“Good hotel, great value”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 April 2008

This was the first hotel we stayed at during a 2.5 week trip to Borneo. We had booked a sea view room online and were upgraded to a club room on arrival, this meant that we had access to the club lounge where we could take breakfast and had free internet access all day plus drinks and canapés from 5-7pm. Complimentary softdrinks were available all day.

The hotel is a typical 4 star hotel aimed at business men but with a good helping of families as well. It has a gym, several restaurants and a pool area. The pool area is adequate, it could do with some cosmetic improvements but has comfortable loungers and a decent sized pool.

Our room was large and comfortable with a separate walk in shower. All rooms have a balcony. 2 small bottles of complimentary water are left in the room each day.

Staff were all friendly and efficient.

The hotel is very good value. We paid 54 pounds sterling including breakfast and taxes.

We stayed at the Hyatt in Kota Kinabalu over the Chinese New Year period. The quality of the room was quite good but only to be expected given the cost of the room. The balcony overloooking the sea was the highlight. We went for the deluxe option which gave us these views. The hotel itself was a little tired, the food ok if overpriced as one would expect. Hyatt had a good bar attached to it and was very well located close to shopping centres, the sea and various bars.

The views from the ocean side are superb. Downtown is seedy (typical old style Asian area) and very smelly - large rats seen frequently outside, breeding under the sidewalks.
The Hyatt is ok - the buffet is excellent. They charge western prices for Asian cost and quality, unfortunately, and while I stayed there about six times, and the room was always good, the building is quite old and the many layers of paint show it.

Kota Kinabalu is old and is gradually being improved - but the sewer smells are always with us and the food is difficult. There's nothing to do at night, other than visit the resorts and see what they have going or drink beer in a few of the bars. Malaysia is against sin of any kind, so while cigarettes are dirt cheap, alcohol tends to be costly. The Hyatt is definitely not inexpensive, and while the quality is ok and the security is good, the building is so old that it shows.

  • Liked — clean, food good
  • Disliked — price was out of line and the building is old

We had a good time staying at the Hyatt Regency. Its good value. Where can you find a Hyatt at below $100?

As expected, service was great. Everything we asked for was given with a smile.

People at the reception and club lounge are very kind and accommodating.

Breakfast was good enough.

We were upgraded to a Seaview room overlooking a nice view of the ocean and the nearby islands.

Rooms need some refurbishing but it is clean. Had 3 nights of good sleep.

Great Value, Great Service.

We moved to the Hyatt from the Jesselton and found the Hyatt excellent. We had a room with a great view over the South China sea. Close to all the attractions of the markets and sights of Kota Kinabalu, Good sized attractive pool (a necessity!) and the staff were marvellous. We left our coats after climbing Kinabalu and they mailed them to the UK free of charge. To us, independant middle aged travellers who like a bit of comfort now and again, we couldn't go past the Hyatt. We felt it was so much better being in the middle of town and close to the waterfront attractions rather than being isolated in a resort compound out of town. Kota Kinabalu was a colourful exotic place to visit, great markets and food and although the Hyatt is due to have rooms updated it was still smart and luxerious.

Stayed at the Hyatt as part of Malaysian airline stopover. Its very central which is great for going and doing things but not if you want a romantic spot as its right midst bustling streets and overlooking the harbour. They are doing renovations so ask for a quiet harbour side view (less traffic) The breakfast is fabulous, so much choice. We had a few problems with the rooms and staff were really helpful. Towels got changed twice a day. We were invited to attend the hostess reception which was nice up on the top floor watching the sunset.
