“Very comfortable, funky old hotel”
Reviewed 26 April 2012

Lovely old place - built in 1954 as a luxury colonial hotel when the entire city centre was rebuilt after the British & Japanese pretty much destroyed it during 2nd world war fighting.
Has pictures of Lady Mountbatten being served tea there in the late 50s by a young waiter who still works there today, and the friendly housekeepers wear 1950s British maids uniforms
Very comfortable & clean rooms, not luxurious by today's standards [there's a huge Meridien across from the market on the waterfront if that's what you want] but a really nice small hotel with very helpful staff.
There's a seriously good Italian restaurant on the ground floor cooking real italian food - [wonder where their cook was trained ?] including a thin crust pizza we'd have been happy to eat in Rome. Highly recomended for dinner if you're nasi goreng'd out..
Breakfast is good - fresh squeezed orange juice & good omelettes
Not expensive & we enjoyed it & would certainly stay there again

Room Tip: Upper floors are a little nicer but all rooms are good

we stayed here early april we enjoyed our stay here.
the rooms can do with updating but were ok and clean.we took option to have breakfast but there are a few cafes near by so wont worry to take this option again
the staff were friendly and hotel is in a good poistion to the jesselton ferry terminal and a walk to the waterfront
ensure you go to the market near the meridian the fish market here is one of the best we have seen for atmosphere and local colour and life

Pretty good hotel in the colonial style. Nice rooms with added bidet function! Worth staying for some luxury before/after backpacking

We stayed in a deluxe double room for 4 nights.
It was very clean and spacious, the staff more than friedly and the location very good.
Breakfast can be chosen a la carte in the restaurant and is very tasty. Try the fresh juices of all kind. The hotel is located in an area with many restaurants, shops and travel agencies where u can book any trip ( diving, snorkling, hiking,...).
Nothing to complain about.

The staff at front desk were extremely friendly and helpfull during our stay here. The serevice is very good. Our room was spacious, clean and very comfy with superb bathroom. Free Wifi, mineral water, caffee, tea in the room. Very good choice in KK.

Stayed here two nights on either end of a trip to climb Mount Kinabalu. It's a lovely setting, and the rooms are comfortable and quiet — with the world's strongest and hottest showers. Wi-fi was excellent. Service was friendly. The rooms are a bit dated, with faded, worn carpeting, but you don't get the feel that it's dirty -- just in need of an update.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing Gaya Street.

The Jesselton hotel was by far our favourite hotel in Kota Kinabalu. The rooms were comfortable and quiet and the hotel was located in the centre of town, within easy walk of restaurants, shops and the night markets. Service was friendly and prompt, and best of all they had free wi-fi. The hotel had a lovely atmosphere, it is a boutique hotel with a colonial heritage decor. The only drawback was no pool, and there was a slight smell of cigarette smoke in the room although the aircon soon got rid of that, and we found that in every hotel we stayed at in KK. We stayed at other more expensive hotels in KK but the Jesselton was by far the best value for money, and we would definitely stay there again.
