“beautiful and relaxing, missing just a little polish”
Reviewed 3 January 2011

My family (husband, 12 year old son, and I) just returned from a week in KK, 3 nights at Nexus and the last 3 at Shangri-la's Rasa Ria Resort. Our room at Nexus was an Ocean Panorama on the 4th floor. I would recommend asking for an upper floor room so you can enjoy the fabulous view of the sea and sunset from the balcony. The room was large, very clean, and very posh. We had none of the plumbing or electrical problems that others have written about. I wonder if they stayed in the villas. I loved being just 2 minutes from the restaurants and pool, so I'm glad we stayed in the wing we chose.

The gardens and beach were lovely and full of chances to encounter wildlife. Twice I came upon Giant Monitor lizards, once in the garden and once as I jogged along the jungle edging the beach. There were also crabs, starfish, and so many colorful birds. Always keep your camera ready.

The breakfast buffet was more than adequate and very tasty. We also had meals at the Sunset Bar where the food was a litte bland, but the view was unmatched anywhere.

The tranquil pool and the other recreational areas were well-maintained. The resort was not crowded and so we could enjoy table tennis, pool, the bicycles, squash all at our own pace.

The staff were friendly and competent, handling all of our requests with ease. Taxis and tours were arranged without any problems. We joined a snorkelling tour to the nearby islands and being out of town posed very little hardship, we just had to leave a little early in a taxi (about 80ringgit). The hotel seemed a little quiet, so if you are looking for nightlife, this is not the place for you. We looked at a couple of places in town (where we could have a broader choice of restaurants and bars), but we would have traded in the beauty and tranquility of this quiet elegant resort for the noise and chaos and smell of the town. We felt very welcome and upon leaving, we felt well-rested and very satisfied. I'm sure this is the place for anyone interested in enjoying some peaceful time in a gorgeous setting.

This was our second consecutive Christmas visit from Hong Kong. Things got off to a bad start when we had to queue up twice and wait over an hour for check in. Our room wasn't ready until 2:45pm and there a general air of chaos about the place.

The hotel grounds were just as we left them - vast and beautiful with plenty of room to relax. The pool setting seemed just right for young families but we preferred the quieter location on the lawns.

We loved our morning walks along the beach. It is 6km long but the last few hundred metres are difficult to get through because of fallen trees and trash. I was able to work out a route for my evening run which took me through the jungle before looping back on to the beach. (You can also sneak onto the golf course for a lovely run if it's raining).

We found the staff to be friendly but overworked. Many seemed to be doing double shifts and this inevitably had a negative impact upon service. It was difficult to order a drink from the bar and, whilst the room service was swift, the remains of our meal sat on a tray outside our room for more than 12 hours.

The breakfast buffet at Sunset Bar was quite good. The fresh fruit and cereals were always in plentiful supply. It's a pity that the hotel does not focus more on producing delicious Malaysian cuisine at meal times. Instead it produces a mediocre mish mash of 'international cuisine'. Drinks are very expensive for Asia but we came prepared with plenty of wine. We had plenty of snacks with us too as the hotel shop is a rip off.

Despite the negative remarks, we'd recommend this hotel to people and families looking to 'down tools' for a week or so and enjoy a relaxing beach holiday. All of the rooms have stunning ocean views and the sound of the sea stays with you throughout the day. It's true that the location is remote and the hotel 'has you by the balls' to a great extent but if you are living in the city and want to get away from it all, this is the perfect antidote.

The hotel was built with great design but with poor maintenance, things just run down over the years. Not a single shower in the hotel room and spa works properly and all the toilets are nearly blocked. The light panel at the bedside barely works ... I have to screw off the reading light bulb to turn it off.

Service fluctuates too. It took us 5 phone calls plus over 1 hour waiting for 2 tooth brushes and over 1 hour to be told the room service we ordered is not available.
However the concierge people are really helpful and efficient. I recieved great help from them today by getting us a drive to the airport with short notice after knowing the travel agent completely missed our booking. I must give them a big thank you!

Been staying in the hotel for one night. location far from airport-taxi fare $85RM per way.On arrival at the hotel at 10:00am,request to check in early and willing to pay but only allowed to check in at 2:00pm , The receptionist said the hotel is full eventhough the hotel looks empty. Request for first floor as email earlier but given ground floor at the corner facing the road. Room smells and looks old and patio very dirty. Room looks like not been occupied for years. Breakfast serve is the worse ever- canned mushroom, packed wedges, limited choice of bakery, canned fruits, baked beans. Said the restaurants provide finest malaysian cuisine, but there is not even roti canai, fried mee or nasi lemak serve during breakfast as in others similar stars of hotel in sabah..
Dinner ala carte at kingfisher is ok.
Night show by the hotel staff is great.
swimming pool- huge and relaxing area.
venue of hotel-beachfront, nice, clean beach with golf course on the other side.
You can find far better hotel at city area with the same rate. But if you looking for beach and quite isolated-nexus is the place. lucky only stay in this hotel for one nite....Shangrila tanjung aru is still the best --so far

We were really disappointed in this place; I could list all the issues we had but don't need to as it's all been said already by others on TripAdvisor (how I wish I had checked this site before booking)..There was no real service to speak of, the basics were not in place when we arrived such as glasses in the room, a directory of the resort or enough towels. When we complained to management they simply didn't bother to return our call and when we finally managed to speak with someone they just didn't care.
The resort is a long way from the city and they charge a ridiculous price to take a shuttle (I found out later that other resorts offer free shuttles to the city), taxis are a rip off and as the resort is isolated there is no option to take local transportation at a 10th of the price.
The place is shabby, service is poor or non existent and compared with other 5 star resorts in Malaysia it is extremely poor value.

The second day was my birthday. We went shopping in the daytime. In the evening when we went back to Nexus, I found the surprise --- a beautiful and attractive cake on the table. Firstly I thought it was from my friends staying at another room, but when I opened the nice card, their greetings in the artistic fonts made me moved, I was grateful for their value-added service. Next time I will continue to stay here.
