“Expectations Exceeded”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 January 2013

With such a high level of fantastic commendations on TA it is incredible that Lars and Liza can exceed your expectations. From the moment Lars collected us at our Kuching hotel you knew you were in for a a wonderful experience. Our first one of these was visiting the market for provisions. Then onto the boats for the trip to the home stay, where we were met by Liza and their lovely daughter Froya.

Every meal was special and different (please do your cook book soon Liza!). And do the the 'Jungle Shopping' trip with Liza - fantastic fun and loads of it is cooked that day. Lars is a great guide too.

It was a fantastic experience for us both, which is mainly down to the work Liza and Lars put in, the great atmosphere they create and the openness they have with guests. Their story is fantastic and their love of the area and its people infectious. Be prepared for a fantastic time and enjoy.

Thank you for opening your house and your lives to us.

Our family (children 8 and 6 years old) spent 3 wonderful days in a jungle with our hosts Lars, Liza and Fröya. It is difficult to find words for their place; they create something special to feel like it is your home too. There was no problem during our stay. Lars and Liza are trying to find your interests and also everyone’s physical capabilities to adjust activities in the jungle. We did a jungle shopping with Liza and it is a must, especially if you have children, but it was also fun for us adults. She had incredible knowledge about local flora and fauna. Also trekking through the jungle with Lars to the caves was so nice despite all the mud and my decaying shoes. But most we liked dinners with our hosts. We had long talks about everything till late in the evening and the food was just superb. Liza gave a magical touch to everything we ate and it was a best food we ate in whole Malaysia. Some of the ingredients and vegetables we saw for the first time, but it was just great. If you like fancy, sterile places then find some other place, but if you like warm people, nice nature and great food, than this is a place for you.

It's hard to argue with the other TA reviews about Kurakura. There are probably lots of equally beautiful spots in Sarawak and plenty of other great value accommodation. But what makes this place really exceptional is the hospitality of Lars and Liza (and their gorgeous daughter Freya). In case the name isn't enough of a giveaway, it is their home that you are staying in here (and emphatically not a hotel). So Kurakura will suit you really well if what you're looking for is a (very) laid back, family atmosphere. There are no frills and no standing on ceremony: if that's the sort of place you like Kurakura will be right up your street.

Having said that, the quality of the food here - all prepared by Liza from the most local of ingredients - is absolutely stunning. You will get enormous portions of high quality Sarawak cuisine. Ad if you go Jungle Shopping with Liza you'll also get to see her pick the ingredients from the rainforest that she then uses in her cooking. Fascinating and delicious.

We also enjoyed all of the other activities organised by Lars and Liza (their secret picnic spot was a particular favourite with our kids). And they will happily transport you to kayaking, orangutans and other local activities. But if you just want to chill out for a few days and enjoy the sights and the sounds of the Borneo rainforest, it's hard to think that there would be a better spot and with better company.

Lars & Liza are wonderful hosts and make the KuraKura homestay experience very memorable. Liza is a fantastic cook, providing excellent meals with a local flavour. The use of local fruits, vegies and herbs-often collected by Liza and the guests from the jungle- adds to the overall dining experience. Lars is an excellent guide with an intimate knowlwdge of the local fauna and flora. His guided jungle walk is physically challenging but very rewarding and his ability to highlight the animals and plants is amazing. This is even more extraordinary considering he's Norwegian and the setting for KuraKura couldn't be any further from the fjord's. The rooms are basic, as you'd expect for a lodge in the jungle, however all your needs are catered for and the warm friendly atmosphere makes for a very enjoyable stay. We'd recommend KuraKura to anyone wanting to enjoy a "real" jungle experience.

We stayed with Liza and Lars at their beautiful homestay in the jungle. We went jungle shopping with them and learned about the plants and food from the rainforest. The bedrooms were basic but adequate. Take plenty of mosquito repellent and thick socks. Liza is a great cook and we ate well. LIza and Lars are great hosts and we felt relaxed and welcome guests. They journey up river to the homesay was exciting and made me feel like an intrepid explorer. It is half an hour in a small
Boat. The river is safe and you can swim if you want. They have a beautiful daughter who is a joy
To be with. It was a privilege to stay here.

Room Tip: Remember the repellent thick socks and walking shoes

Our stay with Lars, Liza and Froya was truly one of the highlights of our three weeks journey through Malaysia. Besides a magnificent location in the middle of the jungle, only accesible by small boat, we especially enjoyed the company of our hosts, who are the most welcoming and warm people you can think of.
Unforgetable as well: bathing in the river nearby the residence, our jungle treks with experienced guide Liza and last but not least the wonderful family dinners with the most amazing and delicious local dishes..
If luxury, butler's service and hotel buffet meals are what you're looking for: don't go. But if you want to combine nature, a family feeling and basic but clean and sufficient comfort, Kurakura is absolutely the place you must plan in your itinerary when visiting Borneo.
As for us: we really hope to go back one day to see how little Froya, who stole all our harts, has grown.

We are a family with parents and three boys aged 10, 13 and 16. We stayed with Lars and Liza and their charming daughter Frøja for 5 days / 4 nights in July and enjoyed every minute.

Kurakura offers an absolutely unique combination of lodging in the midst of Borneo’s jungle and 5 star gourmet dinning!

The house is very beautiful, with 4 basic but clean and cozy rooms. The shower is a big bucket of rainwater, but the bathroom is lovely and as everything else, spacious and clean.

We had made reservation for 2 rooms, but since we were the only guest Lars offered our oldest a room for himself, so he didn’t have to share with his two younger brothers. That is typical for the service and thoughtfulness of Lars and Liza; they are both extremely pleasant and knowledgeable. As guest we were actually staying in Lars and Lizas home, and they made us fell absolutely welcome and at home.

Lars took us for an awesome trip to some caves nearby – it is nothing like we ever experienced before, a fantastic experience.

The river is safe for bathing, but there are lots of stones and rocks, so wet shoes are needed. Our boys loved playing in the strong current.

Each day Liza would serve the most delicious dishes you can imagine, combining traditional Bidayuh and Malaysian cooking with others cuisines to extremely tasteful and inventing meals.

We all wish to return some day and recommend Kurakura to everybody looking for a combination of nature experience, staying with a lovely family and fabulous food.
