We opted to do the morning cruise. A two hour boat ride around the Kuching wetlands. We arranged the trip through our hotel - The Village Hotel. We got to see four Irrawaddy dolphins, a sea eagle catching a fish and plenty of jelly fish, but no monkeys or crocodiles. The cruise gives you plenty of scenic photo opportunities.

We were initially put off by lukewarm review of of the wetlands park but we had an excellent trip.
We booked through Permai rainforest resort (our hotel in Kuching arranged it). They have smaller less noisy boats than other companies apparently.
We did an evening tour and managed to see Probiscus monkeys, dolphins, fireflies and some crocs. We also went to Bako on day-trip and didn't see any monkeys there besides the ones that hangout by the headquarters.

There are not that many night time activities in the area so I would recommend this if you have time. We combined with a trip the Sarawak cultural village which was quite easy to do.

I know that wildlife tours are sometimes dependant on season, weather and animals' will to "co-operate". In our case (August) a CPH half-day tour was not worth the money we paid. We went for the tour as we failed to arrange an overnight accomodation in Bako National Park. So we decided to look for some other activity.

Actually, the only true highlight was a crocodile laying on a platform. However we were lucky to have a good nature guide so at least he shared bit of his knowledge with us.

There were also some dolphins but you should know that they appear for a second or so and dive back. The proboscis monkeys and macaques were far away from us - nothing special here. We didn't visit a village as the weather was getting worse and it started to rain. Fireflies at the end of the tour - a nice experience if you haven't seen such before.

Having earlier made 2 boat trips on Kinabatangan river in Sabah, we must say this one was quite poor. But as you see in other reviews, this can also be enjoyable one. With nature you never know what's waiting for you.

What you are made to expect of the CPH tour
- See Iriwaddy dolphins (its the highlight)
- See wildlife in mangrove forest
- A visit to local village
- See crocodiles
- See fire flies

What I got out of CPH tour
1. Immediately after payment of 160 RM (per person from Kuching city centre) was told you may get to see any of it or none at all - Common on how can a tour person say even the highlight of the tour is uncertain, and why not say it before payment
2. Once in water you will be explained Iriwaddy dolphins don't come out of water, so max. you can see is some fins and imagine a dolphin :) We were also told that if we want to see dolphins that come out of water there is a separate place a bit deeper in ocean but they do not tour there.
3. Village visit was skipped since they could not find wildlife in mangrove forest and they had to spend more time to find some (i think it was only 5 mins additional)
4. After dark we were shown some eyes (we were told those are crocodile eyes), seemed like seeing a mini torch far way (if it in-fact was crocodile eye) and imagine a rest of crocodile :)
5. If you have ever seen a fire fly in life you have already achieved what this tour by CPH is going to provide you around it
6. When checking wildlife we could see smaller boats much closer to the mangrove forest and folks in it getting a much better view. CPH guys told they will not go near since otherwise the animals will run away - i think they simply could not because of their big boat - and that was a clumsy response given that you are not able to see wildlife from far way
7. Lastly why has lonely planet given this tour especially by CPH as high rating beats me!!!

My recommendation: if you have gone to Bako Park, you do not need to take this trip.
If you just want to see Iriwaddy dolphin find out their mating season months (I do not remember exact months) when you are likely to see them and just focus your tour on them with some decent tour operators.

And avoid CPH tour at all times - expensive, worthless and demand a lot of imagination.

We saw rare Iriwaddy dolphin and also several crocs along the mangrove banks, plus these awesome beautiful blue crabs everywhere. Take a boat tour and you won't be disappointed.
