I can't recommend Kurakura homestay highly enough!
From the moment Lars picked us up in Kuching we felt we were with friends. After a 30 minute drive via the vegetable market, and an exquisit 4 km longboat ride into the jungle, you arrive at the woodern home that Lisa and Lars spent two years building on some family land. The family including Lisa's parents still husband the land including their pepper trees and multiple fruit trees, and make daily circuits around the rubber trree to collect the rubber.
Lisa's family are Bidayuk and used to live in a long house before it burnt down, She cooks exquisitly using fresh local and traditional ingredients. We ate with the family including their young nephrew and new baby, and were made to feel like family. We had two nights and in the middle day were taken to Annah Rais and onto their favorite waterfall spot which felt like a shared secret!
Thank you Lars and Lisa (and Jungu aged 6)

A stay at the Kura Kura Homestay with Liza and Lars Larsen in the Sarawak jungle is indeed an extraordinary experience.
The small boat up the river, climbing the narrow steps from the riverbank, the heat, the humidity and the sounds of the jungle brings you into a different world. The excitement of living in the jungle even if it is for a short while is unforgettable, but what really makes this stay extraordinary is the relaxed friendliness you are met with by Liza and Lars:
Lizas welcoming smile on the front porch with their little daughter Froya in her arms, and Lars getting us a cold something to drink sitting down for a chat makes you feel relaxed right away and sets a tone worth a million
- Liza, inviting for a stroll in the jungle around the house, offering a lecture on what you can eat, use as medicine and what to keep away from, while finding ingredients for her next fantastic meal. Growing up in the nearest village she knows the jungle very well, and mixing that with her international experience as a chef, she a true magician with her pots and pans.
- Lars, with smiling 6 year old future jungle-guide Jango, suggesting a cooling-off in the river before dinner. He is our confident and well-informed guide into the thick and seemingly impenetrable jungle. He also knows a lot about where to go on Borneo through his own experience.
- Or, just sitting around on the porch together with our hosts and a couple of others who have been as fortunate as us finding this place, feeling like one big family, listening to the sounds of the jungle, talking about life, or getting hold of some of Lars and Lizas story developing this place.
We wish we could have extended our stay even more than we did. On the other hand; we know we`ll be back! This was definitely not our last stay in the jungle with our new-found friends Lars and Liza at the Kura Kura Homestay.

We read all the reviews and figured some were exaggerations. And then we found Kura Kura Homestay even better than our best hopes.
At the beginning of our 17 day tip in Asia, our 4 days/3 nights with Lars and Lisa (and their infant daughter Froye, and other drop in relatives from the village, and their cats,...) was superb.
I really could not come up with a suggestion for them on what to improve ( and I can usually tell everyone how to do things better:-)
The guided hikes with Lars were relaxing, adventuresome and very educational all at the same time.
Liza's cooking was the best food of our entire trip - and we had some great meals throughout Asia.
As homestay hosts, Lars and Lisa are the quintessential couple. Within a couple hours you ARE part of the family.
I recommend kurakura homestay to everyone. If you love adventure and off the beaten path eco-tourism you will be in heaven. If you have never stayed in anything lower than a 5 star hotel, this is the best way to see how the other half lives - and lives best!

A perfect place to stay in wonderful Sarawak. Set your expectations right and this will be one of your most pleasant experiences in Borneo. Expect great service but no servants. Expect tasty food, but no a la carte (all skillfully prepared by Liza, with ingredients gathered from their garden or the jungle). Don´t expect air condition, luxury appartments and swimming pools. This place does however provide a first class location, realtively cool and refreshing evenings and a lovely, safe and invigorating river to swim in, as well as a good chance to experience a traditional rainforest garden landscape and local wildlife.

Lars and Liza gave us a warm and welcoming stay for the two nights we had with them, and we got the chance to unwind and relax after some days trecking in Gunung Mulu National Park. For those that wants more action when staying there, it is possible to book some kayaking trips with a Kuching based operator. Ask Lars about that and he can help you arrange it. I would also recomend some trecking wit Lars and gathering dinner with Liza in the jungle. The trip upriver to their home is also a great experience in traditional long riverboats.

Highly recommended.

On the way to live the jungle and animals and after the disaster accomodation experience in Bako Park we arrived here and found heaven. The plan was to stay here for 2 nights. We made 4 out of it. Having been in Sarawak for 2 weeks with various different locations we regret that we have not stayed longer. For all who wants to experience the jungle without touristic make ups this is the top adress. You will get the grasp of a normal life in the rain forest with a beautiful family. Don`t expect luxury but be aware that this is luxury what you get here. The best of it is if you visit Lars and Lisa you are not customers you are guests. The very best of it is after 5 days with them you have friends in Borneo.

Following the reviews we decided to stay for 4 days at Kurakura.
I can only say that we enjoyed it tremendously: Lisa being a wonderful cook, Lars a terrific guide, Jango Fred's favourite and the baby so beautiful!

My husband and I spent two wonderful days with Lars and Liza. The homestay is beautiful and Lars and Liza are great hosts. Lars took us on an adventurous trek to some caves. And Liza prepared lovely meals. We will definitely visit them again.
