“Pleasant stay”
Reviewed 2 August 2014

It was a pleasant stay. I love the infinity pool and walking along the seaside. Also, I have to thank for the 2 staffs from Marine Star. My phone was blown into sea due to sudden strong wind and storm. While I was hopeless and left, they dived into water and found it. It was a great surprise to me and I am so grateful for their help.

We have just returned from 5 days staying at the resort hotel which was extremely busy due to the end of Ramadan holidays in Malaysia. Nonetheless the services, staff and food were excellent. We stayed at the same resort in 2007/8 over the Christmas holidays and found exactly the same standards but now there are upgrades to the facilities. Many of these are just for children but the new Star Water sports base and organisation is very good and reasonably priced. Though we were not warned that the islands where snorkelling is available would be totally packed with partying groups so that there was almost no room to get into the limited space in the water. It would appear that in trying to conserve the heritage site, they have cut the size of areas for exploring underwater too much for comfort. Our only other negative was that the rooms have still not been redecorated or refurbished. Still look the same as on our previous visit. This did not mean we did not enjoy ourselves as the food, service ands staff rate 5 Stars.

Room Tip: Wait for the promised upgrade in 2015!?

Relaxing place . Average food . Chill by the pool. Finish your dinner by 9.30pm as things start to close ahead of the official timings. Dont expect any fresh poolside towels after 7pm so keep the ones you already have . Its a beautiful resort by the sea so enjoy it

Nice place but not what it should be. Expected a much better place but it was swamped, good for them, but not that great for the customer. Pool was seriously packed. Towels where hard to get. Tried the restaurant which was not that great imo. I would notcome back here. Rasa Ria beat it by at least 2 miles.

luxury resort? not quite think so. everything all not in good maintenance. Especially the children pool area and children activity area in Cafe Tatu and by the way just forget about the beach in this resort. Just unexpected this is Shangri-La's quality except the good quality photos in their website.

My family (husband, myself and our 21 month old daughter) just got back from the Shangri-La this weekend and had a great stay!

PROS -

Pool - the pool is amazing! The walk in pool was perfect for our daughter, as was the "circle pool" as she called it. They both are very kid friendly and there was ample room for everyone at the resort. The water slides were also a huge hit with all of us, as was the "bucket" and water balloon area for a mid-day water balloon flight. The adults only pool is small, but was really nice to use while our daughter was napping - and it has a beautiful view of the sea.

Staff - The staff at the hotel was wonderful. Everyone was extremely friendly and helpful.

Food - Coco Jo's was great! We ate there every day by the pool. The food was good and the staff (particularly Gloria) was excellent. The sunset bar also has great cocktails but it does get crowded so go early!

CONS - truly, there weren't many. However, breakfast is a huge issue. It is WAY too crowded. We had to wait every day for a table and one day we were sent to the "overflow breakfast". Also, many of the food options aren't western, so while there's a huge spread of food we definitely were not eating sushi, noodles or cold meat for breakfast. If you can avoid going until very late in the morning i'd suggest it. The hotel needs to figure out another way to get everyone fed in the morning. It was mass choas in the Cafe...

This resort is very kid friendly and a great options for families. I probably wouldn't recommend it if you don't have kids but if you do it is sure to be a hit! Aside from breakfast and a generally crowded feeling some days at the resort we had a great stay!

First time staying here with my family of 5 (three kids below ages of 10) for 5D4N. Words fail to describe how much we have enjoyed the Resort. We have used almost all facilities available to hotel guests. Kids (of course) loved the pool and 3 slides (there were helpful staff manning the slides to prevent overcrowding or injuries). The Kids Club was fantastic with friendly staff while my wife and I were able to enjoy some quiet time. The restaurants were great (typical hotel prices), rooms spacious (we had an extra bed) & clean with Wifi hotel-wide. Perhaps the best seller was the Sunset Bar. Imagine this; having a beer, kids playing by the pool and you and your partner watching the sun set. Beautiful. All in all, we look forward to our next return here. Arguably one of the best resorts in this region.
