“Loved the hotel - great base for exploring KK”
Reviewed 18 July 2010

Le Meridien is an excellent hotel in the perfect location for exploring KK. From the moment you arrive, you are made feel very welcome with friendly staff greeting you. Check in (and check out) was quick and smooth. We stayed 4 nights and had a harbour view room with a lovely vista over the sea and islands. Just gorgeous! The bed was so comfy and not rock hard like everywhere else we’d stayed in Sabah. Good mini bar, TV, air con. in a very spacious room with modern furnishings. Bathroom was large with great shower. The only slight down side is that the walls are a bit thin and we could hear people in the hall and next rooms. Thankfully they weren’t too noisy.
There are malls next door to grab a snack and wonder around. The market is across the road that sells mainly fresh fruit, veg and seafood, with the handicraft centre only a few meters further along. The waterfront restaurant precinct is only 100 metres away offering heaps of choice for dining. We loved the Indian restaurant so much, we went back twice.
We also had dinner in the hotel restaurant one night from the ‘al la carte’ menu which was OK, but too expensive for what you got. We also tried ‘Rumba’, the tex-mex / bar at the rear of the hotel. It looks like a great night spot (but we didn’t stay up that late). The food was very ordinary. We thought we’d start with a snack after a long day snorkeling and ordered some nachos to start. I reckon if a restaurant can’t get nachos right, what will the rest of the food be like? Honestly, it was a plate of cold corn chips with heaps of cheese spread layered over the top with a couple of pieces of tomato… Needless to stay we didn’t order mains and ate elsewhere. Head to the waterfront for much better food.
Breakfast in the hotel is a huge buffet, with so many choices! Probably the best breakfast spread I’ve ever seen (and I travel a lot). Many types of fruit, salads, breads, pastries, including 7 types of fruit juice! Then there was hot food with many types of western, Malay, and Indian style food. You could also have eggs cooked to your liking, or noodles cooked fresh with the ingredients you want. The highlight for me – they had vegemite for my toast (which some Aussies would appreciate after 4 weeks away from home).
We didn’t use the pool but it looked lovely. Everything was superb – particularly the staff. When we return to KK, we’ll be staying at Le Merdien again for sure.

The Meridien in Kota Kinabalu offers an excellent location and very good services. Located right across from the night market and next to two shopping centers we were right in the heart of action in Kota Kinabalu.
The views from the ocean-facing rooms are great - we marveled at the sunsets and the small islands.

Good hotel and clean hotel with the best location in Kota Kinabalu. Be sure to book a room with ocean view and you will get great view of the sunset over the ocean and islands of Tunku Abdul Rahman.

What you pay for is the location, which is right next to the biggest attraction in KK, the night market. Service was great, the rooms ok, and the pool ok. The pool is overlooking the ocean and has a nice bar. Being right next to the market it may get a little smelly at times when the wind blows from over the fish market, but nothing to worry about.

Have just spent 4 nights at Le Meridien KK and thoroughly enjoyed the hotel and KK itself. Rooms very spacious, had all amenities and were very clean. Only criticisim is that occupants of adjoining rooms were very audible, so we just upped the fan on the AC by another notch and that appeared to assist. All staff at the hotel were extremely friendly and helpful.

Location is great with shopping at almost the hotels doorstep, and regular local markets operate directly accross the road - well worth a look for dinner!

Okay a delay in writing this but hopefully just as valid. We stayed here for 4 nights on a bay facing room. The check in team were helpful and checked us in efficiently. We had a really lovely room with a fantastic view and great air conditioning (quiet as well!). The beds were very comfortable and there was plenty of storage space, a desk and superbly comfortable chair and footstool (nice touch!). Our room was cleaned to perfection every day and some fruit we had bought in the fantastic market even had a fruit bowl provided for it without request. The bathroom was slightly small but then we had just come from the Traders Hotel in KL with an enormous bathroom! Again it was spotless and well appointed. Breakfast was good but again didn't live up to what we had just experienced at the Traders Hotel in KL and one or two of the restaurant team were not as efficient as others so it did depend on where you sat! However, I would definitely recommend the hotel and stay there again and the location was brilliant. We were right across from the night markets, close to shops and it was easy to take a taxi to anywhere you needed to be. It had a great pool with helpful staff and there are other gym facilities but we were to busy to use them. We did order room service once when we were there and it was excellent. Kota Kinabalu itself was also fantastic and I can't wait to go back

Le Meridien Kota Kinabalu was the perfect hotel for our holiday in Kota Kinabalu.

Even before you enter the plush lobby area you are greeted by friendly staff. We don't normally stay in places of this calibre, so we felt privileged to be here. This place is classy without being snobby. The standard rooms are very large with all mod cons, large bath, (with a very handy clothes line) and separate shower. The rooms are a/c and very quiet considering the central city location.

Speaking of location, that is a real strong point for this hotel. If you want to live in a little bubble then choose either of the nice shangri-la hotels, but if like us you want to really experience the city on foot you can't go wrong with this one. It is directly opposite the night food market, handicraft market and water front. The water front is particularly good to get a nice meal and have a drink watching the sun set. The hotel is also really close to local convenience shops and shopping malls. You can get a free shuttle bus to the massive 1Borneo mall if that is your thing.

They were doing work on the front of the hotel when we were there, so it doesn't look that nice until you are inside, but I am sure they will improve it. The rooftop swimming pool isn't very large for a hotel of this size, but it was fine for us.

If you have the choice of buffet breakfast it is well worth paying for it. Breakfast is an amazing buffet, with lots of choice - even for veggies. Asian, English, Continental and American food is available. There are chefs there happy to cook eggs or noodles exactly the way you want them. Dinners from the set menu are similarly nice.

What stands out the most is the faultless service and central location. If we ever came back to Kota Kinabalu we would definitely spend some time at Le Meridien.

The staff at Le Meridien bent over backwards to organise our day trips and assist us with our travels. It was worth booking a room with access to Le Royal Club. You could access free WiFi, free afternoon tea, breakfast away from the crowds and access to excellent information. The hotel room was clean and comfortable with a view over the fish market which provided a cultural setting. We enjoyed cocktails each evening for around $7 aud and enjoyed a seafood buffet on Friday. Drinks and food were very reasonably priced. The pool area was lovely and you could order healthy juices and snacks. The gym (which we did not use) had great equipment.

We did day trips but would recommend overnight or longer trips as most things were far away so there was not a lot of time to enjoy them once you got there. Most signs were in English and everyone we met spoke excellent English. If you want to fly to Sandakan, you need to book the flight ahead and this was quite difficult. The tour to Sepilok was booked separately to the flights. We found all tours were cheaper in Kota Kinabalu than in Australia.

We ate at the seafood restaurants where you chose your fish from extensive tanks and they are cooked on the spot. This was a novelty as we have not seen anything like this in Australia.
