We booked the CHINA TOWN INN, Kuching via the AGODA reservation system. The hotel is listed as 2* and was offering a promotional rate of almost 50% off its usual rate. I wrote a review last week but AGODA has yet to include it in its site. I've also complained directly to AGODA and their customer service replied they would escalate the matter to their management. Meanwhile, unknowing Travellers are still booking the so-called hotel, based on the photos and info listed on AGODA's website.
** The same photos are being advertised in the AsiaRooms website.
Firstly, the photos shown for the STANDARD ROOMS are misleading. Those photos are of the FAMILY ROOM. Also, the small lounge area in the Family Room, when unoccupied, is used by the staff for their meals and rest. The night receptionist also sleeps on the sofa inside the room during the day (At night, she sleeps on an easy chair at the reception counter).
We paid a promotional rate of RM44.99 to AGODA for a STANDARD room without windows. You can get the same room for RM40.00 at the "hotel" itself.
The "hotel" is actually located on the 3rd floor of a shoplot. The 2nd floor hosts a printing factory. The staircase leading to the Reception is littered with cigarette butts and the carpet is filthy.
In our cramped, YELLOW-LIGHT lit room, though the bedding was clean, the bedsheet and coverlet (blanket) was stained and full of cigarette burns. Unfortunately, I forgot to take a photo of the stained and burnt sheets and coverlet. Only 2 wafer-thin pillows were provided. We asked for additional pillows but were told no extras were available. No wardrobe space but there was one of those portable single line clothes dryer hanger stand pushed against the wall. There was a small dressing table but with the TV atop the dressing table left no space for our stuff. You're provided with one bar of soap, 2 sachets of shampoo, 1 roll of toilet paper and 2 bottles of mineral water. Towels may be gotten from Reception but you'd better skip using it.
The ensuite bathroom? To reach it, climb 2 steps to reach a narrow one with no lock on the door and no place to hang your towel. The hot water was fine but the shower unit was almost directly upon the SQUAT TOILET! The minute we opened the bathroom door to check it, a cockroach ran past us and we found insects crawling in the sink and toilet bowl. When we checked with Reception, they said all the rooms came with SQUAT TOILETS and no, they didn't have any insect spray.
The only saving grace of the place? The quiet and well-functioning air-con.
It was raining in Kuching when we arrived at our pre-paid accommodation. As I was just recovering from an illness, we didn't want to venture out in the rain to look elsewhere. We left early the next morning after finding much better options just down the road.
