“Lovely!”
Reviewed 31 March 2010

My husband and I stayed here a couple of years ago and we loved it. We were fortunate enough to come across a really excellent deal online for a club room. The staff that work in the club lounge/restaurant are amazing! They make every guest feel very welcomed and special. The hotel is great for young families and it is just a beautiful hotel to laze around by the pool and dine at the great restaurants. I would recommed this hotel to young couples, young families and older couples. Its just a lovely place to stay!

- F&B prices a little above average. Double check the prices on the menu and what you're been charged for. Asked for a Club Sandwich from Room Service. 38MYR according to in-room menu. Charged for 42MYR. At check-out informed the receptionist and got a "I will check" reply. Nothing was done to correct the issue or the charge.
- Pool Bar had no coconut at 1pm on a Sunday. Waiter says: "We have cocktails available". Premium prices of course. Hint: look around and see coconuts in every single tree. A Coke at the pool: 13.80MYR (including taxes). A Coke from the minibar costs 8MYR, so different prices everywhere. The best part: fries with cockroach for my kids. The waiter very quietly removed the serving and went away coming back 15mins later with a new serving. He never said a word.
- Breakfast is poor. Not much variety and if you seat at the varanda area, don't expect happy faces to serve you. Ask for coffee. Fruits: watermelon, melon and pineapple. No cheese available. No orange juice.
- Rooms: a 21st century TV would be welcome. Difficult to shower if water temperature keeps changing at will. Hot and cold and hot and cold. no matter what mix setting you choose.
The pluses: beautiful location, spotless facilities and rooms, shuttle bus to/from city.
Stayed at the Magellan in 2006 and it was a 9 out of 10 experience.
Pacific should be a 3 stars with this kind of service. 5 out of 10 experience.
Note to the management: I left a letter at the front desk 24hs before my check-out to have a chance to talk about it. Unfortunately you never showed your face.

Going to Borneo was a whole new experience for our family. We had never heard of the place before let a lone where it was but we still booked our flights. Sutera Harbour Resort is the top hotel I've ever stayed in. The people are so helpful and caring for you and the views are exquisite! The best holiday I had ever been on.

Pacific Sutera - more of a business hotel, Magellan is the resort style.
HOWEVER - full credit to the team in the pool bar "Waves" at the Pacific - what a great atmosphere - the Magellan was lacking the "fun time" .
Magellan has the rooms, the view, the resort pool - but definately lacking the fun atmosphere. Thanks to the guys at Waves - 2pm happy hour, we made the daily trip.
Sutera Harbour offers something for everyone - a great place to stay. It doesn't matter if you stay in the Pacific or the Magellan - you get to take advantage of ALL the facilities.
We will be back - for a fourth visit.

Stayed at Magellan Sutera for honeymoon. Great service by staff, great selection of food. Literally spent half the trip at the Waves Poolside Bar and Restaurant where the hospitality was unmatched. Friendly staff quickly became 'mates' and took care of every requirement. Drinks were well priced and expertly made. Food was a mix of authentic Malay flavor and Western influence.
One night NEEDS to be set aside from everyone's stay to experience the Poolside Barbeque - a huge selection of tastes with plentiful portions will leave your mouth watering with every bite. Great value for money and great entertainment spending the night with the enthusiastic staff. Tell them Joe sent you!

Few memorable areas:

1. Clear water by the dock with tropical fishes swimming just below your feet, unbelievable!
2. Great jogging path along the beach within the 2 hotels, amazingly ride!
3. Unforgettable sunset view from the beach or the hotel balcony, just a very wide views over the sea - beauty!

Ask for room with sea view and a balcony. Pacific Sutera is great but I think Magellan Sutera has another kind of style which is also great!

Distance to the city is less than 10 minutes but not necessary if you aren't aimed for locals food and stuffs.

We stayed at The Pacific Sutera for five nights and did enjoy of our stay although it was clear that The Magellan probably would been better suited for us. The Pacific is the older, original part of he resort and is, in my opinion, better suited for the business traveler than for the holiday guests. My and my partner were looking for a hotel with the sense of luxury but still reasonably priced. The lobby and the pool area were up to our expectations but the rooms were not. We got a room on 9th floor with a great view over the golf course, the mountains and also a bit of the bay with a local village on water. The room was quite spacious but had an old wall-to-wall carpet with some stains on, an old armchair again with stains on the fabric, old hard bed with pillows more resembling sandbags and an old cover that also, in closer scrutiny, had some stains. The bathroom had a nice interior and both a separate shower and bath tube, on the downside was the fact that you wouldn't get much privacy in there because above the bath tube section you had a opening to the room, just beside your bed, without a sheet of glass or anything else more sound isolating, but with an almost see through shutter. Since we both got stomach sick in turns some privacy in the bathroom would have been much needed. Not very romantic. In summary, the comfort of the room was not on the top. One more downsize was the daily (march) orchester practice that took place somewhere on the ground under our room between 3 and 5 pm and which we heard in to the room very easily. Not easy to rest in the noice, I can tell.

Both the Sutera and Magellan share the pool areas, which in total are 3, and were in my opinion really nice, big pools and nice gardening around. From the pool closest to Sutera you have the view over the ocean and in distance the Islands. There is a small stretch of beach also but, after reading all the warning signs I didn't feel tempted to take a swim in the ocean. Close to Sutera is also the resorts jetty with hourly departs for the islands. The snorkeling on the islands is amazing with tropical fish everywhere and real beaches. You get to the islands in 15 - 20 minutes.

The restaurants were nice, breakfast buffet likeways with a great choice of everything and the possibility to sit inside or outside. The hotel also offers a free shuttle service to Kota Kinabalu (which doesn't offer much to see).

All in all, if you don't care about the comfort of the rooms but want the feeling of a great city-close resort without paying too much I would recommend staying in Suteran. If you can afford, choose Magellan.
