An easy 20-30 min ride from the airport, this hotel is by the sea, 3 min walk from the evening food market where you can choose the fish and seafood you want and have it cooked the way you want to experience KK life at its best with the locals. If you want to eat up market, then the hotel's Chinese restaurant serves a wife range of some very interesting dishes (try sea asparagus, a kind of seafood). The rooms are well appointed, modern, excellent shower and dreamy quality of bed and sheets - a good night's sleep guaranteed. The breakfast has a wide choice to serve different palates.

This Hyatt is a Regency rather than Grand Hyatt standard. It is tired on the outside but reasonable inside. The pool is basic but adequate with sun lounges and cabanas and magazines available for browsing. Rooms are on the large side, some with open bathrooms (toilet and shower have doors but vanity area is open) and some have regular bathrooms that close off properly. The hotel is designed such that some rooms are outward facing and some face inwards to the atrium. These interior rooms have a sliding door and Juliet balcony, but on the downside lack both view and privacy unless you keep the curtains closed. They are also swathed in an odd yellow light from the atrium. Rooms are a reasonable standard and generally well maintained, although a lick of paint to cover over scuff marks on the walls would not go astray. TV Channels in English are limited (4). Housekeeping was a bit variable. Most days we had to ring for towels and shower products as they were never replenished - very unusual for a 5* hotel. This was my main gripe. If you are a Hyatt regular you will probably find the service lacking somewhat compared to other outlets. This one seemed to lack the personal recognition or service I have been accustomed to elsewhere with Hyatt. Not saying anything was bad, it was just middle of the road in this respect.

The hotel is well located for an easy walk to restaurants, Jessleton Point boat harbour, Wisma Sabah mall and the central markets.

Room Tip: Ask for an outward facing room, not an atrium facing room.

Hyatt Regency locates in a good place in Kota Kinabalu. I stayed there for 3 nights. The hotel is a bit old for it was built decades of years ago. The breakfast is nice as well as the intreseting interior decoration of the hotel. It takes about 15-20 min to walk from Hyatt to the city center which is queit small .

Room Tip: You can choose a room facing the see in advance.

I stayed one night in early October, after having spent 4 weeks in the Meridian hotel down the street during August.

Overall, I think that the Hyatt is a better choice than the Meridian. This Hyatt was built in 1977, but it has been recently renovated and it is extremely clean and well maintained.

There is a delightful club floor (Regency Club) on the top floor of the hotel, they offer a really good breakfast buffet. Internet service (Wi-Fi) is very fast and trouble-free, although the Ethernet cable in my room was not long enough to reach the middle of the desk where I put my computer.

A couple of respectful suggestions for hotel management:

1) For goodness sake, get rid of that 'home-office' quality inkjet printer in the Regency Club and buy an office-quality Hewlett Packard laser printer. It is a real PITA for guests to have to go and find an obscure driver for a specialized inkjet printer and install that driver. Long term, a proper laser printer designed for office use would cost you less than that inkjet printer does - not to mention making the whole printing process a lot faster and a lot more trouble-free for guests.

2) I note that your hotel attracts a considerable number of tourists from Mainland China. These folks are not always a good mix with business travelers who are looking for a nice quiet environment, free from wild and uncontrolled children screaming in the hallways, large family groups hollering at each other in the hallways at 2 AM, elderly people coughing, hawking, and spitting in the hallways, etc. I suggest you set aside one or two floors for 'single business travelers' (of all ethnicities), and try and keep the group tours and vacationers off these 'business floors'.

Room Tip: Rooms on the lower floors suffer from traffic noise - the building does not have good sound insulati...

Dear solotravellerCanada,

First of all, we really appreciate you taking the time to write such a helpful review of your stay here at Hyatt Regency Kinabalu. The renovated rooms and our Regency Club have gotten glowing feedback and we are so happy that you are pleased with both those facilities and services provided.

Your suggestions for a newer, upgraded printer and designated floors for group and business travelers are very helpful we would like to reassure you that we discuss them at our next meeting. Our guests’ satisfaction is of utmost importance to us and we thank you very much indeed for your feedback.

For your information, we will also be embarking on a new project which will see our Atrium, Tanjung Ria Café and lobby transform into a more modern space and experience by early 2015.

We look forward to welcoming you back to the Hyatt soon!

Sincerely,
Julia Chan

Spent a night at the Hyatt Regency Kinabalu in late September while on work in Kota Kinabalu. A last moment trip and only reason for staying at Hyatt was because the Hotel I usually stay in, Le Meridien, was fully booked.

The Lobby and entrance are very dated. Upon check-in, I found the greeting at the reception to be very cold and aloof. The room was fairly large, renovated and comfortable. The rooms were actually better than those at Le Meridien.

I ate at the Lobby Coffee Shop and also at the Chinese Restaurant. Both were very average in service and quality but the pricing was very high. Breakfast was very mediocre and not enjoyable.

On future trips to KK, I will look for alternate accommodations.

We checked in to a sea view room and it was very nice after a couple of days in the jungle. The view was fantastic. However, in the middle of the first night we woke up by a water leak - cold water dropped down and after a short while the bed and other parts of the room were completely wet. We rang the reception. Nothing happened. Then I went down to the reception and after about 15 minutes we could change room to another one - they placed us in a less nice one (fair enough in the middle of the night and they maybe did not have anything free). However they never suggsted any compensation and next day we had to go and say that it was not acceptable and then finally we could move again to a 3rd room. We were very surprised that they did not in any way showed a sign of compensation. It did not have to be a suite room but could only have been a fruit basket on the table. Anyway, the hotel was nice and it was overall a good experience except from the water leak...
Good location in the city.

We arrived at Hyatt Regency Kinabalu at about 9:30pm after our Mt Kinabalu climb. The check-in went pretty smoothly. The front desk mentioned that we had by default booked for twin bedders and they were glad to help us change it to King. There were internet in the room as well and that was totally welcome since we had no chance to check our emails in the two days that we were up on the mountain. We were given our room cards all within 10 minutes.

We checked into our room, freshened up, then book for our massage the next day, and finally, dinner for the night.

Overall, the décor of the hotel was nothing to crow about. The carpet along the corridor looked due for replacement and the hotel in general needs a bit of sprucing up. Once we opened the door to the room though, I was not complaining as it was newly renovated and the room consisted of a small living area with two single sofa and a coffee table. They even had a work table. The wash, bath and toilet area were pretty well contained. There were wooden sliding doors that helped to separate the sleeping and the washing area.
