“A fine hotel to stay in KK”
Reviewed 4 July 2014

Our family of 5 adults stayed here for 5 nights at the end of June and found it a very good place to stay. Previous reviews about the age of the place seem a little unjustified. Yes, there is a little wear and tear but the styling throughout I suspect is based on a "tip of the hat" to the old British Raj with the dark brown leather suites, old photos of KK and and dark wood used throughout. My gym boys found the work-out area with spa, sauna and hot tubs to their approval and the pool area was a lovely
escape from the hustle in the street below. Food was typical of a large chain with somewhat overpriced and perhaps dumbed down local variants for the international tourist, but hell, show me one that's not in any of these regions of the world. Rooms were clean and spacious and the location opposite the markets is spot on. Wi Fi worked but was time and location limited unless you took the upgrade package. Will happily recommend this hotel to friends with families who want to visit KK without reservation.

Hello Alan S,

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback on tripadvisor from your recent stay with us.

I am pleased that you and your family and enjoyed your stay with us and you will recommend the hotel to others who are travelling to Kota Kinabalu. I am a little disappointed that you found our food in the venue's to be generic and not interesting, our team have worked hard to provide a Tampatan Menu and other local items on the menu. It appears however that his was not explained to you during your stay so we need to work a little harder.

Thank you for the feedback and I hope you will return again!

Best regards,
Fiona

The hotel and the staff are just tops! beautiful views, amazing market across the street to enjoy.
Love this hotel.

Decided when planning our trip to Borneo to cap it off with a stay at the Shangri-La resort up the coast, after our 4 night stay here, which was nice.
Had I known what I know now, we would have stayed here - A better location, a better pool, better food, and the city at our feet - for the whole trip, rather than have moved to the secluded Disney-esque like resort up the coast.

Can't say enough about the staff - just exquisitely attentive and enjoyable. Room was nice, large and clean. In my book an extreme bargain especially considering the location and views. I asked them to set up a little something in our room for our 20th wedding anniversary - you know, a little bottle of nice champagne and some flowers and they went WAY over the top to make a beautiful surprise for my wife. So beautiful and warm hearted.

Try the Korean restaurant, next block over to the left, along the coastal road out front - 2nd floor.
Excellent!

it was awesome and memorable evening for both the couples, families and quests who have attended the wedding banquet on the 14. 6. 2014. From the initial preparation, everyone were very helpful and professional in dealing with us from the top management and the rest who were involved. The service was excellent , the foods were tastefully prepared and everything went well. Quests commented that the foods were nice and they went home very contended. Those who intend to get married and looking for a venue, well i strongly recommend Le Meridian hotel .

Room Tip: overlooking the sea

This hotel is one of our favourites, Most friendly personal and helpful. The rooms are spacious and well equip. On the 2nd floor is the pool with a bar and also the gym, love it. Breakfast (buffet) is nice for €. 12. You can also choose your own breakfast it's much cheaper.

Room Tip: All rooms are good take the top-level floor, very nice view.

We had a very pleasant stay at Le Meridien. After our strenuous hike up and down Mount Kinabalu the day before, all we wanted was a safe, comfortable and quiet place to recuperate!

We managed to do just that at Le Meridien. For the room we got, there were generous bed sizes (2 queens) so my kids and I could really sleep comfortably. Although Le Meridien is situated right on a busy road, none of the street traffic noise was detectable in our room. The spacious bedroom and bathroom were clean and had all the offerings of a top hotel, complete with a great view of the harbour. The pool was a welcome reprieve for our tired limbs and always fun for the kids.

Booked a Deluxe SeaView room with SPG webpage. A week before our arrival, The Hotel Marketing Services did a great job sending us welcome email & to reply if we have any special request on room set up with types of fruits, pillows , newspaper etc. which we did.
We checked in to Room 818 (far from the Lift , next to the Emergency Stairway) on 28 June 2014, stayed for 2 nights, room is spacious , nice view of the south china sea supposedly the KK Waterfront. Hotel location is just a stone throw away from all the shopping centres & markets. Room is fully equipped with amenities but only one bathrobe & a piece of soap despite our reservation of 2 adults in the room. Wireless connection is not free in the room. They did not offer the requested Borneo Post newspaper, instead its Sabah Times. Enquire at front desk, staff said we gotta to request for it???? Room Corridor smelled of food , there is a table trolley left for 14 hours outside few rooms away with left over food. Service staff should have cleared it away.
Business centre is located inside the Gym Area, quite inconvenient , was closed when i needed to use for printing. Went down to concierge , could not get our Boarding Pass printed as the staff did not seem to understand passenger need to do it by themselves. . Attended friend's 60th birthday function..Mabul Room is located inside the recreation area , quite a far walk to the restroom!!. Not a great experience for a first stay , there is certainly room for improvement.

Dear WorldGlutton,

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback with others from your stay with us last weekend.

In reading your review I am disappointed that we did not deliver an experience that was up to your expectations and specifically not up to our standards. I have taken the opportunity to address the specific where we fell short of our standards with our leadership team to ensure this is not repeated in the future.

I do hope you enjoyed your friends birthday and did not let this affect your overall weekend. Should you travel back to Kota Kinabalu again in the future please send me an email directly to fiona.hagan@lemeridien.com so I can take steps to recover from this experience.

With best regards,

My family was in KK for a holiday last week. We stayed in Le Meridien on 4 nights. One night, we had a city-facing room, which was huge and very comfortable. 2 twin beds. Toilet shower is separate from the bath and the toilet is huge too. Also came with vouchers for free cappuccino/espresso at the hotel lobby lounge! Very nice gesture. Check-in was fast and the lobby staff gave helpful info on the things to see and do during our stay.

The location of the hotel right smack in city centre means it is really accessible to the market and the malls. There are cabs readily available at the hotel entrance. Starbucks is just across the road and Gaya street is a 10-minute walk away for the Sunday market.

There is a huge market opp the hotel - selling grilled food in one section (lots of atmosphere and yummy wings!), and fresh veg in another, live seafood in another! Lots to see at night!

On our second half of the trip, we stayed in a sea-facing room which had a curved extension so it was even bigger! The housekeeping staff was really thoughtful - they must have observed by the pairs of shoes in the room - they gave us 6 bottles of water on Day 2! (so much water was provided in the rooms that throughout our stay in KK, we never had to buy water. Amazing!)

We had a few meals at the Circles Restaurant. Service is nothing short of excellent. Food quality great. We tried the international buffet on Monday - really good deal with 50% off for SPG members! And the kids ate for free =) Really liked how they did grilled tiger prawns, cuttlefish and crab on the spot !

During one breakfast at Circles, when we were being served coffee, the waitress kindly offered hot chocolate for the kids, which I felt was really nice and considerate. Our first at a hotel breakfast where the kids get chocolate. Not even at the Shang ri La Rasa Ria, where we stayed the second night in KK.

The kids meals are value for money - a giant pizza cost us 20RM, before 20% discount for SPG members. For one dinner, we waited a while for our orders to arrive. The waitress brought us papadums, pumpkin soup and warm bread rolls to apologise for the wait! Wow!

Le Meridien just set the bar higher and higher! We received a note slipped under our door, inviting us to a cocktail session by the pool , with the management. There was free flow beverages (including wine and beer) and finger food like eclairs and tim sum. The chef taught my kid how to make eclairs! interesting experience!

The pool on the second floor is great! Nice views of the sea, nice jacuzzi and not crowded at all the few times we went.

When we used the free cappucino vouchers at the lobby lounge, the kids were given 2 plates of cookies - free!! ( We just couldn't stop smiling at the good service each time.)

When I reached back in Singapore, I received an email asking if I had left behind something they found in our room, and an offer to send it back to us. I am just so impressed =)

Room Tip: Ocean facing definitely!
