“Not 4 star - 2 star would be more fitting!”
Reviewed 25 January 2011

The hotel star rating in Sabah compared to the world seems to be different. In my opinion this hotel should be only rated 2 star if compared to any other hotel elsewhere.

Check-In
--------------
Upon checking in, they will provide only 1 key card. The keycard comes with a reminder note about the number of towel they provide and how they will charge you if anyone of the towel goes missing. So much for hospitality.

You again later reminded everywhere in the room about missing towel and charges. The towels are not that great to begin with if anyone likes to steal them.

We we told that breakfast coupon will be send to the room. Didn't happen. I had to request from the front desk the next day. Not an issue, wish they kept their word.

Room
----------
We had the Superior room and paid RM 200++. The room was quite small and to our horror, the furniture seem so antic. They still use CRT TV which the audio was out of sync for certain channel. The hotel seem to have limited non-smoking room, but thankfully our room didn't stank of cigarette smell.

The pillow was the worst, it was not fluffy and was quite flat. The bedsheet had stains. The lighting in the room is poor where by it's only brighten by the bedside lamp.

The toilet has seen better days. There was a rusting at one part of the bath tub and you had to stand in the bath tub to shower. However the shower head is placed quite low which is not convenient to shower especially if you are taller than 5'. Toilet flush was not working properly but we made do. Toilet does not come with bidet, minus point for those who uses water. Hot shower was a problem on the first day, the 2nd and 3rd day it was OK.

Service
---------------
Service was generally OK. I made several calls and was attended although there was 2 occasions that i had to call twice. The duty manager was suppose to come and reset the safety box. My wife was downstairs while I was waiting outside of the room. My wife told me the duty manager was just doing nothing until I made the second call.

We call to request a new towel, the guy showed up at the door empty handed. We gave our used towel and waited about 10 or so minutes before he showed up with the new ones. Didn't we call specifically requesting a new towel?

We had a sink clogged and maintenance guy showed up and got it fixed. Thumbs up for engineering dept.

I asked the concierge to book a taxi to the airport a day earlier. They had a funny smirk while saying "yes we will book". As suspected, they didn't do anything. Taxi was just waved in from the outside on the next day.

Food
---------------
Buffet starts at 6.30 am till 10pm. Should extend longer. Food was generally OK, however food tends to finish fast and refill is a bit slow. Service at this area is sporadic. Some waiter are good and they act fast and some just ignore you.

There is a pastry corner which was recommended by someone. We wanted to buy a cake until we saw a fly was sitting on a cake. We complained to the person in charge and they were trying to shoo off the fly however didn't remove the cake the fly was on. God knows how long it was there and I saw people were buying some cakes after we left.

Parking
---------------
I don't understand why hotel guest needs to pay parking RM 2 per entry. There is a 45 minutes limit free parking just in front of the hotel, but the guard there sometimes get annoyed if we were to park few times there in a day. Makes no sense. This hotel has no sense of hospitality.

Surrounding
------------------
This hotel is next to Centre Point Sabah and WaterFront. There is tons of shops right behind the hotel and Ocean Seafood restaurant is next as well. The location wise is good, but I don't think it's a big plus point as you will still need some form of transportation to get around anyway.

This hotel is generally full because a lot of government staff uses this hotel for functions and etc. No idea why the government loves this hotel.

Looking from the reviews I assume if you take the more expensive rooms like the promenade floor or junior suite, you will have better experience. My personal thought, I will never step into this hotel again.

What a piece of crap!
Forget the fact no one helped us bring our bags in when we arrived at 12:30 with no other guests in sight, or that none of the 3 doormen standing around opened a door for us, or that 1 of them even tried to beat me through a door rather then hold it, OR that the non-smoking floor smelled of smoke.
The shower provided NO HOT WATER, what a piece of crap.
Now , continental breakfast is not usually my favourite to start with, but at least at most hotels the pastries are not rock hard & the cheese(processed) does not come melted to the inside of of the plastic wrap it is still in! Trying to put this all out of your mind with a drink won't help either, I am sure they 'cigar' bar cut their Bacardi with metholated spirits or worse judging by the taste. DO NOT STAY HERE!!!
By the way we are staying in the PROMENADE DELUXE SUITE!

.I had to request another room, after having been shown to my first one, which stank of cigarette smoke, felt damp, and had green mould growing on the walls by the windows. I was moved to the Executive level...no cigarett smoke, unless you had the air con on, and then you could smell it. When it rained the windows leaked, and water ran down the walls ......and there was green mould on the walls. The wiring also left a lot to be desired.
However, the Executive lounge was lovely, and the service they supplied was excellent. The lobby is pristine and very welcoming...its just the rooms which are dreadful.

We stayed on two occasions at the Promenade Hotel - no choice as this was part of a package to climb Mt Kinabalu. On the first stay there was only luke warm water (which we just put up with as we thought it was normal - until we spoke with others in the hotel and found out it wasn't) and were put into a smoking room (we are non-smokers) as they claimed there were no non-smoking rooms available. It was horrible and led to us having sore throats in the morning from having to breathe in the stench. The key to the room didn't work and we took 3 trips back to reception to get that sorted out - they finally had to send someone up with us with a master key to reset the lock. At this point this was annoying but we were patient about it.

Problems really started on our return stay after Mt Kinabalu. We were given a room where we noticed a few ants on the TV. However, pulling down the bed sheets, it was filled with ants. My husband meanwhile was trying to have a shower and now there was absolutely no hot water at all (keep in mind that we were exhausted and wanted nothing more than to shower and sleep and the time was around 2100 when we checked in). We called down to switch rooms. This took them 45 min to sort out and 3 phone calls from us. When we finally got a new room they came with the key but no porter to help us with out bags.

Got to the new room and the key didn't work. Once again, 3 trips down and finally someone with a master key came. They started telling us that the key chip memories were full or something like that and we just said that as paying customers they just need to fix this as the same issue had occurred for 3 different rooms. Finally got into the new room at 2300 and were now fully exhausted. BUT still no hot water in this room - at least no ants though! Called back down and maintenance came to fix the problem - seemed to be an issue with the boiler. By 2330 we had some hot water. Quick showers and into bed to sleep. Then the phone rang at 0030! It was the duty manager who we had tried to contact at 2200!! Couldn't believe they rang at that time!

Woke up at 0800 to get ready for our flight home and guess what - no hot water at all. The boiler for the floor had broken down again. The suggestion made to us was to pack our things and move rooms for a shower. We couldn't believe it. Instead, just had cold showers and left. Not happy.

If you are thinking of staying here, please know that for similar prices the Le Meridien is down the street and much better quality. This hotel has a nice looking lobby but everything else is absolutely terrible and not worth the money. We felt ripped off and angry when we left as there was no attempt on the morning duty managers part to help us. We will never stay here again.

stayed there last week with family. Had read the other reviews and wanted to try out as mentioned value for money and good location. I had logged on to their website and managed to get their promotional offer of only $100 malaysian ringgit. From check in til check-out, we had a great time. The staffs were very helpful and friendly. Barvo to them!!Even the maids greeted us along the corridors. Room was clean and comfortable. As we were at the town centre, the shopping complexes were just a few minutes walk away. The breakfast was fantastic! Admittedly there was no safebox in our room so we made use of the safe box at the lobby. Great stay, we will definitely be returning!

It's the most terrible hotel i ever stay. the toilet bowl didnt provide us hose (water) as we asean ppl need to wash after the 'business'. the day im checking out, the front desk told me that im stealing away the towel..cant there be other more polite word rather than stealing..i was shocked!! after she double checked it again. at the end they dont charge us. beside that, the hotel charging us high price for internet usage and yet very slow (cant connect at all) compare to others hotel in the same town..

There is no in-room safe and it seems the management allows the room cleaners to take whatever they find in the room without consequence. If you don't want the room cleaner looking through luggage and personal belongings for cash then don't stay at this hotel. The lobby looks very nice but don't be fooled, this is not a 4 star hotel. If you do stay here, do not leave any cash in your room.

If anyone else has had cash stolen while staying in this hotel, please contact me. I have reason to believe that my case is not an isolated incident.
