Sutera Harbour Resort (The Pacific Sutera & The Magellan Sutera)

Stayed here for three nights for work. Nice place in terms of location, setting, facilities and service (especially the concierge).

However, it was the little little things that affected the stay. I'm not sure how much is beyond the control of the hotel. Check in took almost 45 min. When I got to my room, someone was already in the room so had to go back down and get another room! The TV worked fine for the first hour and then the sound malfunctions. I brushed up my Malay by reading subtitles to the James Bond movie! The hotel is located close to the airport and the windows are not sound proof, so the sounds of flights taking off and landing kept me awake or woke me up. There was an incentive group and they used an outdoor facility with loud music till midnight two of the nights I was there.

Stayed at the Magellan over the easter break. Lovely hotel, staff really friendly. Tiny beach infront of hotel but the pool was really nice. We had been upgraded when we got there from a Deluxe sea view room to a Club room which was absolutely beautiful. The largest hotel room we have ever stayed in. We booked are rooms through asiarooms.com. We walked over to the Pacific Sutera and thought we had made the right decision to stay at the Magellan it seemed to be the better of the two. A really lovely place to stay, couldn't fault it.

Me and my partner stayed here for 10 nights it was a fabulous experience, we stayed at the Pacific Sutera it was awesome everyone was so friendly..

Shuttle buses into town were FREE they came every hour so you always can get in and out...if you don't want the shuttle take the taxi you can usually get them down to $10 ringgit...

We went on the river tour it was amazing saw buffalo and saw the way the malaysians live on the river...

Also went to the Shang-Ri-La Tangung Aru to see the Orangutangs they are beautiful animals all this was booked through our concierge he was fabulous and we had a car take us all the way and then even wait for us..I think for 3 of us it was $200 ringit...

The people at the pool bar were amazing always willing to help and there happy hour from 2-4pm is great..get to know the barman and you won't regret it, I am from Aus and my partner bought some Bundaberg Rum duty free and we had drunk half the bottle and mentioned it to the barman and he offered us free drinks for the rest of our stay if we give him the rest of the bottle let me tell you that was worth while...

The facilities are amazing we went over to Sapi Island where we went parasailing, snorkelling etc they also have a bowling alley with 10 lanes and tennis courts, the brekkie, lunch and dinner is awesome...

There is also a great little Italian Restaurant in the middle of town when we were there was run by an Australian man...it was great food but if you are an avid shopper its not great for clothes etc but for little nik nak items such as souvenirs it is wonderful and the markets are excellent you feel quite safe, also you should visit the irish pub on the water...

We (my wife and I) travelled around the world (USA, Canada, England (London), France (Paris), Italy (Rome), Thailand (Bangkok and Krabi)) between Jul-Sep 2007 and earlier, had vacationed in Hawaii. In sum, Malaysian resorts such as Magellan / Pacific Sutera and Shangr-La Rasa Ria offer by far the best value for money of any hotel / resort in any of the aforementioned countries. This review is of the Magellan Sutera. My cousin stayed at the Pacific Sutera at the same time, and it was just as nice.

The Sutera Harbour resort includes the two hotels Magellan Sutera and Pacific Sutera, separated by a club and marina or mini-harbour (can book water sports, cruises). The two hotels each have a swimming pool, Pacific with a swim-up bar, and the club an Olympic sized pool (50m). The Olympic pool allows lap swimming in lanes.

Breakfast was extraordinary - there's no other way to describe it. A variety of cereals, fruit, white / brown / sweet / sour bread / toast, pastries, jams, marmalade, eggs any-which-way made fresh, roti kanai (savoury pancakes) made on the spot, sausages, beef bacon..and the list goes on! Hot tea or coffee is brought to your table in a flask. All on a table covered in a white table cloth with steel cutlery and chinaware. And you enjoy breakfast whilst looking out over the South China Sea. They even provide special feed in a bird trough to keep the sparrows from sharing your breakfast!

We dined both in the hotel and in town. Hotel dining is a bit dearer than in town, but the setting and ambience is better. We enjoyed the considerable talent of The Charades, a Phillipino trio that harmonised beautifully and seemed to be able to perform any song thrown at them!

The staff are all smiles, yet unobtrusive. They never fail to wish you the time of day. The service is both friendly and excellent. In fact we found Malaysian people in general to be very friendly and helpful.

I would recommend Malaysia and the Magellan and/or Pacific Sutera to anyone who wants a relaxing vacation and good value for money on every front. And don't miss the orang-utans at rasa Ria!

This was an excellent resort hotel with many amenities including lagoon pools, beach access, water sports, and golf course. The room was large and well appointed with marble bath, separate tub and shower, etc.

The hotel provides shuttle transport within the resort and into town for free. There are many restaurants and a nice buffett breakfast was included in the $84 nightly rate for the Pacifica Hotel.

Take the bus to Kinabalu National Park and climb the mountain for a change of atmosphere. For diving, ask the concierge to contact (Aalbs sp?).

Enjoy Borneo!

My Wife and I stayed at the Magellan Sutera Hotel for 5 nights at the end of Jan .It is part of a large resort complex which incldes 2 other sister hotels. The food in the buffet resturant was very good and varied plus helpful staff. At this hotel in the complex there is only a small beach ,but it has an excelent pool area and surrounding sea facing areas to sit .The only drawback here was the loud music from speakers around the area .The management are misguided in thinking guests want to listen to this noise when trying to relax and read or doze in the sun.Anyway there is a pleasant walk along the seafront around the marina area to the other hotels in the complex. The hotel does have a free regular shuttle bus to various shopping malls in town.
