“Lovely place, great location, but smoking allowed everywhere”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 August 2008

We stayed here for four nights in a standard room. The room had a beautiful view over the bay and pool which made watching sunset a pure joy.

The room was clean-ish (there were some old stains on the bed covers and on the carpet but nothing which really fazed us) and a good size.

The BREAKFAST IS AMAZING!!!!!!!!!! I've never seen such an incredible variety. We would go back just for the buffet every morning. There was Korean, Japanese, Malaysian, English, pretty much everything you could think of. It was just a shame we got food poisioning from a trip to the markets so that we couldn't enjoy the buffet every day we were there.

The big downs to this place:

- the Airconditioning is set to suspended animation in the lobby and restaurants. We had to carry jumpers despite it being 40 degrees outside

- the wine collection isn't worth mentioning except that the $60 bottle we bought had turned sour (but no one would believe us). I'd recommend BYO'ing

- you can smoke EVERYWHERE. Lobby, restaurants, by the pool. Difficult if you come from a country where smoking is a pass time no longer acceptable in public places

Do remember to bring clothes to cover up in though. Remember that there is a large Muslim population and walking around the main town in short shorts and skimpy top will draw looks. They are too polite to say anything but it will remove the glances.

On arriving to The Pacific Suera, having pre paid for family room and breakfast with a British web flights company. Taken to the room to find 1 super king size bed. No beds for my two children. I was informed by reception there would be a bed charge of RM215 per bed per night or we could hire another room. I have never heard of this extra charge before! It certainly wasnt mentioned when booking. The Hotel is expensive for all drinks including water. Sterile attmophere would not recommend.

We have just arrived home after 6 nights at Sutera Harbour Pacific Hotel. This is a fantastic Hotel; the staff are so friendly, everything is very clean, the food was wonderful. We booked a junior suite and it was well worth the extra cost, for the added space and the complimentary drinks at sunset (thank you Esther!)
We took the tour to Sepilok Orang Utan Rehab Centre and took the Colonial Tour in the afternoon. Loved it all. We also went out to Manakan Island for the snorkeling and beach BBQ. I recommend this tour highly. We were very well looked after with water, soft drinks, and loads of food not just BBQ. Make sure you take a waterproof camera as the fish are very friendly and the water is very clear- you'll get good shots!
We both felt quite sad to be leaving Sabah and have made a pledge to return next year.

Booked this hotel on the recommendation of Trip Advisor. It was better than we expected. Staff were courteous, rooms were great. Restaurants excellent standard especially Spice Island. Wouldn't stay anywhere else

We stayed in the Magellan Sutera ocean view wing. We had a large door that led onto a small balcony that looked over the ocean & out to sea . Every evening I sat on the balcony & watched the sun go down. What fabulous sunsets & sights from that. The staff of this hotel were the best we have ever met in any hotel we have stayed in.
They have 4 pools a marina, cinema, and a golf course too. The Pacific Sutera is a totally separate hotel & is older than the Magellan Part. They have a kids club plus a free shuttle bus into the town of Kota Kinabalu. There is also many parts of the hotel where you get a great view of Mount Kinabalu. Whoops forgot to mention the great buffet breakfasts at Magellan & the buffet dinners at Pacific Sutera.

Hi!!

We stayed at this hotel for 14 nights and absolutely loved it!

I'll start off by talking about the pools- one of the best highlights!
When we arrivied we saw the pool and almost died! The main pool is sooo huge with water falls and gorgeous aqua blue waters. We mainly stayed around that pool un till we found out that there were 3 other pools that we didn't know about! Pool one was a lagoon pool which had 2 waterslides, pool two was just a lap pool and pool three was another wonderful pool with a water fall. They were outstanding pools and we just adored them!

Rooms: Our 2 bedroom deluxe suite was great.. very clean and spacious! The rooms looked out over the pool and the ocean.

Check in/ out: The service was really good. Our check in was smooth and we didn't seem to have any problems.

Facilities: The facilities were good. There is a great gym, tennis courts and spa.

Facilities out of the hotel: In Malaysia there is great shopping really cheap as well! We caught a shuttle bus from the hotel which took us to an AMAZING shopping centre. Also a must see is taking a shuttle bus to book a tour to go and see the orangutans. There are many rain forests in Sabah that take to on tours of the rain forests. It is a must see and do- the experience was amazing!

Over all the hotel was great and it is a wonderful place for a family holiday!

We've just come back from our week long stay at the Magellan and I felt compelled to write a review. It's a shame that a few people have not had a good experience with the front reception desk and although I admit their comprehension levels were not great I do accept that English is not their first language and as I have lived in a number of countries are probably more tolerant of this aspect.

PROS: better overall value than the Shangri La's we've stayed at in KK (got given vouchers upon check in for use in the various restos/bars plus free transfers to a neighbouring island).

Fantastic facilities, the best of any resort I've stayed at in terms of variety, having the bowling alley for example just superb.
Great quality of food / choice of restaurants
Generally helpful and accommodating staff
Fantastic for kids - gotta disagree with the reviewer who bagged it for toddlers - we have a toddler (3 years old) and although he is TINY he did not fit through the balcony bars and the pool was absolutely perfect for him (the shallowest being the one outside the Little Magellan kids club - exclusively for the use of guests staying at the Magellan not for the Pacific).
Kids club/Babysitting couldn't fault it
Large enough rooms to accommodation an extra single for our child.
Free shuttle bus into town (although it was always fully booked so we got a cab only costing MYR10 each way)
Location - 10 mins from airport so great when travelling with little ones
Frequent Internal shuttle bus which was an airconditioned coach
Considering the size of the resort it really wasn't that big a deal getting around it - we took a stroller for our toddler which helped and I would recommend it if your toddler gets tired but to be honest we also liked him to run around so he'd sleep well!!
Check in and check out all very smooth and easy (unlike when I stayed at Shangri La, kept waiting forever to check in and the check out bill after I checked it needed amending 3 times before they got it right, they overcharged us on a number of things) - so on the day I check out I always get a print out from reception in the morning to check over so I can make sure it's ok and it's always a nice experience when they get it right first time!

CONS
Front reception staff not always 'helpful' because of lack of comprehension - had a couple of minor things re babysitting and getting the extra bed delivered to our room to sort out but we found it was easier to deal with them face to face than over the phone.
Having said that our son was ill and needed medical attention from a doctor during our stay and on a sunday night after speaking to front desk a doctor (very nice friendly indian guy who spoke excellent english and had spent time in Australia) arrived within 10 minutes - we were very impressed.
Our king size bed was a little hard
Spa - disappointing massage - have received spa treatments and massages all over the world and this was the worst we'd had I'm afraid!
Staff not quite so attentive to kids as staff at the Shangri La but every single person from gardners to maintenance staff that we passed by had a greeting and a smile.
I'm a very particular person, have high levels of expectations and have travelled extensively staying at 5, 6 star resorts as well as roughing it before kids occasionally at 3 or 4 star places. I would not hesitate to return to this resort.
