Have recently returned after a week at STAR.
The staff were wonderful, welcoming and accommodating. The facilities were beautiful with lovely well cared for grounds and rec facilities. With shuttle bus to town and cheap eats 10 min walk away, was a great location. The only negative would have been the bed was a tad harder than ours but in comparison to some I have had in other areas of Asia, it was reasonable.

The Hotel Shangri-La Tanjung Aru is a large sprawling hotel in beautiful tropical gardens overlooking the South China Sea. I stayed there as part of a work convention but with plenty of free time to enjoy the facilities and get to see a little of Sabah.

Firstly to get the negatives out of the way, there is not much within walking distance of the hotel. Kota Kinabalu is about a 20 minute taxi ride away. Also drinks and food in the hotel bars and restaurants are pricey for what they are.

But the hotel has plenty to recommend it. The swimming pool and man-made beach areas were all spotlessly clean. I had no problems with my room which overlooked the ocean and had a spacious balcony with two chairs, a table and an airer to dry costumes, towels etc. Was nice to sit with a glass of cold white wine watching the sun sink over the horizon. The staff were, on the whole, very friendly and helpful.

Adjacent to the hotel is a place where you can book trips; hire snorkelling or dive gear and catch a speed boat to the neighbouring islands. This part of the world isn't a touristy as many parts of Asia which means you can wander around the town without constantly getting hassled to buy stuff, which I find a pain.

Overall at the end of my week long stay I was sad to be leaving. I'd definitely like to return.

This hotel really is one of the best hotels I have ever stayed in! Superb service - with the greeting and sitting in reception with a glass of ice tea while the receptionist checked my in was great. Open space, rooms with amazing sea views. Best breakfast I have ever had in a hotel. I didn't eat in the restaurants but room service was tremendous.
Lovely to see there were travel agents on site so excursions could be booked the day before.
Al in all - an amazing experience!

Have just returned from a three week holiday at the
Shangri-la Tangung Ru Resort Sabah. The hotel was 1st Class we actually upgraded to the Kinabalu Club wing for an extra £30.00 per day per room 150 Ringit the upgrade is worth every penny, you get peace and quiet in this wing fresh fruit daily, excellent maid service and most of all the staff in the club room are tremendous Linda, Beatrice, Olen and the managers name who eludes me right now, were always greeting you with a smile Every morning we ate in the club room and the breakfast menu had plenty to offer, tea and cakes in the afternoon were scummy too.
Between 5.00pm - 7.00pm it was happy hour where we met some great people where we had the odd double Gin and Tonic always served with a lovely smile. The restaurants at the hotel were very good but drinks were a little to expensive taking into account that the exchange rate against the pound was not in our favour as we were only getting 5 ringit to the pound and drinks tended to be around the 25ringit mark also beware of the 10% service charge and 5% local tax.
We ventured into Kota Kinabalu on several occasions and can strongly recommend that you visit Jotheys Banana Leaf restaurant fine Southern Indian Cuisine for as little £8.00 per head all served on a banana Leaf in fact we ate their 3 times and also had a cooking lesson on how to make their flat bread. There are many restaurants in KK so do a bit of homework and go onto the Sabah Tourist board website for more details, the only negative comment i have the hotel they does not advertise or offer any information leaflets on any restaurant outside the hotel, this is mainly because there dont seem to be any hygiene laws on eating establishments so they are reluctant to recommend anywhere.
We will be definatly returning to the Shangri-la sometime in the near future and strongly recommend it over other hotels in that area. Ken & Pauline Jersey Channel Islands

We have just returned from a three week tour of Malaysia as part of our honeymoon and we were lucky to spend 5 perfect days at this hotel. I would find it difficult to fault this hotel. We were lucky enough to have a suite in the Kinabalu wing and the room was great. the whole hotel was spotless and the added touches like the evening room scents, papers, fruit bowls and packet of tea upon leaving really added to the stay. Because we were on honeymoon they also decorated our room with flowers and we were presented with a cake.

For dinner we tried all the resturants but kept coming back to Peppino's. We loved the food and atmosphere of the restaurant and have struggled to find an italian this good in London. Yes the prices are higher than you would find in town but you are staying in a luxury resort and therefore it is expected. If you want to eat out you can go into town but you will be so relaxed you wont want to move.

The spa is amazing, you must book a treatment there it is worth every penny.

We visted Rasa Ria hotel to visit the orangatan sancutary which is a must do. When booking this part of our trip we could not decide between the Rasa Ria and the Tanjung Aru, i am glad we made the choice we did, as the Rasa Ria is much more busy and is full of children. If you have children it would be the better choice but for a couple who want a few days relaxation then chose the Tanjung Aru.

Finally it is worth paying for the horizon club lounge. It is such a nice place to sit and enjoy the day. It is also great between 5- 7 when the drinks and snacks are free.

this was our 2nd stay at tanjung aru. this stay we requested a kinabalu deluxe sea view suite but upon arrival were told it was very busy and only a suite in tanjung wing available/ the suite however was amazing.
we ate most nights in cafe tatu as we had paid the value vacation rate which included breakfast, dinner buffet in tatu and all laundry and free watersports. cafe tatu food is fresh and the stir fries lovely although i was a little tired of asian cuisine by the end of the week.
new years eve a tad disappointing, had to pre book but i didnt feel for the extra money they had not put on enough entertainment.
coco joes was mostly much poorer service. we waited 20 minutes one lunch just for someone to take our order and another 20 minutes a drink to arrive, food was often left to go cold waiting for staff to get it out to tables. for a busy 5* resort i did think they should have more staff available, the poor waiters were dealing with tables and poolside orders.
part of our deal also included being able to have breakfast in the club lounges and free wine early evenings there but reception didnt really inform us of this so check your deal carefully before arrival.
we visited rasa ria during our stay, the beach is certainly beautiful and the sea with huge waves to play in great fun.
we probably wont visit tanjung aru again but did enjoy our stay, especially the luxury of the suite which was really gorgeous.

We are at present at Shangri-La's Tanjung Aru. We spent Christmas and New Year Eve. Here are our comments:

Reception: friendly, helpfull... some do not speak English!
Room: nice, spacious, clean with a nice patio and sea view (Tanjung Wing)
Beach: approx. 20 metres... do not go to Tanjung Aru for the Beach!!!
Pool: Big, clean and full of children playing...
Restaurants: Shang Palace (Chinese) good food, good and friendly service - Cafe' Tatu: good food, good and friendly service - Coco's Joe: good food... unfortunately unfriendly staff - Peppino: do not lose your time, food is average, waiting time is very long, service average and far too expensive for what you get.
Spa: very luxury with very experienced and friendly therapists (Allfy is the best of the best!).
Excursions: do not go to river cruise...

So in general a nice place if you are travelling with children. Definitely not the place to go if you look for good food, relaxing atmosphere and all the typical Malaysian care.
