Nexus Resort & Spa Karambunai
Ranked #10 of 92 Hotels in Kota Kinabalu
Reviewed 4 January 2012

We have been to the Nexus 4 times over four years and we keep coming back. We have found that it is the best place for a family vacation. We have children between the ages of 3 and 14, and we can do just about everything together. This is not to say that the resort does not have it's share of frustrations, but we've learned to live with them, and enjoy the good life.

PRO's -
>Gorgeous Grounds, with foliage and lights and waves and sea breeze. It's a beautiful spot.
>Lots of activities for the family. We can Batik Paint together, play soccer, play outdoor chess, go swimming, go bike riding (on tandem bikes, very fun) Ping-Pong, Tennis, Squash, The best thing is, it's always available. Unlike Club Med, when you can only do certain activities together as very restricted times. Here at the Nexus, it is all open, always.
>Fantastic beach, with great sand-castle making sand. Nice waves and surf too.
>Lagoon Beach! We love the chance to go waterskiing and knee-boarding, all 8 of us in the boat together. This is one of the main draws that keeps us coming back
>Spacious rooms. The connecting King/Double rooms is one of the biggest we've seen
>Seclusion - with 20 minutes from the nearest shopping, and 35 minutes from KK, you're away from it all.
>Borneo Spa - this is my wife's favorite spa in the world. The atmosphere is utterly relaxing, with their huge grecian pool and lounge in the waiting area, and the whirlpool/sauna facilities and massage selection. We infrequently spend the money for a hotel massage, but this is one place where we indulge.

CON's
>Rooms are dated, and the electronic light control doesn't work at all. We had to cover lights with towels at night, because we couldn't turn them off
>Breakfast service could be faster and more efficient. It is galling to wait in line for 30 minutes to be seated, and watch other people walk right in and sit down from the other entrance. They need more staff in the dining area in the morning.
>Nexie Club - the room is messy and needs a MAJOR facelift. The carpets are filthy and sticky, and smell in the room is bad. It has gotten worse every year. We hardly spent any time there this year.

Room Tip: Newer Villa rooms are available about a kilometer from the main hotel. We have toured them, and the...

We spent 2 nights over Christmas in this 5 star hotel by the beautiful beach.
Everything was excellent especially the food, sea view, mountain view and room where we stayed in.

Service was good although it was a very peak season, but the checking out was rather slow.
We enjoyed the serene and relaxing atmosphere with privacy.

The Resort is in a fantastic location, the design and how it is insert in to the nature is the best you can have in the area. Unfortunately the service is absolutely very very very poor. To have breakfast there is always line, when you complain ...they suggest to wake up earlier:-) When you ordered at La cart you need to wait almost 1 hour to have food and if you try to have a cocktail ....good luck. Is very sad because the Hotel is really beautifull.

The expanse of the hotel itself is captivating; foliage of greens, fresh air and panoramic stretch of the beach and the sea. The hotel is recommended for relaxation and escaping the hustle bustle of the city. It is far off from the city and everything else, which can make shopping a little more time consuming. If you plan to stay in, be prepared to just chuck in. The chinese restaurant Noble House is highly recommendable; so is the darling darling bar.

The pace and service is rather disappointing; check in and check out queue is tremendously long; food services is also rather slow, and buffet breakfast can be quite disorganised when the crowd is huge.

Stayed 2 days, 1 night, at the Villa with family... Worst service... Waited 2 hours to be
checked-in... Once we were checked-in and was about to settle in, the manager called
and told us we cannot stay in the Villa due to reason there were too many of us... I was furious
as we already told the hotel during booking the number of person going to stay at the Villa
and there was no problem during checking-in... What kind of a Hotel that checks you in
and then later tells you that you cannot stay in the hotel?! After reasoning with the manager,
she later told us to just stay in the Villa while they sort things out... After 3 or 4 hours of
arguing, we decided to just stay put in the Villa as it is really not our fault and proceeded
to go about with our plan to use the Hotel facilities and not spoil the day for the kids...
The buffet dinner is simply not worth the price... The food is not appetising... Some of the
3 star hotel in the City can do better than this Hotel... To make matters worse, no drinking
water was served with the buffet dinner... We had to basically buy mineral water...
My advise to travellers to avoid this resort.. There are several other resorts around that
can offer better service, better food, excellent view and competitve price than this resort...

Wanted a quiet place to relax and had booked the Ocean View facingRoom. But it turned out more stressful because of hotel poor customer service.
Over my short stay in 2 days, I faced the technical problems in the room.
1.Kettle not working,
2.Safe box not working
3.Telephone not working ( outgoing call ok but can't receive incoming call and subsequently line went dead)
4. The worst of all- room door cannot be locked on the second day. Spend more than 2 hrs waiting for hotel to respond and one person 's time was wasted instead of enjoying ourselves as a family at the pool or beach.
Note- hotel kettle and Safebox were malfunction and I was taught by hotel duty manager on how to press and hold the 'On' Button for kettle , and 'press' the safe box door tightly. Staff was rude to defend that nothing wrong and Fault bounced back to me for not able to operate it.
Report once again all unpleasant cases to duty manager in charge . Was asked to go to the main office to make an official report to the main Hotel Manager in charge. What a lousy service. I was there to relax as a guest and was told to go office to make an official report- What kind of hotel management is this?? All the above reported are facts and Hotel Manager was employed to sit in the office???? Have been to so many resort and Nexus hotel Manager sits in office like a Statute and guest must go personally to report! What 'superb service' guest is this?
I will never recommend this resort to anyone.
It is common to have technical problems in rooms even new hotels, it all boils down to hotel staff on how they respond and follow up on complaints. In this case here, Nexus respond is slow and has very bad customer service.
So potential guest there if you are assigned to this type of problematic room. Good luck to you. A good hotel with good staff will help but not this one!

Spa Villas
1. Room check-in delayed for 3 hrs. There are people who came on the dot at 2pm and was not granted a room after waiting for 3hrs.
2. Simple requests made 2 mths in advance not fulfilled at all. (eg. To have 2 units booked in advance side-by-side and extra beds for 2 kids)
3. Very late room service - starts at 9pm, ends at 10.00pm.
4. No TV manual. Highlighted to reception and was ignored twice. You have to search for the channels yourself. Surprisely, there's only 8 channels available. (1 Cantonese channel, 1 Korean channel, 2 Movie channels, 2 education channels-nat geo & discovery and 2 kids channels)
5. Chokage of drainage for bathrooms. The floor of the bathrooms is flooded with water after shower of 2 pax. It was only repaired on the last day of the 3-days stay.
6. Irregular shuttle bus schedule. You have to 'highlight' to the staffs passing by to remind their driver colleague that there's people waiting for the shuttle bus service.
7. Different advice from hotel staffs over same question.(eg. Availability of breakfast at pool villas/ spa villas area, time of breakfast available etc)
8. No power to electronic safe. It's there but you just can't use it.
9. No Internet access, contrary of what it claimed to have in the "fact sheet"
10. 4 adults staying in 1 unit but only offered 2 pairs of slipper.
11. A hotel that does not have an hotel information directory on room service dining menu, instruction manual on it's facilities eg. Tv, phone etc). They gave the phone number of the reception, room service but you just can't get through via the phone. Just imagine you have encountered an emergency and need help on immediate basis.
11. Only good thing about this place is the unobstructed sea view and the clean beach in front of the resort...
