We book this hotel last minute and regretted our decision for booking it 2 nights. Rooms are average enough. A/C is centralised and you cannot adjust according to your requirement. Breakfast is just enough.. not much variety. Please avoid rooms on outer side as lots of noise from construction and also on higher floors as lots of noise from wind blowing  You have to pay extra even for extra towel.

Avoid this hotel if possible. Go for hotels on Jalan tun razak..

Room Tip: Avoid rooms on road side

This is an average hotel, but it is well located, the staff were friendly, and most importantly, the room was clean. There was some construction work happening across the street, but did not disturb our sleep.

The hotel needs to be renovated. The decor in the room is dingy and the room is small. We were not able to get WiFi in our room so we had to come down to the lounge by the front lobby to get WiFi. The breakfast items were very limited. The coffee served was cold. I had to ask for hot coffee, which the server took the cup of coffee and microwaved it. Nothing exceptional about this hotel to write about.

Just returned from 8 days at Shangri-La Kota Kinabalu. Probably a bit long to be there but as it was a holiday purely for the kids we decided to stay this length of time. We knew it was high season, but the resort had an incredible amount of people. Had a two bedroom suite (a suite with an interconnecting room). Room was fine, large in size with average decorations, nothing to complain about really, but couldn't tell if the room was newly renovated or not. Housekeeping wasn't up to scratch - hairs in the drawers from previous occupants, smudgy, dingy sinks and toilets that could have used a good scrub, marks on the walls, hoovering wasn't done every day, laundry bags were never replenished once used, and although we all know it happens you never want to see the housekeeping attendant cleaning all the glasses in the room with windex. Turn down service was a bit hit or miss, as well (towels weren't always replenished) but some days were better than others. The main restaurant, Tatu, was an absolute scrum for breakfast. The first morning at 8.30am we were told it was full so had to use their satellite restaurant in another wing. Food at the restaurant was not replenished fast enough and tables weren't cleaned in a timely manner which gave the place a dishevelled feel. We also had access to the Kinabalu lounge which was better but staff were slightly surly. We used the service centre to make a booking at Peppino's, the Italian restaurant, for my daughter's 9th birthday and asked for a small chocolate cake. When we arrived, the reservation had not been made and they scrambled after dinner to get a slice of revolting mango mousse cake together with a candle to celebrate. Our waiter was nice and really tried to please everyone, but not great. The same service centre also failed to book a private car to take us to the Rasa Ria on a day trip. The other restaurants were fine, but nothing to write home about and staff communication with each other was non existent, i.e., no chain of command, no one takes responsibility for dealing with a request, the buck keeps passing. The beach is small and dirty, no one ever came to collect the used towels and dishes that managed to pile up. There was rubbish strewn along the sand (cigarette packets and butts, napkins and bottle caps). The water park was fun for the children, but the tarmac was torn in areas causing a terrible trip hazard. There were areas were the water was flooding under tables and lounge chairs and not draining away (on our last day there was an obvious burst pipe as water spewed out from below a water slide causing more flooding). There could be more staff to monitor the poolside and more umbrellas as it's quite hot and sunny and some guests annoyingly go out early to claim lounge chairs under brollies and are themselves never to be seen again. Again, towels, rubbish and plates and glasses were not regularly collected so you weren't sure if someone was still sitting on a lounge chair or not. One thing we organised that was enjoyable was the two hour boat ride and fishing around the islands. The staff on the boat were lovely and we had a great time. The kids club was fine and staffed by nice, friendly women and Rohan the ladybird was very sweet to our children. Another annoying thing was being asked to top up our credit with the reservation desk and on our second to last day the clerk charged 10,000 RM for incidental charges (not including the room) which amounted to about 3000USD - what in God's name did she think we were going to do on the last night?? There are other things I would write about but can't really be bothered. Overall the service and hotel were average - not sure if it was the combination of under staffing during the high season, but I would have expected slightly more.

It's true that the Hotel Shangri-La is in the centre of Kota Kinabalu when you look on a map. But when you get there you realise that it's best to stay closer to the waterfront and crossing the mult-lane highway in front of the hotel can be a bit of a death-trap. The rooms are clean and the service is friendly. Take the stairs up and down as the lift can be a bit slow.

We are notable businessmen on a business trip to Sabah as invited by the Sabah ministry of tourism. We have early reservation With this hotel. Unfortunately some of my colleagues arrived at hotel with no rooms to avail. my dad was kicked out of his room to join my room to give way to other guests. Worse, we were not treated right by the gay receptionist with tatooed eyebrows. pointing with his finger on my face that i'm at fault where all i want is to ask for a breakfast stub because they only gave one which supposedly to be two. Rooms were clean, breakfast was ordinary with a fly inside the congee.

With this charges, I am impressed with the quiet, clean and complete facility. The only unsatisfactory would be the centralised air conditioning. I do not like to get the smoking odour came out from the centralised air conditioning and hope that the management can do something on it.

Otherwise, I will certainly choose this back if travel with limited budget on accommodation.
