“A touch of class”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 October 2011

Tucked in the background of the enormous Borneo Convention Centre is Raintree Restaurant. A touch of class on the outskirts of Kuching city. What a place!

My husband and I arrived around 7pm on a weekday evening. I had been there before impressed with the selection of food and wine, I made sure that our long visit to Kuching would not miss this gastronomical experience.

First of all, it needs to be said, that If you are not willing to spend money, then this is not the place for you. Prices of food is not too high in comparison with hotel standards, but the wine is.

We decided to go in and as a friend in England says "Live it up", meaning making the most out of it. So, pre-dinner, we sat at the lounge chairs, ordered drinks and sat discussing what food we would order. We both wanted a steak, so we planned an appetiser that would compliment our 200g Tenderloin steak.

Having completed our drinks, we were ready to order. My order was Oysters cooked in their shells in cheese and spinach, where my husband had the raw cod and tuna. For our mains we ordered two of the 200g Tenderloin steaks done rare with mashed potatoes, served with steamed vegetables. I had Sarawak black pepper sauce. We washed our meal down with a bottle of red St Emilion.

Before our appetisers arrived, we were spoilt with their in house baked bread and fine butter. The appetisers were displayed beautifully, and tasted just as it looked. The tuna and cod was succulent and fresh. My oysters were cooked just nice.

Our main meal was perfection. The steak rare, just the way we liked it. We were also spoilt with a selection of mustards. Having the appetiser and our steak washed down with a glass of St Emilion was an orgasmic gastronomical experience, I would not forget.

After our main courses, we were asked if we wanted desert. Obviously we wanted to try a desert, but we were both very full, and ordered a Apple Turnover with cinnamon ice-cream to share. Again, you couldn't complain about the perfection of this dish, even if you wanted to. We thought it was a perfect end to a perfect meal, but the restaurant managed to surprise us with a beautiful cup of coffee and chocolates to end it. All I could say was, Wow.

I have been to many restaurants in the UK, Singapore and Malaysia, but I must say, this is one that has been totally amazing. There were only three groups of customers, including ourselves. The music was not over powering. The lighting, just right, and the atmosphere, calm. The service was perfection, and the time it took to be served was just right too. All in all a fantastic experience

Yes, it is expensive. But you must expect to pay a good amount for a really amazing service and fine dining. this sort of thing does not come cheap.

“Professional yet cosy...definitely a nice place to hangout”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 July 2010

Wow, this new place in town is definitely more than what you can expect. The ambience is perfect for a business talk yet also perfect for a chill out with friends and family. Looking out at the glass panes is the Sarawak river, with boats/yachts occasionally cruising by. The food, though a bit pricey, is worth the value. Food is prepared and served to the utmost quality. I must say this is a five-star dining place in Kuching, not something common in the city area. Do check it out, if you have not done so.
