and idyllic position.

Three stars is generous. The hotel has such potential - a great waterside location, great facilities and hundreds of staff. However, the hotel seems to know that anyone ordering food or beverages here is a captive audience, hence service is at best slow and uniformed, and the food is disappointing. On average after ordering at Coco Jo's, our drinks took at least 20 mins to arrive, food much longer The staff just don't seem to get it. A real pity. We stayed in the Kinabalu wing. The room facilities were basic - no coffee machine or sound dock, very basic toiletries, mini bar was not stocked on arrival, bathroom was very small for a hotel charging these sorts of prices. The soundproofing was also poor. We were hoping for a decent night's sleep but could hear every time someone walked past the room. Unfortunately there is currently no real competition in Kota Kinabalu for either of the Shangs and they clearly rest on their laurels knowing this.

Room Tip: Unfortunately they have a strictly no free upgrade policy, so you will have to pay extra for it,
