“serious experience in 301”
Reviewed 1 April 2014

sorry for the title, but that is the most unforgettable impression of my Jesselton experience.

Anyways ,there are also good points.

Lobby: the style of the whole hotel is totally attractive traditional one, the taxi driver also gave a high comment to it on the way there.I did like it at the first sight.

Check in: no warm greeting or smile but quick speed, anyways, not bad

Room: it could say good, historical sofa, closet and mirror. The pre-condition is that you ignore the details, for example, we two check in but only one bathrobe and one towel ,and magically two bottles of bath gel(both of them are used already before obviously), no other shampoo or toothbrush thing. Isn't it a little mean for a 3-star hotel??
The most terrible thing is the toilet, it can flush nothing away!! I told the problem to the staff, and their “solution” is helping us flushing every time! Actually I thanks so much to the staff who really help us, but we have to feel embarrassed for our using the toilet, is it our fault?? why cannot change another room for us?? BTW, I am sure the hotel guys know clearly about the toilet problem in 301 as they reply me so quickly even I didn't finish speaking.

Staff: they are nice actually

Overview : the problem is serious enough to cover other good things

Room Tip: never recept the room 301

Stayed at this hotel which was brilliant for location, staff were very helpful but be careful of costs when using TripAdvisor Best prices featured booking services when paying direct to the hotel at the end of your stay.
On checking in with a costing from one of these companies, the staff wanted to charge me the taxes that was stated on the booking were included . After pointing out that on my quote these were included the original price was accepted.
On checking out however the Malaysian Ringgit cost was converted to Australian Dollars by the hotel at the time of checking out and at a very unfavourable rate resulting in a far higher cost than if Ringgit were converted by my Australian Bank.

Perfect for an arrival night or night before heading to Mt Kinabalu. Clean rooms, decent shower, plenty of eating options close by, including an odd but tasty bakery/dumpling place at was open at 6 am, so could have food before mountain climb.

Nice small and quaint rooms. Breakfast is ok but I would prefer warm meals.

Excellent location. Good friendly helpful staff. Will try my luck with a late checkout. Many eating places around. Coffee shop just across. Many banks with ATM nearby.

For taxi service just ask for help from the staff.

Just spent a night at the Jesselton on my way to Kuching and had a wonderful night's sleep there. True, their rooms are old, and a coat of paint and a little bit of patching here and there wouldn't hurt, but as a whole I'd say everything there is clean and works well. Moreover, the staff is kind and accommodating and the location is excellent.
One major problem though: their Wi-Fi connection. For some unknown reasons, most hotels in Malaysia (outside KL, that is) seem to be plagued with what I call the Ghost Internet Syndrome. You log on to their network without a problem, your phone or computer shows that you are connected to their Wi-Fi, but web pages take forever to load or don't load at all. Apparently, most hotels here in Malaysia cut corners when it comes to their Wi-Fi offering, and they do not have enough capacity to allow their guests to surf comfortably. As soon as you get, say, 20% of the people there connected to their network, the thing comes to a grinding halt. All the hotels and guest houses here seem to cut corners with the Internet service they provide, and it makes for a very frustrating experience when you depend on the internet to make calls and respond to important emails. In that regard, the Jesselton was no different from other (cheaper) hotels I've stayed at throughout my trip around Malaysia, and frankly they should be more serious about it. From what someone told me there, they are aware of the problem, but nothing is being done to fix it once for all. If it had not been for that issue with the Wi-Fi, I would have awarded them an excellent score, because they would certainly have deserved it.
Please note that as of March 2014, their in-house restaurant was closed due to ongoing renovations. I did not experience any noise during my stay here though, which is a good thing.

The Jesselton is the oldest hotel in Kota (1954). It is like a good old car, still running smooth, with some original parts. It probably needs some renovations in some areas, but all in all, it is a good option in Kota.

We were upgraded to the "deluxe" room, so it is difficult to judge the room on a value basis. For what I paid (£40), it is really good. Sure the room has that feel of the 70s about it, but there is nothing wrong with a bit of nostalgia, as long as the place is clean.

Breakfast was poor, but they were renovating the main breakfast area, so maybe that had something to do with it.

The hotel is in the middle of town, on Jalan Gaya, surrounded by restaurants. Kota Kinabalu would not win any prize as charming or even interesting city, but for what it is, the hotel is a good option, and very well located. I would stay there again, although for the same price, the Hotel Sixty3 across the road would be a better deal.

Kota is not a "bad" place. It is safe and friendly, but it is not interesting on its own. Perhaps because the town has been completely destroyed by allied bombing in WW2, it has not kept any of the old charm of colonial towns, charm that you can still find in Penang, or even Singapore. On top of that, you will struggle to comprehend the town's "tagline": a Forest Resort City. It is a city alright, but it is definitely not a resort, and the forest is a distant presence.

We had booked he twin room for 2 night but were upgraded to the suite [first night only].
The suite is quite spacious with a sitting room. The bathroom is quite large with toilet and bidet, bath/shower and a separate shower but lacked an exhaust fan.
The twin room was sufficient. The bathroom had a bath/shower & toilet (and exhaust fan).
Furniture and fittings are high quality and the service was very good and friendly.
We had issues with the power points. Once you plug in an adapter and your appliance, it falls out of the wall. This takes some clever engineering by stacking toilet rolls, books, cups or whatever it takes to get the right height to keep your appliance plugged in. This is not limited to the Jesselton, we had this issue in many hotels, however the Jesselton's power supply was not enough to power my hair dryer.
Breakfast was simple and light.
It was inconvenient for me as a smoker to go down to the lobby and out the front of the hotel for a cigarette (even though there were ashtrays in the room) where I didn't always feel safe/comfortable.
