“Great Views, Great Location, Poor Service”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 September 2009

The Le Meridien is located along the waterfront in the centre of Kota Kinabalu.

Our deluxe sea view rooms offered a fantastic view of the harbor which really added to our experience of the hotel. The room was also very well appointed with all the amenities you would expect of a five star hotel.

The public areas of the hotel are also very nice, including a well equipped gym and a smallish swimming pool.

The buffet breakfast, that was included in our rate, offered a very wide variety of delicious food. We also had dinner in the restaurant and it was good as well. The service, however, was less than stellar.

Furthermore, the service offered by the reception staff at both check and check out was poor. At check out in bordered on the room. This was a petty because it detracted from an otherwise pleasant stay.

I've stayed at Le Meridien in other countries before and had not been impressed, but booked it nevertheless at KK on the strength of Tripadvisor's recommendations, and it turned out to be a real gem (I booked it inclusive of breakfast directly with the hotel).

Located at the waterfront and near to shopping and local restaurants, you have almost everything at your doorstep. The hotel lobby was huge and impressive, & check-in was smooth and efficient. Despite arriving shabbily & dirty after just climbing Mount Kinabalu, the welcome was very professional and friendly, like you'd receive if you were dressed in a business attire.

My room was luxurious and spacious, faces the sea & comes with the following - 4 complimentary water bottles, dental kit, mouth wash, hair shampoo + conditioner (instead of the usual 2-in-1 shampoo conditioner), complimentary newspaper, fruit basket, DVD player, flat screen TV, hard & soft bed pillows, bathtub & separate shower room, bathrobe, slippers, hairdryer, water boiler, iron + iron board, safety box, torchlight, free internet, etc. Very comprehensive for a typical business/leisure traveller.

What I appreciated best is the spacious walkways and the huge rooms; you don't feel compressed in a building. They look modern and clean.

Service was also exceptional - they send an email asking if I'd need assistance on transport to airport. The conceirge was ever-ready to help you with any of your needs.

I checked out the Rumba bar for some Latin music in the evening. Not too bad, the happy hour is till 9PM. The gym and swimming pool (both facing the sea) was adequate.

It was a beautiful hotel experience, and I'd have no hesitation to recommend Le Meridien KK to anyone.

We had booked a superior room but on arrival mentioned we would be returning after two nights away in the jungle. We were upgraded to a suite which blew out minds away as we normally go for the cheapest room. It was huge with two bathrooms, a dressing room, dining room, lounge and two TVs. The view was over towards the mountains with one window giving sea glimpses.

We didn't expect a similar upgrade on our return but this time had a room with a magnificent floor to ceiling bow window overlooking the harbour, the markets and the swimming pool. Just watching the markets set up each evening through to the huge clean-up every morning was fascinating.

The rooms seemed clean and the food was good in the restaurant. We had an evening buffet meal and great breakfasts. What was exceptional was the service when my iPhone was stolen from my bag while I was shopping. The concierge gave me a number to ring to cancel my phone, then called a taxi for the police station so I could obtain a statement for insurance purposes. They even sent an interpreter along to smooth things over at the police station (no charge). As a result I was able to claim the loss on my insurance and obtain a replacement phone back in Australia.

We stayed in Le Meridien for part of our honeymoon in Kota and we had a dulex room that overlooked the sea. The room was very generous in size with a large bed, flat screen and good views. That had arranged bouqet of red roses for our arrival.
The bathroom has a slight smell to it (water and damp) but overall the bedrooms were clean and tidy. Toiletrees they provided were adequate and smelt lovely.
Hotel staff were warm, friendly and welcoming. The breakfast was a large selection of local and international food (recommend the mushroom pie, omlette and waffles).
It's location is very good, right next to central shopping mall, the waterfront bars (recommend north indian restaurant) and around a 10min walk to Jeselton point (island hopping). From the airport it cost us 30 rngts.

Booked well in advance on Starwood's website a suite described as being on high floor and with seaview. While the suite was huge, the floor was not high, and the view was really disappointing. The windows in the suite are quite small - much much smaller than the regular rooms! So, there was not much of a view. They did offer to move us to higher floor on the second day, but I really didn't want the hassle of moving all the stuff - especially since they told me (is it really true) that all the suites have the tiny windows.

It's obvious this is an old building - the powder room toilet did not flush properly and would run constantly. Despite reporting this, and supposedly having it looked at while we were out, the toilet never did operate properly. Wasting water and running constantly. But since it was in the sitting room as opposed to bedroom the noise was not really a problem.

The lounge was nice with what would be a fantastic view - but they really need to clean (or replace?) the windows.

Staff was good, but this hotel is really old and tired and I don't think I would stay here again - and definitely not in a suite.

I have booked a room for 5 nights in July thru the hotel website. The room was great, clean and huge with the spectacular view on TARP. It is good to ask about room on the highest floor.

The great location in the centre of KK (near restaurants, night market, shopping centers…). Across the road is a handicraft market and there are waterfront restaurants.

The pool is great but during our stay there were not always deck chairs available (a lot of guests).

My fiance and I stayed at Le Meridien Kota Kinabalu for 10 days in August prior to our wedding in Sabah. We had an absolutely fantastic experience at Le Meridien and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.

We booked a deluxe seaview room which was clean, spacious, faultlessly cleaned twice daily and very comfortable. For the last few days of our stay we upgraded to an executive suite, which was lovely and had a lounge/ dining area, but possibly not value for money unless you need the extra room (which we did).

Apart from the rooms, the location of the hotel is as central as you can get, the gym is reasonably well-equipped, pool area is nice and a great place to watch the sun set with a cocktail. We ate at the Circle restaurant a number of times and accessed the buffet breakfast daily and could not fault the food or service.

What made the hotel stand out particularly for us was that the 15 guests we had staying in the hotel for our wedding (which was not held at Le Meridien) had a similarly fantastic experience. Staff were extremely helpful in providing information to our guests at our request - nothing was too much trouble, and the concierge staff in particular were patient and knowledgeable.

Whilst this is probably not the hotel for you if you are interested in a resort style holiday (there's no spa and only one restaurant and small bar), we found it was perfect for our needs (i.e. central location and staff wiling to help us co-ordinate a group of guests).
