I seldom write bad reviews and have always tried to give hotels a chance to make changes for the better but this one really got to me. A couple of days ago 3 of us guys went to Kinabalu to play golf. Having read a little about Nexus resort we felt it would be good combination of on resort golf and the beach to relax after. The problems started the minute we checked in. We had booked on the internet direct with the resort. I sea facing room with an extra bed for 3 nights. 2 single beds. Not too difficult I think. We received the confirmation and were all set to go. Upon arrival we were surprised to find out that the check in counter had no record of our request for a sea facing room with 2 single beds and extra bed. The 2 single bed issue was sorted out quickly and we were assured that the extra bed would be there. When we got to the room we found that the sea was no where in sight. Having a tee time to meet we left it as that.
When we retured after our game in the evening we called the conceirge to confirm the extra bed and again nobody knew anything about it. Again we were assured it was on the way. It arrived and again we let it slide. The next evening I went to the transport counter to arrange transport to another golf club. The counter guy took down our request and told us to collect the transport ticket the next morning at our requested time. At the requested time the next morning we went to the counter and discovered that there was no transport arranged for us. This time I really lost it and gave the counter guy a good mouth full. He claimed that the night guy had not informed him. yet I saw the night guy keying in the details to the system. They then told us they may only be able to arrange a one way transport because we did not pre-arrange ? What the hell ? After another mouth full were given the transport we requested. That night upon our return to the hotel we wanted to arrange our airport tranfer the next morning. Who should be at the counter but the guy from the previous night.Upon questioning him he claimed that everythingg was in the system and he had followed up with the morning guy. I cannot beleive a hotel that claims to be renowned for great asian service could mess simple things up. beleive it or not it gets better. The next morning when we checked out the hotel sent a buggy to our room to collect us and our luggage to the lobby for our transfer to the airport. Upon reaching the lobby the buggy driver helped us unload the luggage. My buddy took out $5 to tip him. His reply was ' If you are going to give me such a boring tip, keep it for yourself " My buddy was too shocked to even reply. I have never in all my years travelling had such a bad experience.
Don't get me wrong.the resort is nice and the beach is beautiful. the golf course is simple but adequate for the amateur golfer. the service on the other hand leaves alot to be desired !

We stayed 7 nights in this marvelous place, we had a spacious room with a balcony overlooking the ocean. There is a beautiful garden surrounding the hotel and a full size golf course. Friendly staff, good restaurants and a 7 mile private beach makes this hotel one of our favorites.

Nexus Pool Villa is ideal for family with young children. The villa is spacious, kitchen is well equiped, pool is child friendly and the beach is at your doorstep. The breakfast provided is good and comprehensive.

The disadvantages are a few.

1. The Villa is 2km away from the main hotel lobby where breakfast is servied.

2. The main Resort is isolated a 20 minute drive to the largest mall The One Borneo and 40 minute to the City.

3. Hotel provides shuttle service from Villa to the main lobby but punctuality is questionable.

4. Hotel service is not 5 stars but bearable.

I recommend anyone staying at the Villa to rent a car from the airport driving around Kota Kinabalu is easy. Do try the horse riding at Kindawan Horse Riding at Tuaran Beach Resort it is fantastic however not easy to find the place on self drive the last 2.5km is an off road out of nowhere leading to the Resort entrance.

Overall it was a memorable holiday for my family.

Had a great beach holiday at Nexus Resort. Arrived at the airport and pickup was waiting. Check-in was a breeze (I had pre-booked from a travel website) and early check in was allowed. As the resort was not crowded during my visit, we managed to obtain a room according to our request from the booking. The room is spacious and well layout. What I like most is the ocean view from the balcony of our Ocean Deluxe Room. There was a slight drizzle on our first day, the rest of my 4D3N stay; the days were bright and sunny. The resort has a 6km beach, we attempted to walk to one end and back, but were utterly defeated by the scorching sun (even with the help of the ocean breeze, clean beach and umbrella!). Breakfast menu is quite limited, but overall good choice of restaurants and ala-carte choices, though the prices can be pricy (consistent with a high end resort pricing). I think the room has free internet access, otherwise, payable service is available. Late check-out was also accommodated and again private car was arranged (thought it was slightly late). Bear in mind this place is suitable if you like the beach, golf and waterpark as the resort is secluded and quite a distance (at least half hour) from town. And you have to pay for the shuttle service to visit the town, basically, most services are payable except for breakfast which is included in the room rate and the gym which we visited. The hotel staffs were also very friendly. The only minor thing that I found disappointing was both the local calls phone facility which requires payments were faulty. If the intention was that guests should just use the phone in the room (and probably get charged a fair bit?), it’s better they remove the phones, else get them fix as a facility for guests and diners. Anyway, overall it was a good holiday, though it’s fairly unlikely we would visit again as the price is a bit steep for us and there are so many other wonders in Borneo.

Fantastic resort. Nothing is too much trouble. The accomodation was lovely. The food was good - although after 2 weeks became a little repetitive The only negatives was the price of alcohol - approx £5.00 a drink and lack of evening entertainment. Take advantage of the happy hours at all bars. Take the last shuttle from the hotel at 5 pm. into Kota Kinabalu and enjoy the many restaurants and bars then a taxi back to the resort. Would recommend the overnight Turtle Island and the Orangutan rehabilitation trip. A word of advise if doing the white water rafting ensure that their is sufficent rainfall prior to going! A superb holiday.

I stayed at the Nexus resort service apartment for two nights with a couple of friends recently. We all unanimously agree that the service at Nexus resort is the worst that we have encountered.

(i) Although we booked an apartment for four persons, upon check in, only one key card was issued. When we asked the potter to give us an extra key card, we were told that they "ran out of key cards". However, when a few hours later we personally went to the reception to inquire if it was indeed the case that they had "ran out of key cards", the lady at the reception took out a stack of key cards from the cupboard and issued one to us. Either the potter did not understand English or he was just plain lazy.

(ii) Our second gripe was the resort's failure to provide us with any bath towels despite our repeated requests. Upon check in, we requested for towels as we noticed that our bathrooms did not come with any towels. The staff informed us that there was a "linen problem" but assured us that our towels would arrive in the evening. However, when we returned to the room that night, the towels did not arrive as promised. We had to call again before the towels arrived. On the second day, we encountered the same problems. The chambermaid when cleaning the rooms failed to replenish the towels. When we called in the mid-afternoon to ask for towels, we were again informed that they had a "linen problem" but that the towels would arrive within two hours. As you would guess, this promise was not fulfilled. I reminded the reception several times that afternoon/evening. In the end, I had no choice but to call the main reception of the main resort and asked to be put direct to housekeeping. When I asked the housekeeping manager if there was indeed a "linen problem", the person did not respond with a "yes". Within half an hour, my towels were delivered. Clearly, there was no such linen problem. The problem lay with the service staff.

(iii) The third issue we had was the irregular shuttle services that takes us between the service apartment, the main resort (where all the restaurants and facilities are) and the sports lagoon. As they are all between 5 to 7 minutes apart, it was not possible to go via foot. We therefore had to rely heavily on the internal shuttle service provided by Nexus. As they were short handled, we had to wait long periods of time for the shuttle service to take us from point to point. Our issue is not just with the length of time it takes for the shuttle service to come, but the fact that the hotel staff could not give definite answers (i.e. whether is 5 minutes or 30 minutes) as to approximately how long it would take. The timing of the shuttle bus was erratic and it was therefore hard to plan our schedules.

(iv) Upon check in, we were told that we had to pay for our entire stay in full up front (plus more to cover any charges that may be incurred). We were told that if we spent less than what we had paid, this amount would be refunded to us. We had difficulties trying to reason/clarify with the reception at the service apartment as they had problems communicating in English. We were finally told that we did not need to pay the amount up front but that they required a credit card. This was furnished. The lady however came back with a receipt which indicated that she had swiped the card for an amount which was more than a night's stay but less than our two night's stay. Not only did it appear to be an arbitrary figure, what shocked us was that they did so without informing us! They assured us that this amount was not in fact deducted but was sort of like kept in escrow. We didn't understand that. In the end, after much to-and-fro, this transaction was voided. This was however not the end of the billing saga.

(v) On our last day at the resort, upon checking out, the reception at the service apartment informed us that according to their system, nothing was outstanding from us, i.e. that we had fully paid for our stay on the first day. This surprised us as we had the impression that we had not paid for our stay at all. In the event, we took the shuttle bus to the main resort in order to clarify with the reception there. The system at the reception reflected otherwise - i.e. that we had not paid for our bills. We were glad that we made a conscious effort not to charge any tours/food to our room but chose to pay in cash instead as their billing system appears not to be entirely accurate.

We were all very disappointed with the service at the Nexus resort. We had seen a brochure where they marketed themselves as a five star resort and was therefore looking forward to the stay.

On the bright side, I would say that the service apartment is charming and nicely furnished. The private beach is also pristine and not crowded. The food at the restaurants (including the free breakfast) is also good. A downside though is that the resort is about 45 to 60 minutes from the city centre. As such, if you are looking to explore the Sabah city centre, this is certainly not the resort for you.

Here's the email reply after our trip that we found out the website or the check-in staff didn't even bother to highlight twice the lower rates advertised in a local newspaper which we are qualified for:

We can not afford to sell all rooms at low rates. And I would reprimand a reservation staff if she converted our premium clients to our cheap promo rates.
We are sorry to learn that you won't be staying with us but are still glad that you will be back to Kota Kinabalu. You are right, Sabah has some great resorts you should try.
Enjoy your next holiday!
