Nexus Resort & Spa Karambunai

We stayed here for 5 nights just before Christmas and initially were doubt after reading some of the reviews.

We were given one of the rooms at The Borneo Wing, it was fabulous with big garden and facing the beautiful beach and the staff always keeps our room neat and clean.

We tried nearly all the restaurants, we enjoyed the most the Sunset Bar, the Pizza, you gotta try it, even though it was very crowded during breakfast, someone was always alert for our requests.

Our two kids 9 and 10, can not be happier with the grounds, the pool and the very long beach and the very friendly staffs around the resort.

We are still in KK till today staying in another hotel in town for business purpose, we wish we are still there now.

Fantastic resort, friendly staff, beautiful beach and surrounding, good food, clean room what else that we want...

Family friendly hotel with a huge resort area which you take about ten to 8 minutes walking to cross it. Kids can play around and you may keep them on sight. That is an advantage when you have more than one kid. Batik painting is available only for a restricted schedule. It should be available for extended periods during the day. Same applies to the Kids Club, which in turn, could be much bigger and offer e.g. an open-air playground. The Sports Center has several activities but equipment is old. The sailing boats are scarce and old too. Other alternative programs should be provided departing from the bay @ the hotel. Amenities and Facilities are well designed and offer a good experience. Rooms are huge comparing to other hotels in Asia. But bedroom cleanliness is bad. The lack of cleaning has sparked my allergy to dust...a pharmacy is only available 10 minutes drive but a Doctor can be called upon paying 300 RM and medicines are not included. Food variety is a problem after the fourth day we had enough. The buffets do not vary on a daily basis as they say. The staff is friendly but we had a an unfortunate incident with the restaurant manager at the Sunset Bar Restaurant. it marked our stay by opposition to the kindness we found in other places to eat at the resort. At last but not least the sand flies: it is an astonishing attack performed only to adults. So kids are not included :). As soon as you arrive you should by insect repellent.

It is a five star Resort that is a little worn reducing some areas to four stars. Construction was underway but was limited to business hours so we were never troubled by it. We found the main restaurants to be a very good value and enjoyed the Chinese cuisine and the breakfast buffet was wonderful. The Italian place was very good as well but we only indulged once in a wonderful steak. The pool side and beach side service was very good, some of the Sunset Grill sandwiches were not very tasty, pizza and pasta seemed their forte. In fairness it is a massive job to serve food in a windy outdoor environment. For playing in the surf or walking along the beach I have never seen a resort that can compare!

My husband and I, along with my parents and sisters stayed at the Nexus resort for 4 days in December 2009. We had a 2 bdrm Pool Villa and a Spa Suite booked originally. Although the resort grounds were beautiful, overall, the service was extremely poor for the price we paid, and we will never stay at this hotel again.

- we checking in late as we arrived at the resort at 11pm. When we arrived in our room, we were missing about half our toiletries, and some of the toiletry boxes were empty. Small things, but with the price we paid for these rooms, this is unacceptable.

- the Pool Villas and Spa suites were located 2km away from the main resort area. While it was beautiful and quite tranquil where we were, it was a pain to get to the main resort (where breakfast was served, and where pick up for transportation to KK was). At busy times, it was a 15min wait for a van to bring us to the main resort area. There was no regularly scheduled van service to and from the main resort.

- the breakfast buffet was included in our package, and was from 6:30am-10:30am, buffet style. However when we arrived the first morning at 9:30am, the breakfast area was packed and we were told we had to wait for a table, except that there were two other adjacent dining areas that were empty! Understandably, if there were no tables we should have to wait. But for the price we were paying at this resort, there should be no reason why they could not use all available resources for guests at busy times.

- the toilet in our room was leaking water, so much water that we built a dam with towels. We called the hotel staff 3 times about our leaking toilet and waited 15 hours before anyone would do anything. We were moved (upgraded) to a Pool Villa after they finally came to our room.

- the pool villas have wonderful folding floor to ceiling glass doors that open up to a beautiful ocean view. The only problem with this is our glass doors did not lock. With all the reports of people having things stolen out of their safes/rooms on this forum, I was not going to stay in a room that wasn't secure. I called the front desk, and they told me they don't have keys to lock about half of the glass doors at the pool villas! Where else in the world do you pay THIS MUCH for a room that doesn't have lockable doors?

- the TV card was missing in our room. Not a big problem as we didn't come to Borneo to watch TV, but still bothersome.

- finally, we called a van from the front desk to take us to the airport on our last day in Borneo and we were given a van that was too small to fit all 6 of us! We called the front desk and they insisted that we asked for a van for 4 to the airport, not 6. Unacceptable.

Borneo was amazing, and the people are super friendly, but this resort really soured our vacation experience. The resort and resort grounds are beautiful, but they are really missing well trained staff. Next time we will find a hotel actually in KK, as Nexus was REALLY far from the city.

Stayed for a couple of weeks in Nexus in late december, and have a few things on my heart..

1. Golf. Brilliant. A very nice, beautiful course and excellent serviced staff. My tripsaver.
2. Rooms. Good and spacious. A little small TV - but hey, I am not in a beach resort for watching TV..
3. Resort location and exterior. Beautiful. However it is a mere 45 min taxi ride to KK, where all the good restaurants, shopping and fun is. Also, the resort is not that helpful to assist you with transport out of the resort.
4. Spa. Very nice, but way too expensive compared to out of resort spa's. (About 3x price)
5. Staff service. Very up and down. Some of the restaurants (Olives, Paryuu, Darling Darling) had good service, while other SUCKED. Sorry, but this resort have to work on staff training in all areas.
6. Restaurants. Crazy overpriced restaurants, services and drinks.
Olive - reasonable a la carte, but the food did not taste that good. Too expensive compared to the quality of the food.
Paryuu - A very nice buffet rest with the best food in the place. My favourite.
Sunset Bar - an Ok lunch menu
Golf restaurant - Good food, even though three of us got slightly food poisoned after one of the lunches I had there.

We even were stupid enough to attend the new years "Party", a resaonable buffet and entertainment (the local nightclub band) for RM 483! Per Person excluding drinks!!! Can't blame anyone else than ourselves that were stupid enuff to book that event. Our total bill for 5 pax for the new years event was about RM5000

7. Pool. Not so good pool for adults. Only 1.2m deep on the deepest and quite small. But a great pool if you travel with kids. For adults I recommend the sea.

Never going back as a beach leisure guest even though it is really beautiful there. I might go to Nexus for golfing only. But then I will live somewhere else. I think the Shangri-La will be a better option for me.

I got the feeling they were trying to suck my money until it was slightly painful all the time. If the service and quality of what you paid for had been better or close to expectations - no problem. But if you're left with the feeling that you were robbed it's not good.

Plus: Exterior, Amenities, Golf, Beach
Minus: The rest

Horrible service - Made reservations 1 month in advance, upon arrival it took staff over an hour to find. Had to call everyday for room to be cleaned. Long wait for taxi's, food by the pool and just about everything else. If the place was crowded I could understand after a very long week we only saw two other families. Sunday must be family day for the staff, as van loads of locals were pouring in all day, as we sat at the beach restaurant we noticed the locals didnt pay the same high price for food and got much better service...
Room - All the pics they show for this place is for the 2 - 3 bedroom pool villa not the 1 bedroom, which is located in 6 floor tower block with a shared pool. The internet connection (is not wireless) is located behind the bed, so if you need to work or surf you will have to do it while laying in the bed.
Location - The Nexus resort is far from everything, this place is at the back of the Nexus resort, which is 5 min van ride (every hour no exceptions) or 20 min walk. There is absolutly no reason to stay at the spa villas as both the pool and beach are small, so going to the main hotel is a much better option for food, service and activities.
Value - As this place is so far away from anything, they know you have no choice when it comes to purchases so they put a high markup on everything. When you arrive at the spa villas you have to purchase groceries (water, coffee, food, etc...) and its not cheap. The first night we went to the italian restaurant at the main Nexus resort, dinner for 2 people and 1 bottle of wine, 600 RM and the food was ok. Next night we went into the town of KK (45 min taxi ride), lots of choice for good seafood. We couldn't even finish all the great seafood we ordered, cost 60 RM, with a few beers. Went across to one of the bars, listen to the filipino band and had a couple more rounds and spent no more than 200 RM.
As I was in KK on a speaking engagement we spent two nights at the Shangra-La and it was heaven compared to this place, close to everything, better beach, better facilities, better service, just better everything.
I have no problem paying a 5 star price as long as I'm getting a 5 star service. I dont think Nexus Resort Spa Villas is deserving of the 5 star rating, even after complaing to the MOD (Manager On Duty) the service improved slightly while he was there, but when he was gone (which was often) the staff continued to ignore us. I would definately go back to KK as it is a lovely place but I would never recommend this place for stay.

The attitude of the staffs is terrible!I felt discriminated against as they are friendly towards the foreigners but to local people they are NOT! Come on, treat your guests EQUALLY!Dont underestimate people, you have no idea what we are capable of. The hairdryer in the room I was staying nearly burned my hair. I toooootally agree with simpledreams that the wall/door are not soundproof. RM600++/night and you dont even have soundproof walls/doors?WHAT A SHAME. They said the rooms location is only a walking-distance. OMG no!There's no buggy service as well. Congrats to Tanjung Sanctuary & Berjaya Resort Langkawi. Those are what i call a world-class hotel! The service in Nexus and the mentality of the staff are at a standard of some cheap motels in Lorong Haji Taib or far worse!
