“Nice hotel in a great location”
Reviewed 14 June 2011

We stayed a couple of times at The Jesselton Hotel during our trip to Sabah. It in right in the centre of town and you can walk to most things in the CBD. We had a suite with our 2 children and it was great value for money. The Jesselton is a good hotel to stay if you are spending 2-3 nights in KK, and if you are there on a Sunday the Gaya St Market is just our the front door. Being in the CBD there is a bit of traffic noise which did affect sleep a bit, but the beds are very comfortable. The breakfast in the restaurant was OK, but we went out most mornings and had breakfast at one of the many local options.

This is a good, above average hotel for a very reasonable price. Our 2nd floor room was clean, tastefully decorated, had a large comfortable queen bed, writing desk, lounge chairs, flat screen TV, good aircon and generous size bathroom with shower/bath combination.

500 metres to the waterfront and situated in a great location with numerous cafes and restaurants all around.

Lots to do in KK including, island daytrips and snorkelling, Padas river white water rafting, Pilipino night markets, Mount Kinabalu and lots more, ask friendly hotel staff for advice.

Would definitely stay at Jesselton Hotel again.

We had a splendid 3 days stay at the Jesselton in April 2011. The staff went out of their way to help us in every way. Miss Janet, the manageress, even gave us a box of Sabah tea as a farewell gift as we showed interest in the Sabah tea farm. The room and bathroom we had on the second floor was impeccable and spacious offering a nice view on the tree lined street. The bathroom was very well equipped including a magnifiying mirror, bathrobes and sarong.

To compare the Jesselton with the Raffles in Singapore seems a bit unfair to me, as the price range and size are totally different. The Jesselton is a small Grand Hotel in its own right combining old world charme with modern appliances and personalized service.

Room Tip: opt for deluxe room with street view

We had initially booked to stay at the Jesselton for four nights to form the "rest and relaxation" part of our recent holiday to Sarawak and Sabah. Basic Itinerary was to visit Bako & Kubah National Parks in Sarawak and then head over to Sabah.
Due to some changed flights and a change of mind on our part, we ended up staying for six nights. We loved our time at the Jesselton.

Located at the northern end of town, it has easy access to the wharf for the trips out to the islands, but is a bit of a walk to the night market.

Travelling with a fourteen year old, and given that we wanted this part of the holiday to be, after the rigors of Bako accommodation, as comfortable as possible, we ended up booking the Suite Room and had an extra bed made up in the Lounge room portion of the Suite with an extra bed rather than two separate rooms.
Their web site notes that the Suite is 40 sq mts. I have to say that it felt way bigger than that. We always felt very comfortable in the room with each of us able to find a space to read - watch television - or simply relax without unreasonably impacting on what the others were doing. With the extra bed made up in front of the large Plasma/LCD TV, our son was in some sort of minor heaven, with books to read and cable telly every night.

The overall size of the hotel (three floors) also suited us perfectly as we have never really enjoyed the larger Meridian's, Novatels etc.

Staff were always friendly and helpful and the food at the Italian restaurant, whilst somewhat expensive, was good quality and made a nice change from the staple of noodles and rice.

The one negative was the lack of a computer. Whilst they had Wi-Fi access, we had chosen not to bring a laptop with us. It would have been nice if a laptop was available for hire.

Nevertheless, overall a great place to stay and we will book again next time we visit Kota Kinabalu.

We really liked being there. The staff was very helpful staff and welcoming. In the bar which is connected to the hotel, they have live music some evenings and there is a very nice atmosphere. The hotel is not new but well maintained keeping its original style.
The location is very central.

For the price you pay, you would expect for there to be internet connection in the room, as they advertise. Each day, after a polite request that they fix their wireless, there was only a weak "use the lobby" response.

NOTE TO JESSELTON MANAGEMENT: It's year 2011! No one wants to do business in your lobby. What are you doing with the extreme profit you are making from the room charge? Find someone to fix your wireless! And teach your front desk how to keep it up and running.

Even the no frills backpacker lodges and coffee shops right around you have good internet connections. Why not the Jesselton?

For the price you pay, you should expect better.

This hotel is good, on a nice street and walking distance to the attractions of KK. The room was spacious and comfortable.
Breakfast was included in our rate, but service was slow and we went accross the street to a coffee shop a couple of times.
Reception staff were friendly.
