“Great Place to Stay”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 April 2010

We spent 4 nights at the Basaga in the main house, room very clean, lovely sitting area, all staff very friendly. Brandon picked us up from the airport and was very helpful with suggestions of places to see and we met Mildred on our last day, who had been away for a few days. Any correspondence whilst planning our holiday was promptly replied to by Mildred. We ate there a couple of times and found the prices were very reasonable and quality of food very good.

It is about a 25 minute walk to Kuching town but a taxi is available for about 10 ringgit which is pennies compared to some countries. If you turn left when you come out of the driveway a 10 minute walk will bring you to a modern shopping mall, where they have food outlets etc.

All in all we found Basaga had everything we needed and would definately recommend to friends.

We stayed at Basaga for 5 nights at the end our trip of Borneo with kids aged 4 and 6 yrs. I decided on the Suite room which is the stand alone little cottage style room at the end of the swimming pool (I believe it used to be the school canteen) It was exactly what we were looking for. It was a very large room with king bed plus two single beds large spacious area in the middle and a corner lounge suite with occasional tables - excellent for the kids to spread out their colouring books etc.

We had already stayed out on the Damai Peninsular for three nights and 1 night in the heart of Kuching city but this stay was for a bit of chilling out after three weeks travelling. We therefore went out and about every second day and the in between days mostly hung around the room while the kids enjoyed the pool. I could use my laptop (via hotel wifi) and look straight out to the pool from the litle desk in the room. The bathroom was the only part that let the room down - only a shower and floor always wet and toilet keep running - but that is so typical of bathrooms generally all over it wasn't a big deal.

The food at night was great and to sit back on the daybed type chairs while enjoying a cold beer and some satay sticks and many other nice choices was great. The chef assisted by our request of just a plate of steamed vegetables without chilli or spice, something always sadly lacking when you are trying to give your kids reasonably balanced meals when travelling. Lunch is something they do not cater for at the moment(but they did make up sandwiches for us to take to Bako NP early one morning which was appreciated - -even more so when I saw the food options at Bako!) and breakfast although not great is perfectly adequate, scrambled eggs and sausage with toast. I gave them some milk to store in the fridge while we were there and would bring cereal down for the kids which is easy to pick up at any general store to have first.
If you have very young kids ( who can't swim) I would be a bit careful but for kids around the 4-9 age there is enough space to keep them happy exploring with a pool to enjoy. On the way back to the airport we talked to Brandon about the staff issue and he did say it was a constant area of trouble - getting people with enough skills but what we saw of the staff they were fine, you just to just ask if you didn't have what you needed and they are only to happy to help out. It was only a RM10 cab ride to the waterfront and takes 5 minutes. The only thing I regret not doing was asking if I could look at the other rooms to get a feel for them but I did ask another family staying in an upstairs room overlooking the pool if it was ok and they seemed happy. But my recommendation is to go with the suite room, for space, access and position next to the pool. As it is only a hotel with 34 rooms I don't think there will ever be a problem with a rowdy pool scene - the most I ever saw in there was 6 and that included my kids.

After reading the reviews we decided to stay here although it was not in the centre of Kuching.
There is no shuttle! The first day they pretended that there was one but that is was already gone. But the second day they admitted that there wasn't any.
They even looked at you in a way 'how dare you ask with taxi being zo cheap!'
The same story with the breakfast: today we have only English breakfast: toast and egg and sausage. Next day today we have Continental breakfast: toast and egg and sausage.
The menu card: we had to change our choice of drinks 3 times because it wasn't available and the drink that was available was ready to mix powder smoothie and that in an exotic country. So we decided to go elsewhere for a drink!
The room was nice but the toilet didn't stop flushing. We stayed for 3 nights and it hasn't been repaired!
Free Wifi but very weak in the rooms.
Airport transfer ok
I think there is definitely something wrong with the management!

We stayed at the Basaga Holiday Residences for four nights at the end of February 2010. The booking was for a Main House king room with return airport transfer. The booking was done through the hotel’s website – response was quick. No deposit was required so that certainly simplified matters. We chose this room given the description on the hotel’s website. We were looking forward to our stay. Their website describes the hotel as follows: “Nestled in a secluded, well wooded private property just a mere 7-minute drive away from the City center, Basaga features an exclusive number of 34 well-appointed rooms with full in-room amenities. Some of the rooms overlook the main courtyard and pool area while the rest features private balconies overlooking the grounds.” As well the website stated that there was a regular complimentary shuttle to the downtown waterfront. The Trip Advisor reviews were quite unanimous in their praise of this hotel.

Airport pickup was excellent, with Brandon being our host. Our room was on the second floor of the main house. The balcony turned out to be so narrow, without any furniture so as it was unusable – it also overlooked the parking lot. Our room was large, very clean with an excellent bed. The bathroom though was outside the room, though private. The hotel had carved out some of the old veranda, but did not build the walls all the way up. So the shower, sink and bathroom was open air and very hot. There was no hot water in the bathroom sink (common to all other rooms we think). There was a shared sitting area on another balcony but you could hear the person in the bathroom when sitting there. Needless to say we were quite disappointed. We checked out the other rooms in the old school but they seemed essentially the same. The pool and restaurant areas were nice, but there was limited furniture and no towels.

The hotel seemed poorly organized to us. A few examples: a hair dryer was needed, so I went to the reception and was told that it was broken and they had not yet gotten around to fixing it (no one thought of buying a new one); there was no shuttle to centretown since the driver was unavailable and no idea if it would be reinstated; the restaurant ran out of milk one morning; one evening for dinner the restaurant ran out of menu items and various drinks. When asked the staff shrugged and said “finished”. It should be noted that most of the staff had limited English and perhaps there was some language confusion.

It took us about twenty-five minutes to walk downtown. There are some hawker stalls near the hotel and there is one convenience store. However the hotel is quite isolated, but at least it is quiet. We do not recommend this hotel for many reasons: it does not provide what it advertises on the website; it seems very disorganised; the breakfast is very poor, consisting of poor coffee, fried eggs and two wieners (try the Asian breakfast, it was very good); staff were of limited help; our outdoor bathroom was unacceptable. But the room was very clean and well maintained. This is a two star hotel at best on the outskirt of the city center. Kuching is a lovely city and we would have preferred staying closer to the waterfront.

Poolside room clean, spacious, elegant. Perfect and friendly service, nice position near to city centre. Bar/restaurant is nice too. Prices really competitive. Very warm atmosphere. Staff will help you in every aspect of your trip, including arranging transports.

I just stayed at the Basaga holiday residences on my recent visit to kuching. Being a frequent traveller in the region, I am impressed with Basaga in many ways. Firstly, the colonial villa structures are very cosy and comfortable. The single bedroom I stayed in is at the main building which houses the lobby, and part of the restaurant. The room is simple but clean and pleasant. What I am most impressed with is the friendliness and courtesy of the staff, most of whom are young ladies who tried their very best to meet the needs of the hotel guests. I must mention Brandon Lim who seems to be the guest relations officer, driver, entertainer, tour package coordinator and bellboy all in one. He will go all out of his way to make things happen for the guests. One sore point is the location. I took 30 mins to walk all the way to the waterfront area in both the hot sun as well as in the evening showers. but then again a taxi ride is only 10 ringgit and 5 mins away.
Highly recommended for travellers to kuching.

The Basage-Holiday Residences are located a bit out of Kuching City Center. Distance to City Center is about 25-30 min walk. Apart from this little disadvantage, the Basaga offers a great value with nice and well equipped rooms for reasonable rates. The Hotel is furnished and designed in a very modern and stylish way and offers overthese an athmosphere of a homestay. Besides a pool and a garden facility as well as lots of covered living-room suites the Basage provides a little restaurant/grill and a well-equipped bar. In the evenings many local people visiting the Basaga for a relaxed dinner or some drinks. This places is very quite (even in the evening/night) and good to use as base for activities in the Kuching area. Free internet-access for guests! Not to forget to mention Brandon, the owner, who is a very helpfull guy, trying to make your stay as convinience as possible, always have a open ear for your needs and advices. (You may ask him to have a look into the hotels 'wine cellar' which not only proofes the good taste of the owner - this good taste, also in question of style and service can be found in every regard at the Basaga ). Conclusion: Great value/definitely worth to make a stopover at Basage when in the Kuching area.
