Budget & Comfort Hostel
Reviewed 8 September 2011

We arrived at this hotel & wondered if we had done the right thing! It seemed to be right in the centre of a few local shops in the middle of nowhere. We had to climb a few stairs to the first floor where the reception was very basic. Our room was another couple of flights up & on first impressions it was not so great. We found it to be clean, although very old & in need of a few repairs. There were bars on the windows which overlooked the back of the shops so quite a dirty area. The toilet & shower were in the same very small room but worked just fine. The bedding was basic but comfortable although the airconditioning was not really that efficient. The staff were lovely, the manager introduced herself & offered to change rooms for us but we got comfortable where we were & everything turned out ok. We also got to meet the owner who was a lovely man & everyone was so friendly & kind to us over the 5-6 days there. We actually added a couple of days to our stay once we found how easy it was to get around into the city etc with the great bus service at the door. KFC was 5 minutes walk down the road & a couple of cake shops opposite KFC so once we sorted the food problem, we were fine. We also found a small convenient store a few doors down so that was so cheap for anything you needed. A good place to stay for the budget traveller & many things to see & do in this area. Kuching waterfront is beautiful, Semmingoh is a short bus trip away & a must for anyone who wants to get up close & personal with Orangutans. The Cat Museum is nothing great but super views from the top of the hill. We would definately stay here again.

We arrived late in the evening from the airport and had the impression we ended up in a bad roadside motel that is not only used for sleeping. We were shown a 'deluxe room'. The sheets were dirty so we used our own, and after a kind of shower in a dirty bathroom where the mosquitos could come in, we were hoping for a night sleep and then find another hotel the next day. However we didn't get much sleep because of the staff and other guests? who used the public bathroom and other rooms next or near to ours during the entire night. Eventhough we already paid another night through internet, we were able to get back most of the money for the next night and looked for a hotel in town. There there are much better deals and are in town with all the restaurants and cafes nearby. In town you could spend less (which was not even that little considering you are in Malaysia/Borneo) and find better deals, or.. pay a bit more and go to one of the more luxury hotels.
