We started our 2 weeks holiday in Borneo by the "Food,food, food" tour and it was a very good day. James is a very interesting guide, passionated by caving and having a good knowledge about Sarawak. The cooking with the 2 local ladies in their village's home was our favorite moment of the day, even if the visit of the Fairy Cave was great as well.

Delightfully paced day with a knowledgeable tour leader. Two breakfasts in Kuching (Chinese followed by Indian) preceded a trip to a food market inland (Bau). Selected lunch ingredients and met local Bidayuh food and cultural advisor Mary. Taken to family home to watch host Leo prepare lunch. With mouths watering we left Mary, Leo and her family cooking while we visited the impressive Fairy Cave with James.

In his element James gave us a glimpse of what Kuching Caving offer. Donning helmuts we explored the cave system, which while not as impressive as Niah, was made more interesting by James' ability to find wildlife and his geological knowledge

Back to Mary and Leo for a stunning lunch an introduction to a range of turak....a type of rice wine. This was complemented by a pleasant wander in Leo's eclectic garden..seeing rubber peppercorns pineapple and other local crops. Fascinating. Then a short dvd explaining the areas geology and helping make and then eat lovely little deep fried biscuits and fruit
The whole day was a well rounded coverage of many aspects of the culture and geography of Sarawak. Highly recommended.

“Fantastic trip to the people and region of Mongkos, Borneo”

We enjoyed a very interesting trip to Mongkos Village in Sarawak, Borneo. Our guide James is very interested in the culture and the people of this region. Therefore, we had the possibility to visit various families at their private homes in Mongkos. The hike through the rainforest and the Indonesian boarder gave us an imposing impression of the beauty of the region.

“Excellent food-themed cultural day”

With a day to spare in Kuching, and not averse to a spot of recreational gluttony, we took a punt on a leaflet in our hotel offering a gastronomic tour of the Sarawak region. Using the region’s rich and diverse culinary culture as a framework, the day turned out to be a thoroughly rewarding foray off the obvious tourist track, thoughtfully curated by the operators of Kuching Culture (and its sister caving outfit), James and Mary. James, an Englishman with an adventurous enthusiasm and infectious curiosity for Borneo’s political and natural history and his engaging wife Mary, a local Bidayuh with a native knowledge of local produce, cuisine and culture, put together a full day’s itinerary, starting with a traditional breakfast of Laksa at a Kuching eatery, a second breakfast of Indian Roti Canai, a visit to a strangely fascinating birds-nest processing shop on the way to the food market in Bau for Mary’s guided tour of the region’s unusual and colourful fruit, veg, herbs and spices.

Lunch was the highlight of the day, as much for the context as the food. The venue was Mary’s family farmstead in a Bidayuh village and offered a glimpse of authentic (and otherwise hidden) modern-day rural Sarawak life and an interesting counterpoint to the more packaged products offered at the regions Longhouses and ‘cultural experiences’. Mary’s family prepared a delicious meal including chicken with spices cooked in a bamboo tube over an open fire (ayam pansuh), and a truly memorable sweet, savoury and spicy pork dish, washed down with local ‘tuak’ and were more than happy for us to relax, explore and enjoy the setting .

In need of a break from consumption and a little light exercise, the afternoon was spent exploring one of the regions more accessible but still impressive caves - Fairy Cave (although we got the impression that James and Mary would tailor the non-eating elements of the day to suit the client) and finished off with a Chinese meal (and a look behind the scenes) of a recommended eatery on the way back toward Kuching.

In all, a thoroughly enjoyable, informative and rewarding day, providing not only the promised gastronomic treats but also a personal insight into Sarawak, by informed, interesting, and attentive guides. At 300RM a head the tour is perhaps not for all wallets, but for a full (10-11 hour) day, all food and significant mileage included, along with the quality of the service, is excellent value for money. Thoroughly recommended for those with adventurous appetites looking to get beyond and behind the obvious tourist face of Sarawak.
