“5 star hotel, but not 5 star mattress”
Reviewed 21 March 2013

Everything was perfect: beautiful sunsets, dinner by seaside, friendly staff, swimming pools.. totally enjoyed the facilities. Hotel and room are in tip top condition except for the bed. Found out this when we woke up in the morning with back-ache. Realising the bed has sunken a bit (spring has worn out perhaps?), we informed to the front desk. The housekeeping staff came and tried to rectify the mattress but could not; so they decided to move us to a new room. Bed in new room is not as bad, but not in good shape too. Anyway, couldn't blame the staff; even the front desk manager came to apologise and offered assistance to carry our luggage to the new room. Perhaps its time for the hotel replace the aging mattresses.

Room Tip: Pacific Sutera has the entire building air-conditioned, whereas the Magellan Sutera has open air lob...

If you're a golf tourist, then Sabah (Malaysian Borneo) should be on your must-go list. Only 10 minutes from Kota Kinabalu airport, the Sutera Harbour Resort is ideally located alongside the Sutera Harbour and overlooking the South China Sea.
We stayed at the Pacific Sutera, which I believe is the older of the two hotels. My impressions were that the Pacific was more suited to singles and business travellers whilst the Magellan was best for families.
We were asked to choose between a smoking and non-smoking room. Having chosen non-smoking, we were dissapointed upon arrival at the room as the smell of cigarette smoke had infiltrated the carpets and soft furnishings. However the room was otherwise clean and offered the facilities one expects with a modern resort. The absence of in-room Wi-Fi was a small let-down however it is available in the lobby.
The reception and concierge staff should be commended for the welcoming smiles and personalised service. The concierge assisted us with outside golf reservations and travel arrangements and provided valuable tips and hints.
The dining options at the Pacific were a little limited, however guests can use the neighbouring facilities without any complication. A special mention should be made of the Silk Garden restaurant. We ate there on several occasions and were very impressed with the quality of the cuisine and service. Having said this, it is only a short cab ride into the KK city centre and we would recommend eating out at the Waterside deck area where a wide variety of foods were available.
As for the golf, the Sutera Harbour Golf Club offers three different nines all designed by renowned course architect Graham Marsh. Quite typical of a resort style course, the average golfer can navigate the many hazards without too much difficulty and leave with their golfing dignity intact. The addition of floodlights to the course and the ability to play golf into the late evening is a real novelty and perfect for those looking for ways to beat the humidity. The course was in good condition and the greens were quite slow by most opinions.
After golf, there is a spa within the hotel, but those looking for a golfers tonic or deep tissue massage will be dissapointed as it focused mostly on relaxation and similar "softer" techniques.
As an Australian tourist, I would have to say that Sabah remains "under the radar" but I believe it has tremendous appeal to those Aussies wishing to escape the Bali crowd or who have "seen and done" Thailand. Overall we enjoyed our stay at the Pacific Sutera and would have no reservations in recommending this resort to others.

Room Tip: Try for a room overlooking the South China Sea.

I stayed for two nights and found the dining choice very limited. Apart from the 24 hour coffee shop, which I had my breakfast, there is a bar at the pool, and a Chinese restaurant. I would have to take the hotel shuttle (RM3) in search of more food venues in town. The pool faces a narrow strech of beach and is of a decent size. But occasional gasoline smell from the yachts nearby spoilt it slightly.

We could not have picked a more perfect Resort for our stay in Sabah Borneo. It really is just as advertised - 5 star and perfect in very way. We chose the 'Pacific' Sutera Hotel and after checking out the Magellan decided that for us this was the right choice. It somehow had a more homely feel and the staff were more welcoming - overall it had a much nicer feel than the 'Magellan' - for us. Overall this resort offered good value for money - our Aussie dollars went quite a long way. The room was beautiful with views to die for over the pool and grounds and right out over the South China sea and the Islands - beautiful sunsets every night and great views of the tropical storm clouds that rolled in every so often (see pic). Swimming pool was large and never crowded even though it was school holidays. No WiFi in room but I used the hotel Business Lounge Internet free of charge for max half hour each day to catch up on emails and that was fine. The gym was small but well equipped and never busy. The food was excellent with a breakfast buffet to die for! You could eat anything from all over the world here - the German Head Chef knows his stuff - the omelettes cooked while you wait were just great! We also dined at lunch time couple of times and that was also good. On our last night we treated ourselves to Peking Duck at the Silk Garden - and wow! It was cooked and served to perfection - highly recommended and not expensive by Aussie standards - it would cost 200% more in Australia. The Hotel has a shuttle bus to take guests into the main town area of Kotah Binabalu for a small fee of RM3. This proved to be a joy for us as we loved the night markets and waterside restaurant area in town and went there nearly every night to eat in the markets with the locals - esp Nasi Goreng for about $3AUD. The Hotel Tour desk was good and organised a couple of very good trips for us - all done efficiently and without fuss. All in all if you want a great relaxing holiday in absolute luxury with genuine authentic Sabah culture at your doorstep - stay here - we will go back absolutely! Do it - you will not be sorry!

Room Tip: Ask for an Ocean view room.

We have just got back from a 11 night stay at the Pacific Sutera Habour Hotel. The hotel is well stiuated with some fanastic views of the Islands. The staff are helpful and friendly especially the concierge Mr Sabri who helped us with organising our trips, giving advice and generally being very helpful and friendly. The room was large, comfortable bed, large bathroom with both bath and shower. The breakfast was good, we also ate in the Spice Island resturant in the Country Club Hotel (highly recommend the Beef Rendang) and Al Fresco in The Magellan Sutera, as these 2 hotels are all part of the resort you can use all the facilities in either. There is also a city shuttle bus which runs every hour into KK for 3RM, a Marina at the back of the hotel where you can get a boat over to the islands. Attached to the Pacific hotel is a sports bar called Jugs, they have all sports showing on 6 screens, darts and pool and amazingly the beer and coctails worked out cheaper than in town because of the buy one get one free happy hour which is from 5 till 11 and bar staff again are really friendly and provide free snacks. We really enjoyed our stay and would highly recommend it.

Room Tip: Choice of smoking or non smoking floors.

Beautiful setting right next to the water front with magnificent views from the hotel. The rooms are very well appointed with all the comforts of home too. There are many activities that kept us busy - water sports (try parasailing - it was a great experience for my son!) or relax in the Mandara Spa with the 'muscle-ease' massages!
Had an excellent meal in the alfresco restaurant by the water - ayam percik, nasi goreng and other Malaysian delights, but also decent pizza and a succulent burger that we enjoyed too.

We stayed in Pacific Sutera for 2 nights. Very good & nice hotel. Friendly & helpful staff. The room is clean, with a nice view, clean & big bathroom. It will be better if there's free Wifi in the hotel, only LAN. Easy to go to town with hotel shuttle bus even we have to paid for RM3 per person.

But for the restaurant staff, not sure if she's a supervisor, will be appreciated if you can fulfilled my request before you attended to your colleagues for other issues cos I'm stood there for quite a while and you don't even apologize to kept me waited.
