“BEAUTIFUL AND ROMANTIC”
Reviewed 31 May 2014 via mobile

Staying in Tanjung Aru gives you a mixed feeling of a natural and modern habitat. It was a very beautiful place and we will be sure to stay there again. Also it is a beautiful place for a couple getaway considering that you are able to watch a beautiful twilight as the sun sets. The staff were also very respectful and friendly.

Not quite 5 star but what a beautiful hotel, we upgraded to the Kinabalu Club which gave us access to the Kinabalu Club...well worth the money. The hotel staff were just lovely, they couldn't do enough for us.
We loved the location and were fortunate to pick a quiet time for the hotel so we had the pool, gym etc virtually to ourselves. The adults area around the pool is an excellent idea and good to see it enforced by the pool attendants. The hotel is in a fantastic location, we took advantage of having the marina close by and took a trip out to the islands, again we were extremely well looked after as guests of the Shangri-La. I would definitely recommend a trip over to the islands.

We also went to the Rasa Ria to see the orang-utans, this was a very well organised trip using the hotel bus, we were able to use the hotels facilities for a couple of hours which was very comfortable though i would definitely stay at the Tanjung again as its close to the town which has a great night market, good simple restaurants and a few lively bars. Just good to experience the local culture.

Our room was on the 7th floor with a spectacular view over the South China Sea, It is not sparkling but very comfortable and we had no complaints with the amenities in the room. The television didn't go on once in five days!

All in all a great place to relax and take in some spectacular scenery with access to the local culture which is what going to Asia is all about. We will be back!

Our family (2 adults and 3 kids) stayed here for 7 nights. Overall the hotel was very good and staff friendly. The swimming pool area was nice for kids. Slides, games (chess, waterballoon fight, petangue, pingball etc). Kids club was ok, though we did not leave our kids there because our youngest one is not yet 4. From the star marina you can book island transfers or rent scooters etc. The prices overall are same as in Northern Europe, a bit expensive compared to Asian prices. The beach area was small but enough if you don't need to excersize water sports.

When booking the room, they told us that all the rooms are fitted so that 2+2 is ok and also us 2+3 will fit. When we arrived, they told us that we probably won't fit and offered uppgrade for a settled price. That I think should have been told before hand, especially because we called and emailed and asked about the rooms. Any way, we took the upgrade and the bigger room (living room and bed room with two toilets) was very nice and included club access. We ate the snack there every night (was actually meal for kids) and also breakfast after visiting once in the main restaurant. The selection was a bit more limited, but on the other hand it was not crowded and service was really good. You could also order foods from special breakfast menu in addition to buffet. Next to the club room, there were television room where kids could watch tv, while we ate.

The gym was ok and with ventilation. At the time we were there (May) the hotel was not crowded. To get to KK city you had to take a taxi from the hotel about 30 rm one way. We had a very nice holiday at Tanjung Aru.

We absolutely love this hotel and would recommend it to anyone in a heartbeat. Its's 5 mins from the KK airport and you're in paradise. We booked their Tanjung Suite. Lovely, comfy and well appointed. They have an awesome dinner buffet spread. The staff at the Club Floor were extremely friendly and very accomodating.

This is a 5 star resort with wonderful location and very helpful staff. Food and drinks were fantastic. Very kid friendly with large kids club and kids splash/pool area. Plenty to choose from.
The breakfast buffet is the best I have ever eaten T, and they have a specific table of treats for children with plastic plates and cups etc.
If you can afford the EXTREMLY high price I highly recommend you stay here.

Stayed here on our honeymoon for 3 nights after flying from Singapore, very relaxing, beautiful room (mountain view), very family orientated which was ok, maybe not very romantic!
Chose this hotel as luxurious & a 10/15 min taxi in to Kota Kinabalu. Left our baggage here whilst we climbed mount Kinabalu (amazing!!!) and returned back to the Shanghai-la (sea view room- nicer for sitting on balcony with a beer) & appreciated the luxury all the more after a 2 day hike & 1 night hostel stay! Made the mist of the tranquil spa by having a massage (again very good).

Breakfast was brilliant but a little manic if you got there at 'rush hour'
Enjoyed a day over on a nearby island, snorkelling etc although slightly disappointed with the litter but to be expected as near to large town (kk)

Room Tip: Loved waking up early to see mount Kinabalu but also liked the sea view...... Both lovely rooms!!
