We dropped in about 8.00am in the morning and the place was almost fully occupied. A cheerful waiter seated us and proceeded to recommend / help us order a local coffee & toast set. Later on we realized that everyone else (apparently all locals) were enjoying the noodles from the stall at the front of the shop. The coffee was not too strong or sweet - different flavored from those in Singapore. The bread was toasted but was not particularly crisp while the half boiled eggs had a more natural appearance rather being the homogenously battery-farm produced variety. All in, a nice old time "Malaysian coffee shop" experience!

We went here by coincidence as the restaurant for breakfast we originally planned was closed. Many locals (especially elders) was dining and chating here. The son of the owner is so nice to introduce all the foods available, as well as the history of the restaurant (since 1896). The tea and coffee are better than Fook Yuen. The beef bun and BBQ pork bun are soft and tasty. Unfortunately, we didn't try its satay (not available at breakfast time). Good place to experience local life. Will come back to try other food next time.

One day, while walking through Jalan Pantai, we saw satay being grilled at this restaurant but were too full to stop and eat. A couple of days later, at about 10am we set out to try this place. Fortunately I had taken a photo of the shop and was able to identify it, even though it was set up differently in the front for serving other food. We asked and was told that they start making satay at 11 am, so we sat down at 10:30, ordered drinks from the restaurant and waited. The old Chinese owner came up to us and introduced himself. He said the bakery 悦昌西饼 was started in 1897 and continuously operated through five generations of the Leong family, down to his son. He even proudly showed two certificates he received from Canada for his 80th birthday.

When the satay-cooking team started, at 11 am, there were already several large groups of customers waiting and the place was full. We rushed in our order quickly and were served first. The eight of us totally consumed 80 sticks of delicious beef or chicken satay, with small blocks of sticky rice for complements. The satay sauce is the best. We paid for the satay to the satay counter and the drinks to the bakery.

I recommend this place highly.
