Sutera Harbour Resort (The Pacific Sutera & The Magellan Sutera)

We were very impressed by this resort & especially the staff who bent over backwards to make our stay memorable. We stayed in a deluxe seaview room which was spacious and had a balcony & cool bathroom. It was easy to get to the islands as the marina was part of the resort. All the rates for boat trips were the same regardless of which tour operator you went with. We went to Manukan Island for snorkeling & had everything a visitor would want eg, cafe, snorkel hire, public showers & sit down public toilets( not squat toilets !!). We also went to Sapi island which was a beautiful place to swim.Sapi also had a cafe & shady trees to sit under. The weather at Kota Kinabalu was perfect, a consistent 28 degrees, not too hot.The people were reserved & friendly & unlike other tourist destinations we didn't get hassled once by locals trying to sell us something.

I booked my package thru Dragon Air/CX Holidays for The Pacific Sutera about a month before the trip. Arrived without any issues but had a bit of misunderstandings during check-in. First of all, I booked a Sea View Room with a non-guaranteed balcony request but on their record it wasn't. No worry as I have my receipt and everything was clearly printed. Then they say I'm only staying for 2 nights and it should be 3 nights... Anyway, they said that I have to wait about an hour as we arrived during the peak of checkout and the room wasn't ready yet. OK, we sat around the lobby and took a few photos and within 20 mins our Sea View Room with a balcony was ready. Cool... we anxiously walked up to our room which is a bit of a walk from the elevators... and both key cards couldn't open the door... I had to go all the way back for a recode and sort out the extra night & breakfast... Anyway... the room was quite nice, facing the swimming pool and the balcony is a plus. We had a wonderful 3 nights stay there...

Nice staff, nice place... breakfast was good... the view and the waves were very soothing... The shuttle bus to and from town was a plus...

Magellan Sutera Hotel is less than 10 minutes from the KK airport Terminal 2 (Air Asia) and costs RM20 by taxi. The resort covers about 380 acres and also houses the Pacific Sutera Harbour Resort, a golf resort of 27 holes and the Sutera Harbour Marina. All these facilities are available to guests at both the Magellan and the Pacific Sutera.

Our arrival was about 10.00am in the morning and we didn't expect to be able to check-in immediately however we were pleasantly surprised when we discovered our room was available. This certainly enhanced our stay and allowed us to unpack and be investigating all the Resort had to offer way before lunchtime. Our room was lovely and appeared to have been recently painted. Furnishings were traditional in style and the bathroom housed a separate large shower as well as a bath big enough for two. Only negative comment here would be that a second wash basin would be nice. There was the usual mini-bar, electronic safe and tea / coffee making facilities. The rooms at the Magellan also have a nice wooden balcony which the rooms at the Pacific Sutera lack.

The gardens and pool areas are lovely and fresh white towels already laid out on the sunbeds. Extra towels are readily available at the activity kiosk. Staff are allways nearby to assist with umberellas and beds should you require help. Restaurant staff are also there and occassionally handed out cold towels and fresh fruit on sticks to the guests relaxing by the pool as well as attending to any other refreshments you may want.

A short walk past the Marina takes you to the Pacific Sutera which also had a lovely pool area however we chose to stay at our own hotel during our stay and did not use any of the facilities there. Signing for any purchases in bars / restaurants at any of the outlets in the whole resort is available and saves the need for carrying money around. Prices however are rather higher than in town. For example a 330ml can of Tiger Beer was RM22 plus tax and service charge in one of the restaurants. In the town a bucket with 4 similar sized bottles costs only RM35. Food too is expensive in the resort and half the price in town.

Getting to town is very easy and only takes about 10 minutes. We used the courtesy bus on one occassion but found a taxi to be much easier and it only cost RM10 each way. The bus is free and runs on the hour every hour until late but stops at various locations and takes longer than the taxi.

This was our second trip to KK and the Magellan is highly recommended and the best Hotel in KK. This is however is reflected in their prices.

My husband and I stayed at the Magellan Sutera for eleven days in January. We had read on Trip Advisor that the standard rooms were small, so we booked a sea view room in the Magellan Club. This was a great idea because it afforded more comfort and privacy and we were treated like royalty by Elvis and his staff.

Everything was wonderful - the food, the view, the service, the location - we'd certainly recommend this hotel to anyone.

Our only complaint was that my husband kept ordering toast with his freshly cooked breakfast and this only arrived once. The staff speak English, however, the nuances of the language can be lost on them and perhaps toast is not something they're familiar with.

Our very special treat on the last night was dinner at Ferdinands. Rodney, the maitre d' treated us like dignitaries. Every aspect of the meal and service exceeded our expectations - especially as we left the restaurant when all the staff lined up at the door and Rodney presented us with a small gift box of chocolates each. Now we know how the Queen must feel!

By the end of our stay we were so relaxed we didn't want to leave.

The Magellan is a magnificent hotel supported by some of the most helpful staff I have encountered.

We were travelling from Australia with two boys (14YO and 8YO), and needed adjoining rooms. No problems at check in and out room was excellently kept throughout the stay.

The rooms are very comfortable, however they can be a bit noisy if there are party goers out in the corridors - but this only happened once.

The pool is the centre of attention - and pool staff are second to none. The lifeguards are excellent at making kids feel at home and provide a bit of local knowledge if you ask. Concierge is also very helpful.

The marina is very handy, and facilities at the Maggellan resort, the golf club and Pacific Harbour are available to guests. We had excellent meals, excellent service, excellent advice and comfortable stay. I must say that when we got into Kuala Lumpur we were a bit depressed to be leaving Magellen and KK.

We stayed at the Sutera Harbour for 10 days in all with a short break when we climbed Mount kinabalu. We found the rooms comfortable, especially the beds, and the rooms pleasantly designed. We had a lovely view over the harbour. The staff were very pleasant and we didn't have any of the problems some people have mentioned.
The hotel was very busy and there was pressure on sunbeds but we always managed to get them if we went to the lap pool which we were happy to do. Our teenage sons were kept busy with the billiards room and bowling, plus the town is within easy reach.
The food in all the restaurants was of a high standard, we particularly enjoyed Ferdinands where the staff really spoilt us.
All in all a very pleasant time was had at the Sutera.
If I had any moans it would be plates tended to be cleared while other family members were still eating. I really don't like this but I have noticed it happens a lot in Asia. I also felt that although the food at the New Year gala dinner was wonderful, the entertainment was poor and it felt like a long time until midnight.

My husband and I stayed at the Magellan Sutera in July 2008 and stayed for a total of 5 nights.

First room we were allocated was a little shabby with stains on the carpet etc. but after speaking with reception, an alternative room was allocated, although it did take a while to get our luggage.

Food was pretty good with a wide international selection for breakfast and plenty of places to select for an evening meal - a must is the italian in the Magellan. It is a little pricey with smart attire only but well worth a visit!

The concierge was first class - organised private transport for us to see the proboscis monkeys/fire flies on a river cruise, at very short notice

During our stay, we also spent a day with a private guide on a nearby island, walking the nature trails through the mangroves and snorkelling and a visit to the Shangri La orangutan rehablitation centre.

We didn't spend too much time in the hotel but when we did the pool service was great - especially the cocktails as the sunset over the south china sea.

This is a great base and very convenient for both downtown and airport!
