All the boxes are ticked by this very pleasant and functional hotel but it is not cheap and is part of a big chain so really that is minimum you would expect. I give it 4 out of 5 only because at check in I was upgraded to a sea view room and club access which was the type of gesture that merits an extra one on the scale.
Indeed the sea view would almost have been worth the extra cash as it is a grand vista helped by the large balcony attached to the room.
TV was old and choice of channels rather limited but otherwise good 4 star hotel quality in the room.
Buffet breakfast was decent and the Chinese restaurant a nice place for lunch.
Do not though use the tour desk - they charge 50% more than you can get at one of the agents located just the other side of the shopping centre just by the side - the money changers there also have excellent rates.
Final criticism was the lack of free internet - I detest being charged for internet in this day and age. If you need a surfing fix there are plenty of places with free wi-fi nearby.

We arrived at this hotel after an adventure week and we needed to some comfort and chill time.

Check in procedure was efficient and smooth.
The rooms are large with all necessary comforts. Excellent bathrooms and very effective aircon.
All the staff are fantastic, nothing was too much trouble and all staff members work hard to make the guest comfortable. Any problem was solved by personal attention with no fuss. Their service was amongst the best I have ever received and was made even better by the genuine care the staff showed me.
The breakfast buffet is very international with an excellent selection of food. The bread selection was extremely good. The main restaurant serves all sorts of standard fare to a very good standard at reasonable prices. The Chinese Restaurant was excellent, although more expensive, and the table service was amongst the best I have ever received. Drinks are at hotel prices but not too excessive.
The health spa is free to residents but treatments are charged for. The spa and gym is well equipped and looked after by attentive staff. The sauna helped me to have a very restful time.
Check out was smooth and I thought the bill represented excellent value for money.

The rooms are a little tired and need refitting but as this work is in progress I will not let this detract from an excellent stay. The building work should not put anybody of staying in this hotel as it is being carried out very unobtrusively and apart from some scaffolding it is not noticeable.

Just returned from this hotel where we stayed for a few days. We had a wonderful time. as mentioned previously the hotel is being renovated at the moment but I must say you woudl eb unaware of this unless told. there was certainly no inconveninece or noise from the renovation.

We also had large room , Ocean facing , which whilst a little tired decor wise was certainly spotlessly clean and well maintained. Niceties like turn - down and extra bathroom amenities were a nice surprise.

Pool area was great, generally not very usy and servicea round this area could not be faulted. All in all the service at this hotel was excellent. The staff were all warm and welcoming and really could not do enough for us.

Location of the hotel was great, next to a shopping mall for when we were sick of swimming. 15 minutes by boat from the local islands where you can snorkel and dive.

I woudl definately recommend this hotel

Room was large and well maintained. They are renovating the entire hotel, even though my hotel room doesn't seem like it needs renovation - that's a good sign. Our ocean-facing room was noisy from the busy street below. Service is excellent. Restaurants are quite good. A nice hotel. A 10 minute walk to the ferry terminal with boats to the islands of Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park Very good value if you don't mind the noise.

During our Tour-of-Asia in July 2009 we had 2 nights / 3 days at the Hyatt Regency Kinabalu in Kota Kinabalu, the capital of Sabah, Malaysian Borneo. We had flown to this paradise City from Kuala Lumpur ( see also our review about the Nikko Hotel Kuala Lumpur and also our earlier review from the Novotel KL ) with Malaysia Airlines ( around 2 hours ) in comfort. After our arrival and getting through immigration and getting our luggage we bought a taxi voucher in the arrival hall at Kota Kinabalu International Airport for 20 MYR ( Ringit ) for the Hyatt which was only a 20 min. drive away in the City Center of KK as the locals call it, Folks! The hotel itself is an esteemed Landmark in the heart of the city with many possibilities for shopping and sightseeing direct on the door-step literally! The Wisma Merdeka Shopping Mall with hundreds of shops is next door and the South China Sea is before the Hyatt! Fantastic! The hotel has two wings one smaller tower facing direct the sea over the swimming pool and one larger higher tower ( 14 floors ) having been built behind it with even more stunning overall views to enjoy! The Check-In was fast and efficient plus friendliness was always the order of the day for us! Within minutes we had been to our room no. 425 on the 4th floor of the smaller sea-facing tower incl. Club Lounge access which was temporarily on the 2nd floor ( normally on the 13th floor of the hotel ), this was due to massive renovation taking place in the hotel without any disruption or noise to report! We had also superb sea-views all the way we could see for kilometers on end! Our room was furnished in a more english then malay style with colonial style furniture in whites and we had a large king-size bed, balcony ( balconies by the way will be in-cooperated into the rooms thanks to the renovation taking place giving more space in the room but with no balconies anymore in the future! ) Our television was old-style ( but this will also change thanks to the renovation process to a large LCD 37inch TV ) from Sharp with CNN, Bloomberg, ESPN, STAR TV and local channels on offer. We also had a safe ( who had a mind on its own! ) plus welcomed free water ( which was replenished each day! Superb, Folks! ). We had seen by invitation the new room as a mock-up on the fifth floor which looked stunning and was fantastic proportioned and furnished plus offered all the new textures and technology of a superb five star hotel of the future with the typical Hyatt touch of flair we all so love and enjoy! We also would like to take the opportunity to say a big Thank You to Miss Enjine who showed us around for two hours in the new room of the future at the Hyatt which should be available from early 2010 to book at Hyatt.com and we would like also say a big Thank You to Mr. Jens Busch, the Manager for Rooms at the Hyatt Regency Kinabalu for his patience for the many questions he had to answer during our session of Q&A at the Hyatt Regency Club Lounge! Thanks, Jens also for the brochure which has by now joined our brochure collection of fine hotels from around the world from our travels. Warmest Greetings from Dublin, the capital of Ireland to the Hyatt Regency Kinabalu in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia! All the success with the NEW HYATT! after the renovation is 100% completed and hopefully we have the best of fortunes to experience the Hyatt again in her new outfit in the future! Coming back to our stay again we should also note the very very friendly service we received from Eileen in the Club Lounge and her friendly manner and chat. Thanks to you as well! Despite we stayed in a non-renovated room yet we enjoyed our stay tremendously and the bathroom was also large and nice ( in the future the bathtubs will be replaced with smart large showers instead in the new rooms of the Hyatt! ). The style of the hotel overall was malay with international touches here and there plus a Spa was on offer incl. Outdoor swimming pool and fitness center and Restaurants incl. breakfast ( which included all the international favourites of a international hotel such as Hyatt ) was served in the Tan Jung Ria Restaurant located in the superb large Atrium, Delicatessen shop, Western, Chinese, Malay, Pub, Japanese, modern cuisine at Mosaic ( here we had enjoyed incl. a gourmet Mumbai pizza and penne with meat balls plus complimentary local Calamasi juice ( through our welcome voucher we had received on check-in ) and water ) and 24h room-service ( through the roomservice we had incl. Spaghetti Bolongnaise, french toast - which was 1A! by the way! ) on offer. The Regency Club Lounge despite being temporary relocated to the 2nd floor was very nice indeed and offered free internet access plus printing and we had evening receptions incl. japanese food, cheese plate, Wine from Chile, desserts, Ginger ale, water, OJ, Stella Artois beer - this offerings changing each day to a certain degree as well plus newspapers and a large TV with CNN on the wall! The new future Regency Club Lounge will be permanently located on the 13th floor of the higher tower with stunning views and will be totally renovated to an ultra-modern degree with the Hyatt touch included, Folks! Kota Kinabalu itself is a very pleasant City to visit anytime, despite being July 2009 which meant rainy season, we had no rain at all here during our time - only a small shower on first night! Not much, though! The Location is directly opposite from the South China Sea and Shopping Central with thousands of shops in malls and markets within easy walking distance from the hotel. We also had taken a taxi with Mr. Asif to see the Menara Tun Mustapha building which is named after the most remarkable and revered former governor of Sabah state and is today the highest building in Sabah state and the second highest building in the whole of Borneo. The building is also a sign of respect and the future for the people of Sabah and Borneo because it is home to a foundation who helps disadvantaged local people to receive a proper education and a future which they can actually build a foundation for a better life! Fantastic to know and to visit, Folks! The Tun Mustapha was around 20 min. outside of the City with commanding views and location clearly visible from afar when approaching. We also had taken on the same trip a stroll toward the Kota Kinabalu City Mosque which lies on the same way as the Tun Mustapha, a real must see all both of this beautiful stately Landmarks! The Trip had cost us 80 Ringit return to/from the Hyatt! A real photographic delight! Highly recommended also for time pressed people because all this could be done in 2 to 3 hours in the afternoon! Superb, Folks! So all in all we should be back at the Hyatt and the City of Kota Kinabalu, the capital of Sabah, Malaysia ( Borneo ) with many more things to see and many memories to store in our life! Thank You for reading our review and be inspired to travel to this beautiful part of the world and do not forget to FLY!STAY!EXPLORE! MORE! and be fascinated what can be done while on travel! Thanks again!

When I was booking a room at this hotel in March I was confident the name of Hyatt speaks for itself. Everything must be perfect. However 5 days prior to our arrival in Kota Kinabalu my wife was told by a friend of hers that her staying at the hotel was complete disappointment. When I check numerous negative reviews about the hotel I was stunned but it was too late to book another hotel. So we decided to try our luck and stay there.
Check-in was fast and smooth, staff was friendly. But when we entered the room our bad expectations materialized... a tired, smelly, old room. Not a pleasant impression. But it was just the beginning. Later on there was serious leakage in the room and my wife's new dress got damaged as she sat down on a chair.
Luckily the manager (a very nice and friendly lady) upgraded our room to business suite with all privileges attached to this room and my wife received compensation for the damaged dress.
On check-out a front desk clerk, I suspect intentionally, included charges for breakfasts, which were included, and amount, paid to us as the compensation for the dress, in the final bill. However after complains she gave us a revised bill.
Definitely the hotel needs renovation bad. It's underway now. Hope after the renovation is completed in 2010 the stay at the hotel would be good experience. For now think twice to book a room there.

As long time business travelers with points, we stayed at the Hyatt Regency Kinabalu rather than one of the more local hotels when we visited in June. The hotel sits in town just across the street from the waterfront. Sunset views from the hotel are wonderful!

Rooms
Beds were older and very hard. The hotel is in the middle of renovation, so not sure if this will be changed out soon. Temperature was a little difficult to control in the room, and it tended to get warm during the night. Rooms and Bathrooms were decent, but showing wear. Safes, hair dryers and ironing boards were provided in the room. Bottled water was provided and restocked in the evenings. In room coffee was ok, although like much of Asia it was instant. 2-3 kinds of tea were also available. In room internet was 54 MR / day. Breakfast was included in our room rate. On the morning we went to Sandakan, we ordered room service breakfast instead and that was included as well. By far, the highlight was the sunset view of the South China Sea.

Concierge Lounge
Regency club was closed for renovations during our stay.

Breakfast in the Restaurant
Buffet breakfast was nice. Juices, fruits, salads, meats, cereal and pastries were available on the buffet. There was a noodle station, an egg station, and an Indian station where you could have hot items prepared to order. Just a note --- bacon here is “beef bacon”. Tastes a little like beef jerky that has that fake smoke flavor. After my first encounter, I avoided it. Coffee was very strong! Service was good and friendly.

Transportation
We got a taxi from the airport. We went to the taxi counter when you exit customs, paid 20MR for a ticket which we gave the driver. Trip took about 10-15 minutes.
Taxis were readily available outside the hotel for anywhere else you wanted to go.

Area
There are lots of big malls, little restaurants, pubs, 7-11, drugstores, bookstores, etc. within walking distance. You should be able to find what you want fairly easily without paying hotel prices. There are several clubs in the area, so the streets are busy – even in the evenings.

Laundry
One note on having laundry done. As expected, the Hyatt was a little pricy (11-13MR / item for shorts & tees). There are several laundry places within 2 blocks of the Hyatt. They will do laundry for 4-5 MR / Kilo --- however, it’s not same day service. If you drop of this morning before 10 ish, it will be back tomorrow afternoon. This was because all of these places were drop points and the laundry was sent out to be done. If you have the time, it would be a great option.

Service
Overall, service was very good. What this place lacked in room comfort, it tried very hard to make up for in service. Everyone you saw spoke to you and was very friendly. We were always greeted with a smile. English was VERY common in the hotel. Front desk staff was very efficient and knew us by name from the day we checked in. Housekeeping was great, and kept us stocked with bottled water. Room was serviced twice a day. Concierge desk staff was helpful, but wasn’t always available. The front desk was able to help whenever the concierge wasn’t available.

Pool
The Hyatt pool is on a deck above street level. It’s very relaxing. It’s difficult to find a shady spot in the afternoon. Pool is relatively deep, but there is a separate shallow area for kids. Poolside beverages were good, but VERY strong.

Hotel was a good choice for the location and price.. It’s very much at the center of the shopping area, and easy to get to other areas of the city. Only downside – it’s waterfront location makes it susceptible to waterfront smells at times. I’d definitely go back when in the area!
