“Great stay”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 May 2014

I was very happy with my five days four nights at Shangri-La Tanjung Aru.
The pool and beach are lovely. Staff and included activities were very good - particularly the water aerobics with Paul and the flower arranging with Elda.
Enjoyed eating at the Italian restaurant. Loved the treatments I got at the Chi Spa (I had three and they were all amazing).
I also went to the sister resort (Shangri-La Rasa Raya) to see the orangutans which was really great & easy to organise (handled by the hotel).

The location and ambience of the hotel was just glorious. Having expressed interest in going to see the Orangutans we were immediately directed to the tour desk to arrange a trip across to the Rasa Ria the next day - a definite must. We had also pre-booked prior to leaving Australia a trip on the North Borneo Railway - THIS IS A MUST DO, there were many disappointed guests at the resort hoping to have the opportunity to go but unfortunately both the Wednesday and Saturday trips (they only run x 2 per week) were fully booked.
The resort amenities are first class - breakfast catered for all tastes and the restaurant provided both in-door and out-door seating.
We took the opportunity of visiting the "world class" spa - an experience not to be missed.

Room Tip: Our room was in the "older" section of the hotel on the Ground Floor with an Ocean View...

Interesting. The hotel is in a great location and the majority of staff and management are great. Consistency with execution would be useful. Upon arrival expect to be sold on an upgrade. If you accept this offer and agree to pay the additional cost of same, the process could be improved though clear terms and more direct communication about exactly what the cost is per night is and what benefits come along with the upgrade. Be cautious of the rate quoted, we were quoted a rate verbally for the whole stay which turned out to be a nightly increase rate once documents were presented. Was this an error or a sales technique. You be the judge.

The communication of the upgrade terms and conditions should also be stored on the internal system so that ambiguity and uncertainty are removed for other staff who you interact with. There is little point paying for the enhanced experience of an upgrade if it is not clear to hotel staff that you have indeed been upgraded and entitled to various concessions/benefits.

The purpose of the staff at the hotel should be to enhance and improve the experience to make guests want to choose the Shangri La group hotels in the future. In the main this is the case especially amongst the local staff. Some training and support is required for some of the Guest relation officers to ensure that understand their role in enhancing guest experience.

As a side note, breakfast in the main cafe is a fascinating experience in human interaction, but better avoided experience. Pay for the upgrade to the horizon floors to avoid the debacle.

Room Tip: Take the upgrade to the horizon floor but be clear about price in your discussions.

Simply outstanding, the service on all levels no matter the area within the resort is professional, courteous and very friendly.

A great place to unwind and just soak up Shangri-La's famous service, it is that good

I Highly recommend the Shangri-La Tanjung Aru Resort and it matches the level of service I have now seen at 5 different Shangri-La facilities

My wife and I visited out first Shangri La and I can say without any reservation it will not be our last. The staff and facilities are absolutely first class. It is the first time I have stayed somewhere where ALL the staff perform to such a high standard - they are all exceptional and friendly and nothing is to hard and they like to share a joke or two. We will be back - without a doubt. Also the view from the front of the resort is breathtaking. Overall experience - tremendous

There's one thing that makes this hotel stand out from the rest - the gorgeous sunsets! However, that is not to say that the hotel is very good for its own reasons too. Check in was quick and relaxed, with a cooling towel and welcome drink offered to us upon arrival. From the hotel's large colonial style open plan lobby branch out two residential wings - Tanjung to the left and Kinabalu to the right. Our receptionist must have had a confused moment, as she sent us to the left, and after an unsuccessful attempt to find our rooms, were apologetically redirected to the Kinabalu wing. This is a big hotel, and our rooms were a bit of a walk away, although the view from them to the South China Sea more than made up for that. The rooms are spacious, very clean, and with all the usual amenities you would expect from a 5 star hotel. There are four restaurants - the main restaurant is where a buffet breakfast and a nightly themed buffet is served, We had a good seafood meal here on our first night, but were put off the following day at breakfast time, when we saw two large cockroaches crawling around. There's a Chinese restaurant which also serves as an overflow for breakfast on busy days, and an Italian called Pepino, where we had a hugely overpriced meal, when four of us who had ordered risotto had to send it back as it was a totally tasteless stodge. A fifth dish was wrong and was turned back too. The replacement dishes were much better, but overpriced. The fourth restaurant is pool side and relatively decent for lunch. The swimming pool is beautiful, and being of the infinity type blends in with the calm sea beyond. There's a small beach where there's fine white sand and a warm sea, with this sitting between the spa on the one side and the sunset bar on the other. The latter is the place to be to watch the sun go down, but be warned that many non-residents descend on the hotel for this special view, and priority is wrongly not given to residents, which i complained about, after which we were reluctantly allowed in. With live music playing, cocktails and barbecued snacks available, with the red skies beyond, it is no wonder the place is popular. One other amenity worth noting is Star Marina, from where regular boats depart for Mamutik Island, where you can spend the day on a typical paradise coconut tree fringed white sand beach - gorgeous! There's all types of water activities available for a fee. One person who is worthy of mention is Concierge, Soon, who arranged our trip to sister hotel, Rasa Ria, where in the adjacent nature reserve we were able to see free roaming Orang Utans, and go on a tree top jungle trek, while spending the rest of the day in the hotel's wonderful beach. Check out was also quick, and with the close proximity of Kota Kinabalu Airport, it was a hassle free end to our Borneo adventure. Barring the 2 or 3 issues I've mentioned above, I have no hesitation in recommending this hotel.

A truly amazing experience for us from all perspectives. TOTALLY recommend!
The staff were so lovely, the room and view beautiful and the complex itself was ultimate resort style totally fitting with the Borneo location.
