Sutera Harbour Resort (The Pacific Sutera & The Magellan Sutera)
Ranked #8 of 92 Hotels in Kota Kinabalu
Reviewed 16 May 2012

This is one of two resort hotels in KK, and in my view better than the Shangri-La's Tanjung Aru Resort Hotel as it is newer, less crowded and more seclusive. Tangung Aru Resort have in my view became a victim of its own success, crowded pool and beach, kids running around in lobby and pool area. Sutera Harbour Resort is quieter and less crowded, thus a perfect place for relaxaton. I was offered and upgraded to a Junior Suite when turning up with my family without a pre-booking. The suite was obviously of luxury standard, and my kids thoroughtly enjoyed the experience. The pool was fantantics and there was section for the kids all to themselves. The breakfast and buffet lunch at the coffee shop were average (when compared to internatonal standard), but above average or even good when compared to local standard. Pricey, and its location may not be ideal unless self drive, but definitely would recommend.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for choosing to stay in Sutera Harbour Resort. We are happy to know that you and your family enjoyed your holiday and we greatly appreciate your support in reommending our hotel as the preferred place to stay in Kota Kinabalu.

The hotel is located near the city and self drive is one of the options to explore the city. However, we also recommend you to use our shutlle service that brings guests to town and back every hour. The shuttle bus drops guests at strategic points near shopping malls which makes it easy for them to get around town.

We look forward to your return trip and once again thank you for your nice compliments and posting them on trip advisor.

Best regards

I can't put into words how much I loved this hotel. It was perfect from start to finish. The check in is quick and luxurious. You're served free drinks as soon as you arrive. The rooms are modern and clean. The view is breath-taking. Magellan Sutera is the place to stay if you ever travel to kota kinabalu. Also I should add there is no other place in Malaysia like kota kinabalu, it was absolutely fabulous. It's a small happening city with a very beautiful beach. As for the hotel the breakfast is grand. You are served everything and anything imaginable. The hotel restaurants are located next to the beach and have the most amazing sunsets views. The harbour is one of its kind. Boats from the harbour take you to islands all day long. Its a hotel for families and for people seeking a relaxing vacation. The only complain I have is the bathroom. The bathroom really lacks privacy and is made for couples specially. There is a thin wooden piece covering the bathroom window from the room. So anyone in the room can clearly hear and see whats going in the bathroom which isn't always the best thing when you're staying with someone you're not romantically involved with. But overall it's amazing. I would 100% recommend it to everyone. Staying at the Sutera Harbour will certainty enhance your trip since its very centrally located and is a very lively resort .The Magellan Sutera def lives up to its reviews. I cannot wait to go back.

Room Tip: choose the pool view rooms they are right next to the lobby

Stayed at the Magellan Sutera. The resort is extremely large and impressive. So large, in fact, that I got blisters from walking to daily functions at the Sutera Harbour Wing and to the Fitness Centre at the Pacific Sutera. The shuttle between the sections of the hotel is very useful.

The pool, I normally used, was the olympic size 12 lane one between the Magellan Sutera and the Pacific Sutera. Everything, except perhaps the service upkeep of some of the rooms in which my friends stayed, (e,g, door locks often did not work), was of an exceptional standard.

A bit far from downtown, if you intend to go there. But at a resort of this standard you have everyting at hand.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for staying at the Magellan Sutera Resort and giving us your feedback on your recent stay with us.

Sutera Harbour Resort is indeed a huge complex covering 384 acres and we highly recommend our guests to use the shuttle bus unless they prefer to walk. We are sorry to hear that you had blisters on your feet from walking from one property to another. The best solution would have been to get the assistance of the Concierge who will call for the shuttle bus anytime you require. This would have avoided the blisters on your feet.

The Resort is not far from the city and there is a shuttle bus that takes guests to the city daily starting from 8.05am and last pick-up from the city is 9.30pm for a nominal fee of RM3.00 (two-way) which is much cheaper than taking a taxi.

On your next trip to Kota Kinabalu, we will be happy to furnish you on the schedule on our shuttle services well in advance.

We greatly appreciate your feedback & we look forward to welcome you back to Sutera Harbour Resort.

Best regards

I booked an ocean view club room at the Pacific Sutera and when I arrived, the room wasn't ready and they were unsure of when the previous guest would vacate. They offered me a temporary room which I wasn't happy with (being very tired from delayed flight) so the manager upgraded me to a junior suite which was FANTASTIC!!

I departed for 1 night to climb Mt Kinabalu summit and on return they had upgraded me again to a deluxe suite which had ocean view's from every room - highly recommended!

I was so impressed with the way that they handled the situation and made sure that on my return to the resort I was treated like royalty.

The Sutera Harbour is perfect for a stay in Kota Kinabalu because you can mix resort life with daily city trips to the seafood bbq and to experience Sabah life.

I will definitely go back!

Room Tip: Junior Suite or Deluxe Suite, club floors are higher and quieter

I have just returned from 3 fantastic nights at the Magellan Sutera, using it as a base for a relaxing weekend break.

The hotel itself is part of the larger Sutera complex, and the Magellan seems to be the pick of the bunch! Set in between the golf courses and the sea, the views around the hotel are incredible. Only 10 mins away from Kota Kinabalu airport, and five minutes from town, the location is fantastic. The standard room we stayed in was great - nothing spectacular and showing a little wear and tear, but that is being very picky. The place is huge, but the design still allows some uniqueness and a feeling that you aren't part of the masses. The pool is idyllic, and many a sunny hour was spent lazing on the sunloungers surrounding it. The beach is purely there to say "we have a beach", and if sand and sea are a crucial part of your hotel experience then it is best to find another resort a bit further away. Walking throught the grounds is lovely, especially at sunset. The food we tried was all good hotel food, especially the Italian restaurant by the pool. The buffet breakfast was top notch, and filled you up until the sun set and it was time to hit the town. All in all, could not recommend this place more for a base in Kota Kinabalu!

We stayed 4 days & extended our stay for another night.
The room & it's view is simply superb. We stayed at the sea-view rooms.
My only disappointment was the breakfast. Kimchi? Miso soup? really?
The only local choices you get is Paratha (roti canai) & Nasi Lemak. It was alright, but i feel that hotels need to play the role in promoting local delicacies. How about Ngiu Chap? Roti Kahwin?
For tourists to try such local delicacies at the stalls & restaurants would be hard, as they would be most concerned about it's hygiene & safety. What more for those who aren't that adventurous?
If the hotel serves it, they would most likely to sample it, as they would feel it's safer & professionally prepared.
You can't bank it on room service alone. Not everyone orders in, & if they do, it would be the safe choice that they would go for. Complimentary breakfast would grab more percentage, compared.
Otherwise, everything was excellent for my wife & i. We're foodies, so, food is always our concern.

Rating notes: I couldn't rate value as 5, as our stay was a treat by our auntie from Sabah Tourism. As for Sleep Quality, there was a wedding by the pool on our second night that lasted until past midnight & they we're very noisy. I supposed they were drunk. We didn't have the time for Spa so it's not fair for me to rate it.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for choosing to stay with us and posting your review on trip advisor. Your feedback on our breakfast items has been noted. As we are an international hotel, our breakfast buffet generally consists of local and international dishes to suit all tastes. The hotel is popular with Korean & Japanese guests, hence we have a section on the buffet breakfast to cater to their palate. No doubt Nasi Lemak and Roti Canai or Paratha are daily favourite breakfast dishes of the Malaysians and in most hotels, it is a must have on the buffet.

Usually, Roti Khawin goes well with local coffee and as a 5-star hotel, we do not serve local coffee like in the cofffee shops. However, your recommendation of breakfast items is interesting and we value your feedback on this. We will certainly look into it when we next change our breakfast menu.

We are delighted that you had an enjoyable stay with us and we look forward to welcome you back to Sutera Harbour Resort. It was a pleasure to have you here with us.

Thank you & regards
