We have just returned from a wonderful trip to Malaysian Borneo. We spent 8 nights at Nexus and enjoyed every moment of it. It is 40 minutes or so from Kota Kinabalu airport but within fairly easy access of most places if you hire a car/bike. The hotel has a regular daily bus service into town and/or 1 Borneo, which is a very nice new shopping mall.
On our late evening arrival we realised that we had mislaid our bag containing passports and other important bits and that it was probably still at the airport. The hotel staff were very quick to act and immediately contacted the airport and arranged for someone to check out the airport taxi stand (where we thought we had left it). They also very quickly arranged transport back to the airport for us. Thanks to their speedy response we were very fortunate to retrieve the bag within the hour.
All that aside the hotel is in a stunning setting, overlooking the South China Sea and the private beach is great for long sunset strolls. The grounds are immaculate aided by a beautiful golf course. The resort appears to be environmentally friendly, they even have a few resident monitor lizards living in the small lagoons as well as plenty of visiting birdlife. The rooms are very comfortable and clean. The staff in the main were very efficient and extremely helpful, although we did find that getting service around the pool bar could be a little slow at times, but overall we were extremely happy with the service we received. The happy hours are great because they rotate between three bar areas - which can give you 6 happy hours a day !!!! The food was very good too. In particular the chinese restaurant served very good nosh. All in all if I was to return to Kota Kinabalu I would not hesitate to stay there again.

The food is 2 -3 times more expensive than in the town at similar restaurants. Considering the prices and room rates you'd expect top notch rooms, restaurants and facilities - unfortunately it's a bit of a one-sided deal. The gym equipment is old and smelly, the rooms are outdated with mould stains, and worn furniture. The restaurants probably looked good in 1999 but don't now. The breakfast is average - but I've had better in 2 star hotels. Compared to the Shangri-La (Rasa Ria or Tanjung Aru) this place is second rate. The staff have an air of unhappiness about them even though they try their best to be friendly and happy for the guests. They charge for absolutely everything in this resort - games of pool, squash, PC use (even though the leisure room is about 15 years old or looks it), batik painting, napkin folding ! (wow that's so exciting, not). Surprised they don't charge for the toilets. The portions in the restaurants are tiny considering the price - as are the cocktails. The place is overmanicured and boring - no interesting events like traditional dancing. If I were you I'd stay at the Shangri-la or a city hotel like the excellent Jesselton or Le Merdien. Location's nice though.

The Nexus resorts has the most courteous staff i have seen. The location and the view of the hillock from the rooms is sensational. The ponds in the hotel with monitor lizards gave that touch of wilderness along with the safety of the long private beach.

We have just returned back from the Nexus after our 6th visit since 2001. You could say we were fans.. But...........
Everything that made this Hotel special, stand out, with charming qualities and attentive staff that made you feel welcome - has gone. Everything that justified it being so expensive has gone.

Its still a beautiful standard hotel, very clean, well kept picture perfect gardens, its ideal remote location miles from the city and fantastic private beach ideal for stressed couples is still there. But its lost it charm. Lost everything that made it special and worth those many extra £££'s above rival hotels.

Staff are no longer going that extra mile, leaving your glasses empty and having to keep asking for drinks, or waiting at the breakfast table finishing your breakfast whilst still waiting for tea and coffee,
Lunch, Being served two meals 30 minutes apart in splashes pool bars, why would a burger take 30 mins extra than a hot dog.
The buffets evening meals are dull, no longer the huge seafood platters - everything has been downsized to standard average food, repeated meals most evenings and your empty meal plates are no longer sweaped away quickly but left to pile up

Gone are the pretty decorations, the ice sculptures - theme nights, gone is decent entertainment in the horizon lounge, gone is the welcome fruit basket for repeat guests welcoming you back, gone are the exceptional well spoken english reception staff now you are continuing repeating yourself - Check out was a nightmare and we were made late for our private transfer.

It was a new hotel in the late 90.s , but it is now showing age and it need some reburbishing,
For example, If you book beach horseriding, you are met by two non speaking engligh gentleman who ask you to wear helmets - broken cycling helmets that would do more damage than good if you had a fall. Not that we could communicate this to them.

Housekeeping has slipped, we had dirty bed duvet covers with ink staines and blood on the lined curtains, we had a light broken and the bath plug had to be replaced as we couldnt empty the bath.

Furthermore - we went back at a specific time to celebrate a big special birthday, the hotel were notified we were repeat guests coming back for a special birthday and the hotel did nothing. Where as previous years for normal birthday without notifying them you are presented with a cake to your room. That special touch which we cherished and brough us back.

It pains me to write this as we were such huge huge fans, but the resort of kota kinabula is so up and coming, new airport, new shopping centres and numerous apartments being built. The Nexus will get left behind, it no longer stands out and yet prices have gone up.

This still by far, has the best beach, I still would rate this a five star hotel but for anyone like us who has been before, dont bother returning you will be disappointed, save the extra money pick another hotel.

Just back from our 5th visit to Nexus and again it completely lived up to our expectations. Rooms were clean and serviced twice a day. Food in all restuarants was excellent and the breakfasts in the Penyu were especially good with an amazing choice for all nationalities. All staff were polite and friendly and made an effort to learn our first names which made us feel welcome.
The Fiesta Club card is still available to residents which gives unlimited golf for 1 month for £176 - amazing value if you play every day like we did.
Heard of some problems with sandflies on the beach but I was not bitten.
The only downside to Nexus is its isolated position in relation to KK but if you share a taxi or bet the hotel shuttle bus it is not too bad price wise.
