After a string of very successful stays in Pullman hotels in Thailand, China, and Indonesia, the streak was broken at Kuching. First, the hardware. This is the first and only Pullman I have ever stayed in that I would describe as "run down." Someone decided white walls were the way to go but they aren't keeping up with them. They are dirty and scuffed all over the hotel. Most of the hotel is in need of some paint. There are several areas of the hotel that don't look like they are guest areas. Just outside the lifts in the lobby are giant steel doors with big red fire warnings. When I got out of the elevator on the third floor, I honestly thought I got off on the wrong floor. The entrance to the spa looks like a staff area. The walls are plain white, also with industrial doors as well as ugly industrial flooring. It is not a welcome one expects when heading to a spa at a 5-star hotel. The breakfast restaurant seems to be wanting for resources as well. There was a very apparent lack of coffee cups and salt and pepper shakers. Many tables had only saucers and no coffee cups while others had nothing. Salt and pepper was even harder to find. I had to ask other tables to borrow when I needed. Again, not something expected at a 5-star hotel. The very large bathtub felt cold and unwelcoming. Pullman Bangkok had bath salts and a little rubber duck on the edge of tub. Pullman Kuching didn't even have toiletries available. There was only one set in room and they were in the shower.
The software didn't fair much better. Apparently, I had booked some promotional package that included a food and beverage or spa voucher. Unfortunately, no one bothered to tell me until I looked at my reservation on the last night of my stay. As a result, I didn't even have the option to use since I was not given when I arrived. The computer system is a nightmare. I was not given any login information on checkin. When I got to my room and realized a password is needed, I called the front desk and was given an extremely long password. Every other hotel I have stayed in prints a password for you to take with you to your room. Breakfast was a madhouse. No one greets you when you enter, seats you, or provides any other service. I am thankful I am not a coffee or tea drinker because there was no one around to offer or even be asked. Room service messed up my order, and on and on. The service was poor to say the least.
Positives: rooms and bathrooms are huge, gym is nice, pool is large.
I will try again, but I expect better from Pullman and the hotel really needs a bit of investment. Oh, and there were tiny little ants in my room on a very high floor!

Nice, modern, comfortable and clean, we got a good deal through Agoda.com. Love the location: Chinatown at Jalan Pedungan is just a stone's throw away, and Jalan Ewe Hai is on the side of the hotel. At the Pedungan, you can savour good Kolo mee stall, Chinese roast, as well as good Western food like Tom cafe and Bing Coffee. At Ewe Hai, make sure you try Black Bean Coffee, a local gourmet coffee joint and truly an understated gem.

My first stay in Kuching and it was a superb experience staying here

Pros:
1) Spacious and clean room
2) Non-carpet flooring - best for people like me who had allergic nose and carpet flooring causes stuffiness. This is truly a modern hotel who do away with the ancient carpet fashion
3) Genuine friendly service - In KL,Singapore or some UK hotels, customer service tend to be friendly only towards caucasions and look down on Asians regardless of your profession. Skin color is still a problem. But no, in Pullman Kuching, everyone is given the friendly service that makes you felt welcomed.
4) Good breakfast spread - while many 5-stars in Malaysia cut their breakfast budget to a meagre 3star value, Pullman Kuching pulled off a surprise with a menu which I would have seen in KL's 5-star hotels 10 years ago.
5) Nice lounge with cafe and restaurants while awaiting check-ins.
6) Strategic location, within walking distance to nearby attractions
7) Convenience of a mall next to it
8) Cabs awaiting down at the hotel, despite the fixed price, they are generally friendlier than their counterparts in KL or Penang. You can also call for cab for hire which can be slightly cheaper, or sometimes u get a better car/limo for the same price.
9) Attended to our complains promptly and even presented to us a fruit basket and free transfer service to airport as apology. Truly gracious for that
10) Nice bathtub

Cons:
1) Could make do with free WiFi for travelers, although I do applaud the free LAN internet who brought their powerhorses laptops. Younger travelers tend to travel light with tablets and smartphones looking for WiFi connection instead.
2)

The hotel is on a hill overlooking the city and across to the river and mountains. Fantastic views! The rooms are massive. They are modern, very clean and spacious.
The staff are all very friendly and helpful.
There is a choice of restaurants in the hotel. The main one offers a differently themed buffet each evening as well as A La Carte. Breakfast is an extensive and very fresh buffet. The food is all of extremely good quality.
There is a large pool and sunbathing terrace with sunbeds as well as a very modern fitness room with a good choice of exercise equipment.
The hotel also has a relaxing spa offering massages and relaxation treatments.
The Waterfront is only a few minutes walk downhill. Here you'll find plenty of shops (small family run souvenir shops as well as local shops plus a modern shopping mall). From the waterfront you can take a cruise on the river plus there are plenty of seats for just sitting and people watching.
A taxi from the airport only cost MYR26 (about 5 pounds sterling) in Nov 2013 and took about 20 minutes - good value!

If food is important to you besides a comfortable nite stay, then this hotel is THE CHOICE! We love the breakfasts spread and its central location to all the tourists spots nearby. After breakfasts, we just took a short walk to Waterfront area to check out those handicraft items. If you want to try out local food, then there are many cafes and restaurants nearby.

I would definitely want to stay in this hotel again on my next trip,
