Riverside Majestic Hotel
Ranked #7 of 55 Hotels in Kuching
Reviewed 9 July 2010

My wife, myself and another couple stayed for 3 nights in July.
We booked in at a strange 3rd floor reception with a not so good breakfast room ( because there were 5000 hashers decending on Kuching & most places were booked out) but when we arrived 4 days later the new reception & restaurant were open -- what a pleasant suprise.
The location is good although the veiws are not as good as The Hilton. The rooms are a bit tired but perfectly clean & everything worked.
The new Cafe Majestic was great. The breakfast buffet had a full range of options & the many local dishes offered on the evening menu were excellent. We did not try the western dishes but the Japanese buffet offered on one evening was superb. The open kitchen is a good idea & is spotless.
The staff, particularly in the Cafe, were very friendly & professional.
The pool looked OK although we did not use it.
We would go back.

Stayed for a night with my young children.
Plus points:- Location is very good & convenient with malls nearby, 24 hr McD and riverside fronting. Staff are friendly.

Minus points:- Room was a bit worn out and small. Hotel facilities are limited, but expected as the hotel probably borders a 3 - 4 star rating.

We had 3 nights at the Riverside majestic and enjoyed our stay there. Excellent corner river view room with lovely views. Spacious room to accommodate our family. vast and varied breakfast choices also. Pool a welcome relief after a day sightseeing. An easy walk along the river and accessible to the major sights. Staff also helped with booking tours to the orangutans with ease.
They are renovating still and have done this in a way not to inconvenience guests.
A good value hotel in a great location.

Stayed for 3 nights in executive club room in April. We got the adjoinging rooms we had requested but agree with the previous reviewer that there was a smell of smoke in the rooms, much stronger in the corridors. It was weird getting to a hotel with no lobby (due to renovations) but staff were helpful as we checked in. Rooms are nice, clean but not very big especially with the extra bed. We found the club lounge very disappointing. There were soft drinks available all day but no ice in the lounge. There was some old looking fruit, some small cakes and a couple of jars of biscuits out for us to snack on during the day. The evening snacks were very disappointing, a little too obviously breakfast revisited eg. chicken sausages rolled in sushi, fried dim sum that had been steamed at breakfast. The food was quite cold and only replaced from downstairs after sometime. At evening cocktails no one offered us anything and we had to interupt a staff member on a computer to ask if we could have a drink.
There was no free Wifi at all for executive rooms, charges RM15 per hour. There was a computer with internet in the lounge but only 30mins free per day per room. On a more positive note staff did not seem to mind when we used more than 30 mins. There seemed to be hardly anyone else using the lounge. The chairs in the lounge are low chairs so it would be hard to eat breakfast. We had breakfast in the main restaurant rather than the lounge. The view was nice but blocked by a huge apartment block built directly in front. Cleaning and transport staff were good but the lounge staff seemed a bit standoffish, like we were intruding as they seemed to be sitting aroung talking to each other most of the time and we had to interupt them to ask anything.
We will not return to this hotel next time. Price was okay but we didn't get the service we had expected by paying for the executive rooms.

Sarawak was hazy during the time of our visit as there were forest fires, but it didn't really explain why our first "non-smoking room" reeked of cigarette smoke. We asked to have the room changed, which the hotel did without too much of a hassle. Been to Sarawak several times before and wanted to try a new hotel - so we gave the Riverside Majestic a try. Staff were friendly if a bit pushy about booking private tours. Location is central. And Sarawak's always brilliant.

When the taxi stopped us at the hotel entrance, we were a bit surprise as they was no lobby there and we have to took lift to "M" level for their reception floor. Later i was informed they were undergoing renovation at lobby and temporary moved the reception to upper levels. It was a weird feeling without the lobby, just like staying in hostels in Hong Kong. After check-in and paid only RM23 to upgrade our room to deluxe with seaview, we went in the room and started to like it. It was spacious, equiped with flat screen TV and have a nice seaview. The toilet was clean and bed was very comfortable. The next morning, we booked the trip to cultural village for RM80/pax with the help of their staffs, very helpful and friendly. The only problem we faced was having to wait for seats during breakfast time as there was full of people during 8-9am. Food was good with lots of varieties, including some local snacks. Location is another plus point as it was very near to waterfront, main bazaar, shopping complexs, topspot seafood, etc. The sister hotel (Magharita hotel) is just opposite and it has better seaview as along the beach.

plus: location, comfortable & modern room, good service
minus: need to pay for internet access, busy breakfast

We stayed for 6 nights. Currently the hotel is undergoing renovation work. This didn't really affect us other than the temporary dining room being a bit cramped. The hotel seems to cater mainly for asian business customers. The western food available for breakfast was not great. Our bedroom was nice and spacious. The problems seemed to be with the staff who, whilst friendly, did not seem to be very customer orientated. For example on arrival we were asked what local newspaper we would like. We asked for the Borneo Post but every day we were given another paper. We did speak to several members of staff to try to correct this but to no avail.
