“Just as Good second time around”
Reviewed 13 June 2014

We came here for a 50th Wedding Anniversary family celebration as we enjoyed the first stay so much. We were so pleased to see some familiar faces, namely Rohan, who never ceases to entertain and was ever so happy to see mummy again!

Everyday was made special by the incredible staff at this beautiful resort. Our cabana on the beach was a great place to watch the sunset and be looked after by the fantastic guys at Coco Joes. So many thankyous to everyone who made this trip so memorable.

A special mention to the following, Rohan, Tulip, Harry, Majid, Timothy, Azmi, Cynthia & Ahmad. All the staff were wonderful and extremely helpful. The only things that we could suggest to improve were maybe the carpets could be updated along with some of the room items and also to please bring back the old tv dinners on the menus, wonderful for a night in. Tatu;s menu was also a lot bigger last time and very limited this time around.

We would love to be back right now and so look forward to another stay in the future. Thoroughly recommend the Tanjung wing for the sunsets, could sit and watch them forever.

Room Tip: Tanjung wing has the best view of the sunset. If you want a quiet room stay away from the kids club...

Stayed in this resort hotel for 4 nights. Upon our request, a wheelchair was already prepared waiting for our arrival. We requested a room closer to the reception and was being given the 2nd room next to the lobby. However, for those who prefer quietness, you should have a room farthest away from the lobby as there was a rather noisy live band who performed almost every night until 11:45 p.m. Kids passing by also tend to be very noisy. The room was very clean, spacious and quite fully equipped. 2 complimentary bottles of water each day and there was a bit of tiny fruits like orange, apple and pear. There was free WiFi throughout the hotel but reception in room I think at best was about 80% stability and speed wise. Besides a few local channels, there were CNN, BBC, Fox Movies & Sports, Phoenix, KBS World, Japanese channel, CNHTC, Star World, Australia Network, TVBS, Micktoons and Disney Channels. There was also complimentary Wall Street Journal newspaper everyday.

The hotel has a private beach and large garden for strolling. There was also a fish pond in the garden area surrounded by rooms as well as another one in the open garden facing the sea. The hotel also provided other complimentary classes/activities for guests to attend. The spa was very good with 2 private jacuzzi tubs.

Breakfast was excellent with several kinds of fruit juices and fresh fruits. The variety of fruits was good and was being replenished once a certain kind was out of stock. There was a made-to-order noodle corner as well as egg corner. Didn’t realize there were as many as 9 ways of cooking eggs until in this hotel. There were congee, soya bean milk, miso soup and even Naan bread for breakfast. Most of the hot dishes and a couple of cold cuts were changed everyday which was not boring at all. There was a very smart and clean equipment to help those who wanted to cut their own pieces of bread. A plastic glove with metal ring was being placed on a metallic holder. Whoever wanted to cut bread could detach the gloves from the holder and place it back after use. Kids had their own corner, utensils and containers of the juices were being placed according to their general height which was rather thoughtful. There was also a cartoon character who walked around the restaurant to have pictures with the guests. There was indoor and outdoor sitting for the buffet restaurant. In the early morning when there were fewer guests, the aircon was rather cold eating breakfast indoor. Had dinner buffet but food was mostly South East Asian style which meant spicy taste in general. Considering the taxi fare of RM 60 for a round trip to downtown area, the dinner buffet of RM 120++ was quite reasonable.

The hotel was very kids friendly as it had a very large playground with 3 water slides for kids. There was also Water War game and the two baby & kid’s pools were being half covered by a tent. This was very thoughtful as both the kids and parents would not get burnt. As for adults, there was a very big and deep section (1.9 meters) of the pool for adults only. The pool was opened till quite late at 10:00 p.m. In addition, everyday there were complimentary classes like napkin folding, cooking demonstration, yoga and bird watching.

Overall it was a very good hotel except a few hit and miss:

1. Welcome drink was not served but in other days, we saw some guests were being served.
2. Replacement of the face towels were usually inconsistent and bathrobes were also not replaced after they were being used.
3. At the dinner buffet, 2 dishes were crabs. However, there seemed to be only one crab shell cracker which was being shared among all tables. Upon request, the waiter would get it from one table, just cleaned the cracker by wiping it with table cloth and then passed to another table.
4. Singing quality of the live band has lots of room for improvement.

The location is great, but the service is not.as food.as.that in rasa.ria in my.opinion, maybe due to the fact.that it is a busier hotel , especially the receiption staff. The pool is bravo and you can enjoy the.best.sunset in sunset bar in sabah. However , as a shangri la, i believe.the.service.can be better.

People make the place. This is our third visit to STAR and once again it delivered the goods. From the warmth and calm nature of the people working there, the sunsets, the pools, the water sports and plenty of great food, where else would you rather be? My kids love the pool and the 'Cool Zone' (kids club), my wife enjoyed her massage at 'Chi'. Happy wife, happy life. My only issue was leaving this bliss and returning to the real world!! Love this resort and will be back again....

The staff were great but the general service was poor. Twice when I asked for a meal I was told it was off the menu. Some items at breakfast were cold in the tureens. Mould in the bathroom sink. Bedroom not made up sometimes till late evening and then it was only the bed made up. Ice machine missing from the hall. Looks like it has had a cheap make over. Very poor for the money. Check out took 1/2 hour as the clerk didn't seem to know what to do with the couple in front then disappeared on me.

I stayed here with family (for 3 nights) and if you are still young at heart, you would absolutely love the waterslides, other water-features, pool and beach. This hotel is top-notch, excellent decor (fresh flowers decorate their lobby and room), lovely shady fragrant trees on their landscapes, fish pools, intricate traditional and ethnic designs adorn their passageways and most of the building structures; and their staff are polite and warm. I'd like to commend the staff at the restaurant pool areas as they have displayed warm and friendly smiles and hellos, and managed to handle situations well, despite the pressuring demands during school holidays and tiresome vacationers. Oh yes, the view at sunset is amazing. Just laze at the beach and sit back, relax and let nature take its cause. :)

This is a place to stay for at least 2 nights or it's such a waste given its great facilities, amazing service and wonderful views. Breakfast spread was amazing! I wish I had a larger stomach! Location is beautiful. A perfect holiday resort. Well kept and nicely landscaped. I could just go on and on. My only complain is the TV reception - not too clear; but that's just minor coz there are so many other reasons to be outdoors, or just chill in the room to read a book and laze in bed enjoying the silence apart from the waves outside.
